Chapter 1 - The Cloth Over the Camera

“Stand still!”

Mrs. Hart’s voice cut through the preschool classroom.

Logan Bennett was already crying.

The five-year-old stood against the wall beneath a row of colorful alphabet cards, his shoulders curled inward and his small hands pressed tightly against his stomach.

Around him, more than twenty children sat quietly at child-sized tables.

Nobody spoke.

A large American flag hung beside the classroom board.

High in one corner, the security camera was completely covered by a square gray cloth.

Mrs. Hart never looked at it.

She was watching Logan.

Her brows were lowered.

Her jaw was tight.

A wooden classroom ruler rested in her hand.

“You can’t even follow one simple instruction?”

She brought the ruler down against the back of Logan’s pants.

Logan flinched.

His eyes squeezed shut for a fraction of a second.

Then opened again, wide and wet.

“Please…”

Mrs. Hart stepped closer.

“Crying isn’t going to save you.”

Another strike.

Logan’s lower lip trembled harder.

He did not fall.

He did not scream.

He simply seemed to become smaller.

Across the room, Noah Kim watched.

He was five too.

His eyes moved from Logan—

to Mrs. Hart—

to the cloth over the camera.

He had seen that cloth before.

Mrs. Hart always put it there before what she called “reset time.”

Noah did not know what reset meant.

He only knew children cried more when the camera could not see.

Mrs. Hart raised the ruler again.

Logan whispered:

“My mom…”

Mrs. Hart’s expression hardened.

“What?”

“My mom can see me.”

For the first time, something almost like amusement touched Mrs. Hart’s face.

“No, she can’t.”

Logan stared toward the covered camera.

Mrs. Hart leaned close.

“Your mother isn’t watching everything.”

The ruler came down a third time.

Logan flinched.

Fresh tears ran down his cheeks.

“Please…”

Noah looked toward Mrs. Hart.

She was still completely focused on Logan.

He slowly slid from his chair.

Nobody moved with him.

No child shouted.

No one pointed.

Noah stepped between the little tables.

One careful step.

Then another.

His heart pounded so hard he could feel it in his throat.

Mrs. Hart said:

“You will stand there until you learn to listen.”

Noah reached the wall beneath the camera.

The cloth hung just low enough.

He stretched.

Missed.

Stretched again.

His fingers caught one corner.

He pulled.

The cloth slipped.

For one terrifying second, Noah thought it would hang halfway.

Then it fell completely.

The camera lens was exposed.

Noah backed away immediately.

Mrs. Hart did not turn.

Three miles away, Claire Bennett sat in a corporate conference room.

At thirty-eight, she was the chief operating officer of Northstar Health Technologies.

Six executives sat around the table discussing quarterly projections.

Claire’s laptop was open.

Her phone buzzed with a reminder from Stonebridge Early Learning Academy’s parent portal.

She almost ignored it.

Then casually clicked the camera feed.

The image appeared.

Cooler colors.

Fixed angle.

Slight digital compression.

Claire frowned.

Logan was against the wall.

Crying.

Mrs. Hart stood beside him.

Holding something.

Claire leaned closer.

“What…”

The executives around her continued talking.

Claire heard none of them.

She recognized the ruler.

Saw Logan’s face.

Saw his red eyes.

His trembling mouth.

Her body went cold.

Then Mrs. Hart lifted the ruler slightly.

Claire shot to her feet.

Her chair rolled backward.

“STOP!”

Everyone in the conference room turned.

Claire leaned toward the laptop.

“GET AWAY FROM MY SON!”

Back inside the classroom, Claire’s voice blasted through the camera speaker.

Mrs. Hart jolted.

The ruler froze.

Her eyes widened.

Her lips parted.

For a moment she simply looked around.

Then slowly—

very slowly—

she raised her eyes.

The camera.

No cloth.

The lens staring directly at her.

Color drained from her face.

Confusion became realization.

Realization became panic.

Mrs. Hart lowered the ruler.

“Logan…”

Claire grabbed her phone.

She dialed Stonebridge.

The director answered.

“Stonebridge Early Learning, Monica speaking.”

Claire’s voice turned cold.

“This is Claire Bennett.”

“Mrs. Bennett—”

“Get to Logan’s classroom.”

A pause.

“Right now.”

“What happened?”

Claire stared at the live feed.

Mrs. Hart was backing away from Logan.

“You tell me.”

“What?”

“Because I just watched your teacher strike my five-year-old son while your security camera was intentionally covered.”

Silence.

Then Monica Vale said something Claire did not expect.

“Claire…”

Her voice suddenly sounded afraid.

“Don’t call anyone else until I get there.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“Why?”

Another pause.

May you like

Then Monica whispered:

“Because there are things about that camera you don’t understand.”
