Chapter 17 - Emily Refused to Follow Michael’s ScriptEvery part of Emily wanted to go.

That was exactly why she didn’t.

Michael wanted her emotional.

Angry.

Separated from Daniel.

Obsessed with the idea that Charles Whitmore killed her father.

He wanted her on a plane to Massachusetts while she was recovering from childbirth.

He wanted control.

Emily looked at the photograph of Robert Hayes’s grave.

Then deleted it.

Daniel stared.

“You sure?”

“No.”

She held Grace.

“But I’m done letting men create emergencies and decide I have to run toward them.”

Detective Monroe nodded.

Federal authorities in Massachusetts handled the cemetery.

Michael was gone before they arrived.

He left an envelope beneath the flowers.

Inside:

A recording of Robert Hayes.

Emily listened at the hospital.

Her father’s voice.

Younger.

Tired.

“Charles, I will not help you hide this.”

Charles replied:

“You don’t understand what exposure does.”

“I understand exactly.”

“You’ll destroy thousands of jobs.”

“No.”

“You did that when you paid bribes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Her father sounded exactly as she remembered.

Calm.

Stubborn.

Charles threatened litigation.

Robert laughed.

“Rich men always think consequences are blackmail when they finally reach them.”

Emily cried.

Then another voice appeared on the tape.

Michael.

Young.

“Dad, let him go.”

Charles ordered him out.

Michael refused.

“I copied everything.”

That was the moment Michael became part of the scandal.

Robert said:

“Michael, don’t become your father.”

The recording ended.

Emily sat silently.

Michael had built his entire adult identity around that night.

He saw Charles as corrupt.

Correctly.

He saw Robert as courageous.

Also correctly.

But he turned Robert’s courage into justification for his own crimes.

He convinced himself revenge inherited morality from the person being avenged.

Emily whispered:

“My father would hate him.”

Daniel nodded.

“He’d hate all of this.”

Margaret stood near the door.

“He would hate me.”

Emily looked at her.

“Yes.”

Margaret accepted it.

A week passed.

Grace remained in neonatal observation but improved rapidly.

Emily could finally walk comfortably.

Daniel slept in chairs.

Noah remained under temporary guardianship arranged through the court.

Karen Whitmore offered to care for him.

Noah refused.

“I barely know her.”

Fair.

Daniel offered.

Noah looked suspicious.

“You have a baby.”

“Yes.”

“You want another kid?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“No.”

Noah appreciated the honesty.

“But you need somewhere safe.”

After legal discussions, Noah temporarily stayed with Daniel and Emily under supervision.

The arrangement was strange.

Grace’s possible biological brother.

Daniel’s nephew.

Michael’s son.

A twelve-year-old who liked cereal at midnight and refused to unpack his backpack.

Emily watched Daniel interact with him.

No pressure.

No father replacement.

Just presence.

Maybe that was how family could begin after blood stopped being a weapon.

Margaret remained under investigation.

She voluntarily surrendered her passport.

Her attorney hated it.

Margaret said:

“I’m done running from what I did.”

Emily didn’t forgive her.

She did allow Margaret to see Grace once through the nursery glass.

No touching.

No holding.

Margaret cried.

Then walked away without asking for more.

Progress measured in restraint.

Michael disappeared.

Then three days later, Adrian Cross was attacked in jail.

Nonfatal.

Another inmate claimed no reason.

Police suspected Michael arranged it.

Adrian requested protective custody.

Before transfer he told investigators:

“Michael has a second plan.”

“What?”

“He created another embryo.”

Emily’s blood turned cold when Monroe told her.

“What?”

Adrian claimed Michael had stored additional embryos from the unauthorized procedure.

At least one.

Possibly more.

Emily felt physically ill.

“Where?”

Adrian didn’t know.

Michael had moved the biological material after the clinic operation.

Daniel whispered:

“He could do this again.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

Not if they found him.

The investigation turned urgent.

Genetic material tied to Emily existed somewhere outside her control.

Michael could use it for another pregnancy through illegal means.

Another child.

Another leverage point.

Another life turned into a weapon.

Then Noah quietly spoke from the doorway.

“He has a freezer.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?” Emily asked.

Noah shrugged.

“At the desert place?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Dad called it the nursery.”

Emily’s skin crawled.

Noah continued.

“He said it was where he kept our future.”

Daniel knelt.

“Do you know where?”

Noah thought.

Then nodded.

“Boston.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Adrian’s old house.

The storage facility police already searched.

Apparently they hadn’t found everything.

May you like

Noah whispered:

“There’s a room under the garage.”
