Chapter 7 - The Phone Behind the ShoesThat night, Ethan searched Emily’s dressing room while she was putting Sophie to bed.

He hated the act itself.

The crouched, suspicious movement.

The opening of drawers and boxes and velvet trays.

This was not the man he liked being.

But the man he had been until yesterday had nearly signed away his company and his daughter while his best friend stood in his wardrobe.

So Ethan kept searching.

Designer shoes lined one wall like a boutique display. Silk scarves. Jewelry cases. Organized luxury.

Then he noticed a space at the back of the bottom shelf where several shoe boxes had been pushed too close together.

He pulled them forward.

There it was.

A slim second phone.

Powered off.

Hidden behind a pair of ivory heels.

He stared at it for a long time before touching it.

When he did, his hand felt almost detached from the rest of him.

The phone turned on without a password. Emily had apparently assumed secrecy of location was enough.

It wasn’t.

The messages began loading.

At first he saw only the obvious.

Lucas: He suspects nothing.

Emily: Then stop texting me.

Lucas: You say that every time.

Then more.

The obvious turned into the unbearable.

Photos.

Suggestive jokes.

Hotel confirmations from afternoons Ethan thought were charity lunches or spa appointments.

Messages about him.

About Sophie.

About timelines.

Ethan sat down on the bench at the foot of the wardrobe because suddenly standing felt complicated.

He scrolled.

Lucas: He’ll sign tomorrow if you keep him soft tonight.

Emily: Don’t talk about my husband like that.

Lucas: Then stop acting like he’s yours when he hasn’t looked at you in months.

Emily: That’s not fair.

Lucas: Fair is what comes after signatures.

Ethan kept reading.

Emily resisted sometimes.

Not enough.

Not in the ways that mattered.

She complained about his long hours, about feeling invisible, about Lucas pushing too fast.

Lucas never slowed.

He steered.

He flattered.

He sharpened her resentment until it looked like clarity.

Then Ethan found the message chain from two nights earlier.

Lucas: Board package updated.

Emily: Does Ava see it?

Lucas: Not if Ethan signs in the house.

Emily: I hate this part.

Lucas: You like the future part.

Emily: I like Sophie safe.

Lucas: Then we don’t let him read the medical clause.

Ethan’s chest tightened.

The medical clause.

He scrolled further.

Emily: I said no to that.

Lucas: You said no, then you stopped stopping me.

Emily: That’s not the same.

Lucas: In court it is.

Court.

His fingers clenched around the phone.

Then:

Emily: He’s coming home early. Sophie is with him.

Lucas: Hide me.

Emily: Get upstairs now.

Lucas: Are you serious?

Emily: MOVE.

The final texts from yesterday.

The path straight into the wardrobe.

Straight into catastrophe.

Ethan looked up as Emily entered the dressing room doorway.

She saw the phone in his hand and went white.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then she shut the door quietly behind her.

“I was going to tell you.”

He almost smiled at the absurdity. “When?”

She had no answer.

He held the phone up slightly. “The medical clause.”

Emily looked down.

“What is it?”

She swallowed.

“Lucas knew you’d never sign just a custody draft. So he had a psychiatrist he knew through one of his investors prepare language saying your recent insomnia and work stress could create emotional instability concerns during merger pressure.”

Ethan stared at her.

“He was going to fake a mental health risk?”

“Not fake entirely.” The words slipped out and she regretted them instantly. “I mean—”

“Careful.”

Tears filled her eyes. “You haven’t been sleeping, Ethan.”

“So your lover was going to use my exhaustion from building our life as evidence I was unfit to run my company and parent my daughter.”

“I didn’t let him file anything.”

“No. You let him draft it and bring it into my house.”

Emily took two steps forward. “I know what I did.”

“Do you?”

Her face crumpled. “I know enough to hate myself.”

He stared at her, second phone heavy in his hand.

“Then here’s something else to hate,” he said.

He opened another thread and turned the screen toward her.

A voice memo file.

Label: If he won’t bend.

Emily’s hand flew to her mouth.

“I never heard that.”

Ethan pressed play.

Lucas’s voice filled the dressing room.

Smooth. amused. cold.

“If Ethan won’t sign voluntarily, we let the affair surface after the board review, position him as volatile, and push emergency governance. Emily keeps Sophie. I keep the company. He keeps enough money to avoid being dangerous.”

The recording ended.

Emily looked as if she might collapse.

Ethan stopped it before the next file.

There were more.

He could see that already.

Plans.

Backups.

Scenarios.

The room was suddenly too small for all the ways he had been betrayed.

Emily whispered, “He recorded himself?”

“He believed he was untouchable.”

Then Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

“And maybe he thought you were too compromised to ever come back to me.”

Emily cried silently now.

The kind that emptied rather than pleaded.

Ethan set the phone on the bench between them.

“I need the whole truth.”

She nodded.

He waited.

May you like

Then she said the one thing he had not expected to hear that night.

“I think Lucas is in debt.”
