Chapter 1 - The Freezer Door Opened on More Than One SecretRachel Miller heard her daughter scream from beneath the restaurant.

“Mommy! Please!”

The sound stopped her halfway across the kitchen.

A server nearly collided with her.

“What was that?”

Rachel didn’t answer.

She was already running.

Another scream rose from the basement.

Weaker this time.

“Mommy!”

“Ava!”

Rachel flew through the service door and down the narrow staircase.

Her hand struck the railing.

She nearly fell on the final step.

The basement corridor was warmer than the kitchen upstairs, crowded with shelves of dry goods, boxes of napkins, restaurant supplies, and stainless-steel equipment.

At the far end stood the industrial walk-in freezer.

The heavy metal door was closed.

Rachel heard pounding from inside.

Tiny fists.

Weakening.

“Ava!”

She grabbed the handle.

Locked.

“No.”

Rachel yanked again.

“AVA!”

“M-Mommy…”

Rachel looked wildly around.

Then she saw Margaret standing six feet away.

Perfect silver hair.

Navy sweater.

Arms folded.

Watching.

“Open it.”

Margaret didn’t move.

Rachel stared at her mother-in-law.

“OPEN IT!”

“She needs another minute.”

For a second, Rachel genuinely could not understand the sentence.

“What?”

“She spilled an entire pot of soup.”

Rachel looked down.

A stainless-steel pot lay on its side near the prep table.

Cream-colored soup had spread across the floor.

“You locked her in there because she spilled soup?”

“She was told not to touch it.”

Rachel rushed toward Margaret.

“Give me the key.”

“Rachel—”

“NOW!”

Something in Rachel’s face finally moved her.

Margaret reached into her pocket.

Rachel snatched the key, unlocked the handle, and pulled.

The heavy freezer door burst open.

White freezing mist rolled outward.

Rachel stopped breathing.

Ava was curled against the bottom shelf.

Her pale-pink sweater was dusted with frost.

White crystals clung to her long brown hair.

Her eyebrows were nearly white.

Frost covered her cheeks and shoulders.

Her entire body shook so violently that her knees knocked together.

Her jaw trembled.

Her teeth chattered uncontrollably.

“M-Mommy…”

Rachel ran inside.

“Oh my God.”

She dropped to her knees and pulled Ava into her arms.

The child’s skin was terrifyingly cold.

“Baby, look at me.”

Ava tried.

Her lips shook too hard.

“G-Grandma… locked me…”

“I’ve got you.”

Rachel carried her out.

An employee named Luis had appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

His face went white.

“Call 911.”

Margaret sighed.

“That is completely unnecessary.”

Rachel turned.

Slowly.

“What did you say?”

“She was inside for a few minutes.”

Ava buried her face against Rachel.

“She was screaming.”

Margaret pointed toward the spilled soup.

“She ruined forty portions.”

Rachel stared at her.

Margaret didn’t look ashamed.

She looked irritated.

“She needed to learn consequences.”

Rachel felt something inside her tear.

“You locked a seven-year-old child inside an industrial freezer.”

“You spoil that girl.”

“She could have died.”

“Oh, please.”

Luis stepped closer.

“Mrs. Miller, she’s covered in frost.”

Margaret glared at him.

“Stay out of family business.”

Rachel handed Ava carefully to Luis.

“Wrap her in something warm. Not hot. Paramedics are coming.”

Ava grabbed Rachel’s wrist.

“Mommy…”

“I’m right here.”

“Don’t leave.”

“I’m not leaving.”

Rachel looked at Margaret.

Then stepped toward her.

“You ever put your hands on my daughter again—”

Margaret laughed.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Turn everything into a crisis.”

Rachel stared.

Margaret leaned closer.

Her voice became quieter.

Crueler.

“Maybe you’re so defensive because you know the truth.”

“What truth?”

Margaret’s mouth curled.

“That she isn’t even Ethan’s biological child.”

Rachel went completely still.

Luis looked away.

Ava was shivering too violently to react.

Margaret saw the blow land and continued.

“You think I don’t know?”

Rachel’s face changed.

Margaret barely had time to notice.

SLAP.

Rachel’s palm struck Margaret’s cheek.

The sound cracked through the basement.

Margaret stumbled half a step.

Her hand flew to her face.

“You…”

Rachel’s chest rose and fell.

“You locked my daughter in there.”

“You hit me!”

“You could have killed her.”

Footsteps thundered down the basement stairs.

“What the hell is going on?!”

Ethan.

Everyone turned.

Rachel’s husband stood on the staircase in a light shirt and dark jacket.

He looked from Rachel to his mother.

Margaret immediately changed.

Her face collapsed.

Tears appeared.

“Ethan!”

She rushed toward him.

“Your wife attacked me!”

Ethan stared at the red mark on Margaret’s cheek.

Then at Rachel.

“Rachel?”

“Look at Ava.”

That was all she said.

Ethan turned.

His face changed.

His daughter sat wrapped in Luis’s jacket.

Frost still covered her hair.

Her teeth chattered.

Her entire body shook.

“Ava?”

He moved toward her.

Margaret grabbed his sleeve.

“She’s fine.”

Ethan slowly looked at his mother.

“Why is my daughter covered in ice?”

Margaret opened her mouth.

Ava spoke first.

“Daddy…”

Ethan knelt.

“What happened?”

“Grandma locked me in.”

Silence.

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

Margaret’s tears stopped for half a second.

Then returned.

“It was an accident.”

Ava shook her head.

“No.”

Her teeth clicked together.

“Grandma said Mommy would never find out.”

Margaret’s face changed.

Not much.

But Rachel saw it.

Ethan did too.

“Find out what?” Ethan asked.

Ava stared at Margaret.

Then whispered:

“What happened to the other little girl.”

Everything in Margaret’s face disappeared.

The tears.

The anger.

The indignation.

Pure panic remained.

Ethan slowly stood.

“What other little girl?”

Margaret said nothing.

Ava lifted one trembling hand.

May you like

And pointed inside the open freezer.

“There’s her name on the wall.”
