Chapter 15 - Three Weeks Before BreakfastMalcolm did not deny signing the lake-property consent.

“I signed it.”

Sienna stared at him across the conference table.

“Why?”

“My father said it was an internal reorganization.”

“Into Heritage.”

“Yes.”

“Which you owned.”

“Yes.”

“You knew that then?”

Malcolm’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

“So when you told me you didn’t know who owned Heritage…”

“I lied.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

Sienna’s anger finally broke through the numbness.

“Why should I believe a single thing you say now?”

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer stopped her.

Malcolm continued.

“You should believe documents.”

He placed his phone on the table.

“Emails. Messages. Account records.”

Rebecca sat beside Sienna.

Malcolm slid a written authorization toward her.

“You can obtain my personal bank records relating to Heritage.”

Rebecca looked surprised.

“All of them?”

“All relevant records.”

Sienna crossed her arms.

“And what will they show?”

“That I received money.”

“How much?”

“Eight hundred thousand.”

“We know.”

“That I spent some.”

“We assumed.”

“About three hundred thousand.”

“On what?”

“Debt.”

“What debt?”

Malcolm looked embarrassed.

“Personal investment losses.”

Sienna stared.

“You lost money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Nearly one-point-two million over three years.”

Sienna had no idea.

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you were better at money than I was.”

The honesty was pathetic and painfully human.

Malcolm continued.

“You never made me feel small about it. I made myself feel small.”

“So you hid it.”

“Yes.”

“And Heritage covered it.”

“Yes.”

“Walter knew?”

“He knew.”

“Of course.”

Malcolm nodded.

“He told me accepting the distributions would keep the losses from becoming a problem in our marriage.”

Sienna laughed bitterly.

“And created a bigger one.”

“Yes.”

“Did he use the debt to control you?”

Malcolm looked down.

“Eventually.”

“How?”

“He reminded me what would happen if you discovered the money.”

Sienna’s anger shifted.

Walter had built leverage inside his own son.

Not innocence.

Leverage.

“When you signed the lake transfer three weeks ago, did you know it harmed creditors?”

“I didn’t think about creditors.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I thought it moved a family asset into an entity where I had an interest.”

“So you benefited.”

“Yes.”

“And you signed.”

“Yes.”

Sienna leaned back.

“There it is.”

“I know.”

“No, I don’t think you do.”

She leaned forward.

“You keep waiting for your father’s manipulation to become a defense.”

Malcolm’s eyes lifted.

“It isn’t.”

“Then stop explaining him before you explain yourself.”

He was silent.

Finally he said, “I wanted the money.”

Simple.

Ugly.

True.

Sienna felt tears rise.

Not because she was surprised.

Because he had finally removed every excuse.

“I wanted to feel like I had something that didn’t come from you,” Malcolm continued.

“So you took something that came from me indirectly.”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly at the absurdity.

“I know.”

Sienna wiped one tear away.

“Did you marry me for money?”

“No.”

“Did money make staying easier when things were bad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you let Walter insult Nolan because challenging him might threaten that money?”

Malcolm’s face crumpled.

He did not answer.

Sienna whispered, “Yes.”

He covered his mouth.

“I hate myself.”

“That doesn’t help Nolan.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know.”

She stood.

“Knowing is not the same as changing.”

Sienna walked out.

Malcolm remained alone with Rebecca.

After a long silence, Rebecca asked, “Why did you strike her?”

He stared at the wall.

“I saw my father’s face.”

“What does that mean?”

“He looked shocked.”

“So?”

“My entire childhood…”

Malcolm stopped.

Rebecca waited.

“When he was angry, everyone protected him. My mother. Staff. Me.”

“You learned to restore the room around Walter.”

Malcolm nodded slowly.

“If he was upset, somebody else had caused it.”

Rebecca said nothing.

“I saw Sienna hit him, and I reacted before thinking.”

“You protected the center of the system.”

“Yes.”

“Even from a child.”

Malcolm’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Rebecca closed her notebook.

“You understand why Sienna cannot trust you around Nolan.”

“Yes.”

This time, when he said it, he sounded as though he actually did.

At the mansion, Walter received notice that Hawthorne Residential LLC’s members would vote on removing him as managing member.

He called Sienna immediately.

She answered once.

“You’re trying to steal my house.”

Sienna looked out her apartment window.

“I own forty percent of the entity.”

“My family lived here for decades.”

“Then your family should not have pledged it repeatedly.”

“This is revenge.”

“No.”

“You humiliate me, freeze my company, take my home—”

Sienna interrupted.

“You put your hand on my child because you believed his blood made him less worthy of dignity.”

Walter went silent.

Sienna continued.

“Everything after that is accounting.”

“You think you won?”

“I think you’ve confused possession with ownership for a very long time.”

Walter’s breathing became heavy.

“This house belongs to Grayson blood.”

Sienna looked toward Nolan playing nearby.

“No.”

Her voice turned cold.

“A house belongs to whoever legally owns it.”

She ended the call.

Minutes later, Rebecca sent her an urgent message.

The lender’s forensic review had found something inside the lake-property files.

A handwritten instruction from Walter.

If M hesitates, remind him what we have on S.

Sienna stared at the sentence.

“What do they have on me?”

May you like

Rebecca’s reply came immediately.

We don’t know yet.
