Chapter 10 - Nora Bell Was Still FightingThe clinic smelled like dust and antiseptic.

Empty waiting room.

Old examination rooms.

Locked offices.

No Nora.

Dana felt disappointment before reminding herself that empty could still speak.

Forensics found recent food containers.

Clothing.

Medication packaging.

Multiple people had been there within days.

One room contained a cot.

Beside it:

A paperback novel.

Dana opened the cover.

Nora Bell.

Her handwriting.

A piece of tape marked the page.

Inside, Nora had circled words in different paragraphs.

Dana read them in order.

DON’T TRUST THE DOCTOR

Luis stared.

“She left a message.”

Dana turned pages.

More circles.

TRAVIS WANTS OUT

Then:

COYOTE HAS COPIES

Nora had been communicating with whoever eventually found her belongings.

Again.

Evidence inside ordinary objects.

She had learned from her father.

Dana felt an unexpected rush of admiration.

“She never stopped working the problem.”

Luis smiled faintly.

“Sounds familiar.”

Dana ignored him.

Another room contained shredded paper.

Forensics reconstructed enough of one page.

A patient intake form under a false name.

Photograph attached.

Nora.

Another:

Alicia.

Tessa.

Howard.

Jamie.

All assigned new names.

Dana felt sick.

Coyote’s role became clearer.

Create plausible paper trails suggesting victims voluntarily relocated.

Medical visits under new names.

Employment forms.

Temporary addresses.

Enough to muddy searches.

Not perfect new identities.

Just confusion.

Delay.

That was what Silas stole.

Time.

Eli had repeated the phrase.

We’re stealing time.

Cars made money.

Identities made money.

But false records made missing adults look less missing.

A fabricated trail suggested somebody had left by choice.

Then investigators found Nora’s latest file.

New name:

Rachel Lane

Destination:

Douglas

Dana searched.

No full address.

Then another note:

Transport 08/21 — TC

Two days ago.

Travis Cole.

He had moved Nora again.

“Why keep moving her?” Luis asked.

Dana looked at the Vale file.

“Because Silas still wants the originals.”

“But he’s arrested.”

“Travis may not know what Silas has told us.”

“Or he’s acting on his own.”

Dana nodded.

Coyote himself was gone.

So was Travis.

Then a phone rang inside a desk.

Everyone froze.

An old landline.

Dana looked at Luis.

He signaled for recording through established procedure.

Dana answered.

“Yates Occupational.”

Silence.

Then a man:

“You’re not Conrad.”

“No.”

“Who is this?”

“Who are you calling?”

Click.

Disconnected.

Forensics traced what they could.

Public phone near Douglas.

Dana’s pulse accelerated.

Nora’s listed destination.

“Move.”

Coordination began.

Then the clinic security system produced another surprise.

Archived audio from two nights earlier.

Travis arguing with Conrad Yates.

Travis:

“This is over.”

Conrad:

“It’s over when Vale says.”

“Vale got arrested.”

“Then it’s over when I say.”

Dana listened.

Travis sounded desperate.

“I’m taking her back.”

“Back where?”

“To her sister.”

Dana stopped.

Travis wanted to release Nora.

Maybe.

Conrad laughed.

“You think one good act erases ten years?”

Travis:

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I’m done.”

Conrad:

“You were done six years ago. Then you needed money.”

Silence.

“Then you needed help making evidence disappear.”

Travis:

“Shut up.”

Conrad:

“Then you helped Vale build this.”

Dana felt cold.

Travis had not merely drifted in after losing his badge.

He helped design the system.

Then:

“She knows too much.”

Travis:

“That’s your problem.”

Conrad:

“It becomes yours when she talks.”

Travis:

“She already left evidence everywhere. Keeping her is making it worse.”

Dana almost smiled.

Nora had made herself dangerous to hold.

Then the recording ended with a crash.

No clarity.

No gunshot.

No definitive violence.

Just argument.

The next camera footage showed Travis leaving alone.

Conrad remained inside for another three hours.

Then left.

Nora never appeared on camera.

A rear exit had no working camera.

Could Travis have taken her?

Likely.

Then Douglas police found a vehicle tied to Travis near a motel.

Empty.

Inside:

Blood?

No.

Dana exhaled.

A woman’s shoe.

Nora’s size.

And a receipt from a diner forty miles east.

Timestamp that morning.

Dana called the diner.

A waitress remembered a man matching Travis.

And a woman.

“Did she look like she was there willingly?”

The waitress hesitated.

“She looked tired.”

“Afraid?”

“Maybe.”

“Did she speak?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked where the restroom was.”

“Anything else?”

The waitress thought.

“She asked me if we had a pen.”

Dana’s heart accelerated.

“Did you give her one?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“Wrote on the receipt.”

“Do you still have it?”

The waitress searched.

Then read:

CALL DANA MERCER. TRAVIS SAYS HE’S LETTING ME GO. DON’T TRUST HIM YET.

Dana closed her eyes.

Nora was alive that morning.

Alive.

Thinking clearly.

And Travis was claiming he would release her.

“What direction did they go?”

“East.”

Toward New Mexico again.

Dana immediately coordinated.

Then the waitress said:

“Wait.”

“What?”

“The woman gave me something.”

Dana froze.

“What?”

“A key.”

“What kind?”

“Small brass key.”

“And she said?”

The waitress repeated Nora’s words.

If he changes his mind, this is why.

Dana stared.

A key.

To what?

Something Travis wanted.

Something Nora possessed.

Then Luis whispered:

“The originals.”

Dana understood.

Nora had not merely hidden the Vale file years ago.

She had taken something from the network during captivity.

Maybe records.

Maybe evidence.

Enough that Travis could not simply let her walk away without risking himself.

Nora knew he might change his mind.

So she gave the key to a stranger.

Another breadcrumb.

Another refusal to disappear quietly.

Dana looked toward the highway map.

“Wherever Travis is taking her, she’s making sure we can follow.”

May you like

And for the first time, Dana stopped thinking of Nora only as someone who needed to be rescued.

Nora Bell was actively fighting her way home.
