“APOLOGIZE TO MY WIFE” / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - The Son Who Chose SilenceEvelyn called Blake that evening.

Not because Harrison wanted her to.

He didn’t.

Not because Blake asked.

He hadn’t.

Because Evelyn needed an answer.

Blake answered immediately.

“Mom.”

She heard traffic.

“Where are you?”

“Hotel.”

“What happened?”

“Sloane and I are taking space.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Part of her wanted to say:

Come home.

She didn’t.

“What happened between you two is yours.”

Blake was quiet.

“Mom…”

“I’m calling about us.”

He exhaled.

“Okay.”

Evelyn sat in the sunroom.

The place where Blake had once told her not to make the wedding about herself.

“I want to ask you one question.”

“Anything.”

“Do you think I deserved what happened?”

Silence.

Evelyn waited.

Blake said:

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“Then why couldn’t you say that before?”

“I was angry.”

“At me?”

“At everything.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He sighed.

“Sloane had been telling me for months that you didn’t respect her.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Sometimes.”

“When did I disrespect her?”

“You questioned everything.”

“Like what?”

“The trust. Money. Wedding.”

“I barely asked about the wedding after she told me to back off.”

Blake said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“Did I tell you not to marry her?”

“No.”

“Did I threaten to withhold money if you married her?”

“No.”

“Did I insult her family?”

“No.”

“Did I exclude her from holidays?”

“No.”

“Then what did I do?”

Blake’s voice became frustrated.

“You made her feel judged.”

“How?”

“I don’t know!”

Silence.

Evelyn’s heart hurt.

“Blake.”

He breathed heavily.

“I always felt like you were waiting for me to make the wrong decision.”

“I’m your mother.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“Then explain.”

He did.

For the first time.

He told her how every trust question made him feel twelve.

How Harrison’s success made his own career feel borrowed.

How Evelyn’s caution felt like doubt.

How Sloane was the first person who consistently told him he deserved control.

Evelyn listened.

Then said:

“I’m sorry.”

Blake went silent.

“What?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t understand how the trusts made you feel.”

His voice softened.

“Thank you.”

“But.”

He tensed.

“I’m not sorry for asking questions before handing you millions.”

Blake exhaled.

“Mom.”

“No.”

Her voice remained gentle.

“You wanted an apology. I gave you the part that belongs to me.”

Silence.

“The rest belongs to you.”

Blake said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“You lied about why you wanted my signature.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Sloane’s father wanted money.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I would question the investment.”

“Yes.”

“And instead of asking me honestly, you tried to make me feel guilty for controlling you.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s throat tightened.

“And at the wedding?”

Blake whispered:

“I failed you.”

The words hit harder than any excuse.

Evelyn cried silently.

Blake continued.

“I saw Sloane stop you.”

“I know.”

His breath caught.

“What?”

“Your father saw the video.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Evelyn almost regretted saying it.

Then Blake whispered:

“There’s video?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“All of it.”

The change in his breathing was immediate.

Evelyn heard panic.

“Who has it?”

“Your father. The venue.”

“Anyone else?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mom.”

His tone sharpened.

“You can’t let that get out.”

Evelyn froze.

The moment lasted only a second.

But it told her everything.

His first fear was not:

Dad saw me hurt you.

It was:

Who else might see?

Evelyn’s sadness turned cold.

“Why?”

“Because people will misunderstand.”

“What will they misunderstand?”

“It looks terrible.”

“It was terrible.”

“Mom.”

“If the video shows exactly what happened, what part worries you?”

Blake went quiet.

“That it could hurt Sloane.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

Not cruelly.

In disbelief.

“She slapped me.”

“I know.”

“You pushed me.”

“I know.”

“And you’re afraid people will think badly of you.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Maybe not.”

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“But it’s true.”

Blake’s voice broke.

“I could lose everything.”

“What?”

“My position. Board confidence. Clients.”

Evelyn stared.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“You’re still talking about yourself.”

Silence.

She took a breath.

“Blake, I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“I believe that.”

He began crying quietly.

Evelyn continued.

“But I cannot keep loving you in a way that protects you from seeing who you were that night.”

“Mom…”

“You want the video hidden because consequences scare you.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Blake went silent.

“For once, let them.”

She ended the call.

Across town, Blake sat alone in a hotel room.

For ten minutes he stared at his phone.

Then he called Harrison.

His father answered.

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

“Delete the video.”

Harrison didn’t respond.

“Please.”

“Why?”

“You know why.”

“No.”

Blake stood.

“This could destroy me.”

Harrison’s voice remained quiet.

“Which part?”

“What?”

“Your actions or people seeing them?”

Blake closed his eyes.

“Dad.”

“Whose reputation are you asking me to protect?”

Silence.

“Yours?”

Harrison continued.

“Sloane’s?”

Blake gripped the phone.

“Or the woman both of you left against a wall?”

Blake whispered:

“Mom told me.”

“Good.”

“Are you going to release it?”

“No.”

Relief flooded Blake.

Then Harrison said:

“But I’m not destroying it.”

Blake’s relief vanished.

“Why?”

“Because truth should not disappear merely because it embarrasses you.”

The call ended.

Blake sat on the edge of the bed.

May you like

For the first time in his life, his parents were not rushing to save him from the consequences of his own choices.

And he had no idea who he was without that protection.
