Chapter 7 - The Mother Who ReturnedLenora Hail arrived at Blackthorn House before sunrise.

No one knew how she passed through the outer security perimeter.

One moment the cameras showed an empty road. The next, she stood at the front gate wearing a dark green coat and carrying a small suitcase.

Garrett had not seen his mother in eighteen months.

Lenora had vanished immediately after Augustus’s funeral, leaving behind a short message claiming grief had made life inside the Hail family unbearable.

Garrett now suspected another reason.

She entered the library and looked at Mave.

“I am glad you survived.”

Mave remained close to Posie.

“Did you know where we were?”

“For the first year.”

Garrett closed the library door.

“Why did my father write your name before he died?”

Lenora removed her gloves.

“Because I ended his reign.”

The room became still.

She explained that Augustus had suffered a medical emergency during an argument. His medication lay only a few feet away.

Lenora chose not to retrieve it.

She did not touch him.

She did not call for help until it was too late.

“I watched a cruel man discover that power could not command his own body,” she said quietly.

Garrett felt no grief for his father.

But he felt the weight of the confession.

“Why?”

“Because I learned what he had done to Mave.”

Lenora looked toward Posie.

“Augustus planned to take the baby after she was born. He believed Garrett’s child belonged to the family before it belonged to its mother.”

Mave held Posie more tightly.

“You helped me escape?”

“No. Elias did. I discovered the plan later.”

“Then why didn’t you find me?”

“I tried. Elias had hidden you too well.”

Garrett showed her the recording from Blackthorn House.

Lenora listened to Augustus, Elias, and Coraline discussing the disappearance.

When it ended, her expression remained composed.

“Elias was never protecting Mave,” she said. “He was protecting his future claim.”

She revealed another secret.

Elias was not merely Garrett’s uncle.

He was Augustus’s half-brother, born outside the Hail marriage and excluded from the main inheritance. Augustus had used him for difficult work but never treated him as an equal.

“Elias believed controlling the next heir would finally give him the empire Augustus denied him,” Lenora said.

“Why hide the letters here?” Garrett asked.

“To make certain they would eventually be found.”

“By whom?”

“By Mave.”

Lenora believed Elias had always planned to return Mave and Posie when the timing benefited him. Garrett’s wedding created the perfect crisis. The Hail-Ashford alliance would collapse, the board would lose confidence in Garrett, and Elias could present himself as the only stable leader.

“He guided Mave toward Fifth Avenue,” Garrett said.

“Yes.”

Mave remembered the job interview that brought her to the city center.

The company had contacted her unexpectedly.

Wesley investigated the business.

It did not exist.

Elias had arranged everything.

Even the rain-soaked encounter had been part of his plan.

“Why reveal Posie?” Mave asked. “He could have kept her hidden.”

“Because he needs the board to recognize her before he can become her guardian,” Lenora answered.

Garrett understood.

Elias wanted Garrett removed—not Posie.

Once Garrett was declared unfit, missing, or dead, Elias would petition the board to manage the trust on Posie’s behalf.

Mave looked at Garrett.

“He will come for you next.”

“He already has.”

Wesley entered with urgent information.

Elias had called a gathering of the extended Hail family at the old Hudson estate. He claimed Garrett’s actions had endangered the organization and requested a formal vote to remove him.

The meeting would occur that evening.

“It is a trap,” Lenora said.

“Every room Elias enters is a trap.”

Garrett prepared to attend.

Mave blocked the library door.

“You cannot walk into a house filled with people who want your power.”

“If I don’t appear, they will vote without me.”

“Let them.”

“They can use that vote to challenge your custody of Posie.”

Mave’s face changed.

Garrett approached her.

“I will not allow them to turn you into an unfit mother simply because you lived in hiding.”

“Then take us far away.”

“That was my father’s solution to everything he could not control.”

“This is different.”

“It becomes the same if fear makes every decision for us.”

Mave stared at him.

“And what happens if you don’t return?”

Garrett had no reassuring lie.

He looked at Posie.

The child stood near the staircase, listening.

Garrett crouched in front of her.

“I need to go to a meeting.”

“With the bad wolves?”

“Yes.”

“Are you coming back?”

Garrett took her small hand.

“I will do everything I can.”

Posie shook her head.

“That’s not what daddies say.”

“What do daddies say?”

She thought carefully.

“They say promise.”

Garrett had spent his life avoiding promises because promises created weaknesses enemies could exploit.

Now his daughter was asking for one.

“I promise I will come back.”

Posie placed her hand against his gray wolf ring.

“Then take a good wolf.”

Garrett removed the ring and handed it to her.

“You keep this one safe for me.”

At the Hudson estate, more than forty members of the Hail family gathered inside the central hall.

Elias stood beneath a portrait of Augustus.

“You have weakened us,” he told Garrett. “You exposed family secrets, destroyed alliances, and placed our future in the hands of a woman who abandoned you.”

“Mave was forced to leave.”

“So she claims.”

“She has evidence.”

“Evidence created by the Ashfords.”

Garrett looked around the room.

“They want you to believe Posie is the problem. She is not. The problem is that this family has spent generations mistaking fear for loyalty.”

Several relatives lowered their eyes.

Elias called for the vote.

Before the directors could respond, every screen in the hall activated.

Coraline appeared through a live video connection.

Behind her stood Victor Ashford.

“My family confirms that Elias Hail financed the threats against Mave Whitlock and arranged the attempted kidnapping of Posie Hail,” Coraline announced.

Elias’s expression finally cracked.

Garrett looked at him.

“It’s over.”

Elias smiled.

“No.”

The estate alarms began sounding.

Then the outer gates exploded open.

Not from an attack outside.

From charges planted within the property.

Elias stepped backward toward a hidden passage.

“You still believe this meeting was about a vote.”

He pressed a remote control.

Across the city, Blackthorn House lost all communication.

Garrett’s blood turned cold.

May you like

Elias had never intended to capture him at the Hudson estate.

He had only wanted Garrett far away from Mave and Posie.
