Chapter 14 - THE VOICEMAIL MICHAEL HEARDThe recording continued.

“She may claim she is my mother.”

A pause.

“She is emotionally unstable. Keep her away from the guests until I can deal with her.”

Margaret’s face emptied.

Sophia’s voice sounded impatient in the recording.

“And please make sure no photographer captures her. I will not have that dress attached to my wedding.”

The message ended.

No one spoke.

The hotel manager lowered the tablet.

Sophia looked at her mother.

“I didn’t mean unstable in a medical sense.”

Margaret stood.

Her movements were slow.

“I asked why I had been stopped by security.”

The manager checked his records.

A guard had intercepted Margaret near the ballroom entrance.

She showed him the printed wedding announcement and her identification.

The guard called the coordinator.

Before the coordinator could contact Sophia, another guest recognized Margaret and escorted her inside.

That was why she entered looking frightened.

She had already been told she might not be welcome.

Still, she came.

Still, she carried the silver hairpin.

Still, she planned to watch silently from whatever seat she was given.

“You told strangers I was unstable,” Margaret said.

Sophia began crying.

“I didn’t know what else to say.”

“You could have said I was your mother.”

“You don’t understand the pressure.”

“No,” Margaret said. “I understand it very well.”

She straightened the old cardigan.

“I spent twenty years afraid you would be embarrassed by me.”

Sophia shook her head.

“I was a child.”

“You are not a child today.”

The sentence was quiet.

Final.

Margaret lifted the cloth handbag.

“I am leaving.”

Sophia blocked her path.

“You can’t walk away after destroying everything.”

Margaret looked at her daughter.

“I did not cancel your wedding.”

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You showed Michael exactly what you wanted him to see.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted him to see that you had a mother.”

Sophia stepped backward.

For a moment, she looked like the frightened girl Margaret remembered.

Then the moment disappeared.

“You always ruin good things.”

Margaret did not defend herself.

She walked around Sophia.

I followed her toward the door.

Sophia called my name.

I stopped but did not turn.

“If you leave with her, we are finished.”

I looked back.

“We were finished when you believed treating her that way was safer than telling me the truth.”

She touched the diamonds at her ears.

“What am I supposed to do now?”

“Tell the truth when no one is forcing you.”

Then I left the suite beside her mother.

Behind us, Sophia began screaming at the wedding coordinator.

May you like

The doors closed.

Her voice disappeared.
