Chapter 4 - The SafeRobert Sterling loved safes.

Not ordinary ones.
Hidden ones.
Wall panels.
Floor compartments.
A steel drawer concealed behind the wine cellar’s temperature controls.
Daniel spent his childhood believing rich people naturally hid documents everywhere.
After Robert died, Margaret removed most of them.
At least that was what Daniel thought.
Jonathan led Daniel into Robert’s old study.
Rachel stayed upstairs with Sophie.
The room smelled of leather and dust.
Jonathan pointed behind the portrait of Daniel’s grandfather.
An open steel compartment.
“You knew about this?”
Jonathan nodded.
“For years.”
“Why didn’t I?”
“Dad showed me.”
Daniel stared.
“Why you?”
Jonathan shrugged.
“I was fourteen.”
Daniel had been twenty-two and already working inside Sterling Holdings.
Their father trusted the younger son with a hidden safe?
Something about that bothered Daniel.
“What was inside?”
“Old legal records.”
“What kind?”
“Mostly family.”
“Paternity?”
Jonathan looked uncomfortable.
“Dad had testing done.”
“On who?”
“I only saw the folder last week.”
“Jonathan.”
His brother exhaled.
“You.”
Daniel went still.
“Why would Dad test my paternity?”
Jonathan looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel almost laughed.
Of course.
One more uncertainty.
“Mom knows?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She caught me looking.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Daniel stared.
Before the party.
Margaret knew Jonathan found the file.
The timeline tightened.
“What did the folder say?”
“I didn’t read the full report.”
“You found a secret paternity file and didn’t read it?”
“I heard Mom.”
Jonathan’s voice sharpened.
“She came into the hallway. I put everything back.”
“What did you see?”
“A laboratory letter.”
“And?”
“Dad wasn’t listed as the comparison parent.”
Daniel’s blood cooled.
“Who was?”
“Charles Mercer.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
Rachel’s grandfather.
“No.”
Jonathan continued.
“Charles’s name was on the report.”
“As what?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel walked away.
The room tilted.
If Charles had been tested against Daniel—
possible relationships multiplied.
Father.
Grandfather.
Uncle.
No conclusion yet.
Jonathan touched his shoulder.
“Daniel.”
“Don’t.”
He turned.
“What else have you known?”
Jonathan flinched.
“What?”
“You’ve been watching Mom all night like you’re waiting for something.”
His brother sat.
“I found letters too.”
“From Dad?”
“To Charles.”
Daniel waited.
Jonathan looked toward the open safe.
“Dad wanted to remove Margaret from the family trust.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“He thought she was moving money.”
“What money?”
“Private trust assets.”
“How much?”
“Maybe twenty million.”
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“And nobody told me?”
“You were twenty-eight and taking over the company.”
“That would seem like exactly when I should know.”
Jonathan looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know then.”
“When did you find the letters?”
“Last month.”
“Why were you digging through Dad’s safe?”
Jonathan’s eyes shifted.
Another secret.
“Mom asked me.”
Daniel stopped.
“She asked you to search it?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“A blue envelope.”
“What was inside?”
“She didn’t say.”
“Did you find it?”
“No.”
Daniel stared.
His mother sent Jonathan into the safe.
Jonathan accidentally found the paternity file.
Margaret discovered it.
Then Charles appeared at tonight’s party.
They planned to force Daniel to sign something before his fortieth birthday.
This was no sudden crisis.
It had been building.
“Did Mom tell you what she wanted me to sign?”
“No.”
“Do you believe that?”
Jonathan looked hurt.
“Yes.”
Daniel softened slightly.
Then:
“Did you know she planned to humiliate Sophie?”
“No.”
“If you did—”
“I didn’t.”
Daniel believed him.
For now.
His phone rang.
Rachel.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Sophie’s asking for you.”
“I’m coming.”
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“And there’s someone downstairs asking to see me.”
“Who?”
“She says she’s Charles Mercer’s daughter.”
Daniel stopped.
“Your mother is dead.”
“I know.”
“What’s her name?”
“Laura Mercer.”
Rachel’s face wasn’t visible through the phone, but her voice shook.
“She says she’s my aunt.”
Daniel and Jonathan ran downstairs.
Laura Mercer waited inside the foyer.
Late fifties.
Short dark hair.
Black coat.
She looked nothing like Rachel.
Until she smiled nervously.
Same slight asymmetry around the mouth.
Family.
Rachel stood several feet away.
Sophie had fallen asleep in Evelyn’s arms upstairs.
Daniel approached.
“You’re Charles’s daughter?”
Laura nodded.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Try again.”
“I haven’t seen my father in three years.”
Daniel laughed.
“He was here tonight.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
Evelyn showed her the video.
Laura stared.
Then sat suddenly.
“Oh my God.”
Daniel watched.
Her shock looked real.
“Why did everyone think he was dead?”
Laura closed her eyes.
“Because he wanted us to.”
“Why?”
“He said Margaret would destroy him.”
Rachel whispered:
“Margaret?”
Laura looked at her.
“You’re Rebecca’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
Laura began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“My father.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“What did he do?”
Laura looked at Daniel.
“Charles spent thirty years covering up something your mother did.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What?”
Laura shook her head.
“Not here.”
He almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that in my house.”
She looked toward the portrait of Robert Sterling.
Then said:
“Your father had an affair with Rebecca.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Daniel felt sick.
“But he wasn’t Rachel’s father.”
They both looked at Laura.
“What?”
Laura continued.
“Robert loved Rebecca.”
“Then who—”
“Charles.”
Rachel stepped back.
“My grandfather?”
Laura’s face broke.
“No.”
Daniel’s pulse exploded.
Laura whispered:
“Charles Mercer was not your grandfather.”
Rachel stared.
“He was your father.”
The room went silent.
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
“Rebecca was not Charles’s daughter.”
“What?”
Laura continued.
“She was his client.”
Rachel’s entire childhood rearranged in real time.
“My mother told me—”
“Because Charles made her.”
Laura looked sick.
“He told everyone Rebecca was his daughter to explain why he kept intervening in her life.”
Daniel’s mind raced.
“So Rachel and I are not related through Dad.”
“Not through Robert.”
Relief came too quickly.
Then Laura looked at Daniel.
“But that paternity file matters.”
“Why?”
She swallowed.
“Because Charles also had an affair with Margaret.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
And suddenly the test comparing Charles to Daniel had an obvious reason.
One Daniel did not want to hear.
May you like
Laura whispered:
“Your father Robert may not have been your biological father.”
