Chapter 19 - Sentencing DayRyan was sentenced to twenty-two months in federal prison.

The judge gave him credit for restitution and cooperation.

She also rejected probation.

“You did not act from desperation,” she said. “You acted from entitlement to control assets that were not yours.”

Ryan stood still.

“You convinced yourself you could restore the funds later. That belief does not erase the choice to risk someone else's future without permission.”

He glanced toward his wife.

Then Nora.

The judge continued.

“The beneficiary was your own daughter. That makes the breach more personal, not less serious.”

Twenty-two months.

Ryan had prepared himself for the number.

Hearing it still felt like falling.

He was permitted to self-surrender six weeks later.

Outside, Nora hugged him.

Their mother did not.

Not because she hated him.

Because she wasn't ready.

“I'll bring the twins tomorrow,” she said.

Ryan nodded.

When Ellie heard the sentence, she became furious.

“Twenty-two months is almost two years!”

Her mother nodded.

“He may serve less depending on applicable rules, but yes, it's a long time.”

“They got the money back!”

“Most of it.”

“Then why?”

“Because returning something after taking it doesn't mean nothing happened.”

Ellie knew that.

She hated it anyway.

Hudson cried.

“I don't want Dad to miss our birthday.”

Their mother froze.

The twins' eighth birthday would occur while Ryan was incarcerated.

Ryan realized it too.

He sat alone in his apartment staring at the calendar.

The birthday.

The day he most wanted to redo.

The court had taken away his chance.

No.

He corrected himself.

The court had not taken it.

His choices had.

The next day he met the twins.

Hudson ran into his arms.

Ellie walked more slowly.

Ryan crouched.

“Can I hug you?”

She nodded.

Then she held on longer than he expected.

“I'm mad,” she whispered.

“At me?”

“At everybody.”

“Fair.”

“I don't want you to go.”

“I don't want to either.”

“Can you run away?”

Ryan almost laughed.

“That would make things significantly worse.”

Ellie pulled back.

“Are prisons scary?”

“Probably sometimes.”

“Will you be okay?”

“I think so.”

“Don't lie.”

Ryan smiled sadly.

“I don't know exactly what it will be like. But I will do what I'm supposed to do.”

Hudson asked:

“What about our birthday?”

Ryan's eyes filled.

“I won't be here.”

Hudson cried again.

Ellie looked at her father.

For a moment Ryan expected her to say it was his punishment.

Instead she whispered:

“That sucks.”

Ryan laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

They discussed letters.

Phone calls.

Visits.

Ryan promised nothing he couldn't control.

Before leaving, he handed their mother a sealed envelope.

“What is this?”

“Birthday instructions.”

She stiffened.

“Ryan.”

“Not presents.”

“What then?”

“Just read it when the day comes.”

She stared.

“If this is some elaborate surprise designed to—”

“It isn't.”

He smiled faintly.

“I think I've learned that lesson.”

She took it.

Ryan surrendered six weeks later.

No cameras waited.

Nora drove him.

At the entrance, he looked terrified.

“You okay?” she asked.

“No.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“You and my wife have developed a cruel relationship with that word.”

Nora hugged him.

“Come back better.”

Ryan looked toward the facility.

“I'll try.”

Inside, his belongings were processed.

His expensive watch went into storage.

His phone disappeared.

His name became attached to an identification number.

For the first time in his adult life, Ryan controlled almost nothing.

That night, lying in a narrow bed, he thought of the mansion.

The company.

Westbridge.

Then the birthday living room.

Ellie waiting.

He finally understood why that memory hurt more than losing millions.

Money could be restored.

Property could be sold.

A company could appoint another CEO.

But a seven-year-old girl's expression when she realizes her father chose her brother over her—

May you like

that could never be refunded.

All Ryan could do was make sure she never had to wonder again whether he understood what he had done.
