Chapter 10 - The House Was Never Safe

Preston took Zoey out of the house that night.
Not because police said Victor had entered.
There was no evidence of that.
But Preston could not look at the floor plan without imagining every door differently.
They stayed in a secure executive residence owned by the company.
Two security professionals remained outside.
Zoey thought it was an adventure.
“A hotel house?”
“Something like that.”
“Can I sleep in your room?”
“As long as you want.”
She climbed beneath the blanket.
Preston sat beside her until she fell asleep.
Then he went into the living room and finally allowed himself to break.
Not loudly.
He bent forward, elbows against his knees, face in his hands.
Seven years.
Renata had been in his house seven years.
She knew Zoey’s allergies.
School schedule.
Nightmares.
Favorite cereal.
The code to the side gate.
Preston had trusted her more than some relatives.
And Renata had kept a black box full of surveillance beneath his staircase.
Melissa arrived at ten.
“Company security finished a sweep.”
“And?”
“They found two unauthorized audio devices.”
Preston looked up.
“Where?”
“Your home office.”
“Renata?”
“Unknown.”
“One was behind a bookshelf. One in a power strip.”
“How long?”
“Could be months.”
Preston stood.
“I’m selling the house.”
“Don’t make permanent decisions tonight.”
“I don’t care about permanent.”
“Zoey might.”
That stopped him.
Melissa sat.
“We need to talk about the company.”
“I don’t care about the company.”
“You should.”
Preston glared.
She continued calmly.
“Because whoever targeted Zoey did.”
He sat again.
The board postponed the land-sale vote indefinitely.
Redwood Industrial’s bid would be reexamined.
Internal counsel froze any transaction associated with parties linked to Victor Vale.
Graham temporarily resigned from his board seat.
Not from guilt alone.
From necessity.
Preston asked, “Can he be prosecuted?”
“For paying Renata to spy? Possibly, depending on conduct and evidence.”
“And Victor?”
“Law enforcement is looking.”
“And Renata?”
“Charges are being prepared related to the assault on Zoey. Other charges may follow.”
Preston nodded.
“Good.”
Melissa studied him.
“You don’t sound satisfied.”
“I watched the footage.”
“I know.”
“She looked around after pushing Zoey.”
Melissa said nothing.
“She wasn’t panicking because a child fell.”
“No.”
“She was checking whether anyone saw.”
“Yes.”
Preston stared at the dark window.
“That isn’t Graham.”
“What do you mean?”
“Graham is selfish. Cowardly. Resentful.”
“True.”
“But Renata’s face…”
He shook his head.
“She had done something deliberate.”
Melissa asked:
“What do you think Victor told her to do?”
“I don’t know.”
Preston’s phone rang.
Detective Ruiz.
“We found additional deleted messages on Renata’s prepaid phone.”
Preston put her on speaker.
“What do they say?”
“One thread begins two weeks ago.”
Ruiz read:
V: Friday is final.
R: Child is dangerous.
Preston stopped breathing.
Melissa looked at him.
Ruiz continued.
V: Child is leverage.
R: She trusts me.
V: Then use that.
Preston stood.
“What does ‘dangerous’ mean?”
“We don’t know.”
Another message:
R: She heard Graham.
V: What did she hear?
R: Warehouse and ledger.
Preston frowned.
“Zoey heard Graham talking?”
Ruiz continued.
R: She repeats things.
V: Then make sure she stops.
Silence.
Preston felt the room disappear.
“Stops what?”
Ruiz’s voice remained controlled.
“We are investigating.”
“No.”
He gripped the phone.
“What did Victor mean?”
“We do not know whether he meant stop repeating information, intimidate her, or something worse.”
Melissa put a hand on Preston’s arm.
He pulled away, pacing.
“Renata called Zoey dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“Because she heard something.”
“Apparently.”
“What?”
“Warehouse and ledger.”
Preston searched his memory.
Had Graham been at the house recently?
Yes.
Three weeks earlier.
A disastrous dinner.
Graham had arrived uninvited.
They argued in Preston’s office about the company vote.
Zoey had been upstairs.
Or Preston thought she had.
Ruiz asked, “Can Zoey describe what she overheard?”
“Not tonight.”
“Agreed.”
“Use Dr. Keller.”
“We will.”
The next morning, Naomi spoke with Zoey gently.
No leading questions.
No pressure.
Eventually, Zoey remembered.
“Uncle Graham was yelling.”
“What did you hear?”
“He said Grandpa hid something.”
“What?”
“A book.”
“Did he say where?”
Zoey thought.
“In the old place with the big H.”
Preston understood instantly.
The original Hale warehouse.
Closed for six years.
Still owned by the company.
“What else?”
Zoey squeezed her stuffed rabbit.
“Uncle Graham said if Daddy finds Grandpa’s red book, everybody will know.”
Preston’s skin chilled.
Warren’s ledger.
The original.
Not the copies Renata had.
The red book.
May you like
His father had hidden it in the old warehouse.
And six-year-old Zoey had accidentally heard the one secret Victor desperately needed buried.
