Chapter 14 - Everett’s Death Was ReopenedThe exhumation was the worst day of Genevieve’s life since Adrian’s funeral.

She didn't attend.

Neither did Callum.

Laurel did.

“I needed to.”

Nobody questioned her.

Results took time.

While they waited, federal agents interrogated Malcolm Voss.

He denied everything.

Orchard House?

Ancient allegations.

Timothy?

Tragic accident.

Financial network?

Legitimate investment structures.

Adrian?

Never met privately.

Harrison?

Former consultant.

Sebastian?

Confused young man obsessed with family mythology.

Malcolm had spent forty years surviving accusations.

He knew how to speak.

Then investigators played the original Orchard recording.

For the first time, Malcolm’s expression changed.

Timothy’s voice:

“You're stealing from us.”

Malcolm:

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

Timothy:

“I saw the papers.”

A struggle.

“Get off me.”

Then Malcolm:

“You should've kept your mouth shut.”

Crash.

Silence.

Malcolm leaned back.

“Audio proves nothing.”

Maybe not alone.

But combined with financial records?

More.

Then Adrian’s emails.

Then Harrison’s messages.

The case tightened.

Harrison broke first.

He requested a deal.

Genevieve felt no satisfaction.

He had known Rowan since infancy.

Sent birthday gifts.

Organized family Christmases.

Helped carry Adrian’s coffin.

Now he sat in a federal interview room and admitted Malcolm recruited him twenty-four years earlier.

“Why?”

“Money.”

Simple.

Almost insulting.

Harrison initially copied financial documents.

Then opened accounts.

Then moved funds.

Then helped Malcolm pressure Everett.

“Did you cause Adrian’s crash?”

Harrison looked down.

“I arranged access.”

Genevieve’s hands shook behind the observation glass.

“To the plane?”

“Yes.”

“Did you sabotage it?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“A mechanic.”

“Name?”

Harrison provided it.

The mechanic had died three years earlier.

Payment records existed.

“Did Malcolm order it?”

“Yes.”

Harrison admitted telling the mechanic to damage the fuel-control system in a way likely to fail under load.

He didn't know Adrian switched aircraft until Callum’s request reached Sebastian and then Harrison.

So he changed target.

Genevieve closed her eyes.

Her husband had been murdered.

Not an accident.

Six years of grief rewrote itself instantly.

Then investigators asked:

“Everett Ashford?”

Harrison went silent.

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Did Malcolm?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Harrison stared at the table.

“No one.”

Genevieve felt confusion.

“What?”

Harrison continued.

“Everett died naturally.”

“How do you know?”

“Because we planned to kill him the next week.”

Silence.

The cruelty of it stunned everyone.

Harrison had ordered the veterinary medication.

But never used it.

They intended to poison Everett during a business retreat.

Before they could—

Everett had a genuine heart attack.

Genevieve almost laughed.

After all the conspiracy—

her father really had died naturally.

But Malcolm and Harrison saw opportunity.

They let everyone believe Everett’s investigations died with him.

They stole papers.

Suppressed the alternate will.

Continued accounts.

Then Sebastian kept digging.

“So who suppressed Dad’s second will?” Callum asked.

Harrison looked toward Malcolm’s attorney.

“Malcolm.”

“How?”

“Rachel had copies.”

Rachel shook her head.

“He never contacted me.”

Harrison continued.

“He didn't need to.”

A clerk in the probate office was paid to misfile supporting documents.

But the first will remained valid enough to proceed.

Not elegant.

Just corruption.

Genevieve looked at Rachel.

She wasn't guilty of that.

One burden removed.

Then Harrison explained the current-day plan.

When Rowan’s dormant laundering account unexpectedly triggered an automated compliance review, Malcolm panicked.

He believed Genevieve might discover everything.

Everett’s contingency apparently also activated around the same time.

The recorder was delivered to Maribel's car by someone Harrison couldn't identify.

Harrison saw it.

Recognized it.

Improvised.

He drugged Maribel.

Scattered Callum’s pills.

Tried to create a family scandal big enough to make the recorder disappear inside confusion.

“Why use Rowan?”

Harrison looked ashamed.

“He was there.”

Genevieve felt pure hatred.

“My son was convenient?”

“Yes.”

Same logic.

Children used because adults assumed they were powerless.

Then Detective Morgan asked:

“Who delivered the recorder?”

Harrison shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Did Malcolm?”

“No.”

“Sebastian?”

“No.”

“Mateo?”

“No.”

Then who had followed Everett’s instructions for four years?

Rachel reviewed the contingency documents again.

One line:

If Orchard-linked activity appears in Rowan’s identity, contact V.C.

Vivian Cole.

The forensic accountant.

Alive.

She had never disappeared entirely.

Everett had hidden her.

And if the recorder had returned—

Vivian might finally be ready to come back too.
