CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7
The Last Recording

Margaret survived.

The bullet damaged her liver but missed the major arteries. She entered surgery at the same hospital where Richard had been treated only a day earlier.

Victor Hale and Samuel Levin were arrested.

The story reached the press before sunrise.

By noon, cameras surrounded the Brooks mansion. Reporters spoke of kidnapping, fraud, corporate espionage, and a family empire built on secrets.

Daniel ignored them.

He drove to the house where he and Emily had lived during their marriage.

He had not entered it since her funeral.

The property remained in his name, but he kept it locked and untouched. Dust covered the furniture. Emily’s books still lined the shelves. A blue scarf hung beside the front door.

For a moment, Daniel expected her to walk down the hallway and ask why he had been gone so long.

Natalie entered behind him.

“Margaret said the file was here.”

“She also said Richard knew Emily would die.”

“You believe her?”

“I believe she believed it.”

They searched Emily’s office.

The desk contained old case notes, photographs, and records of Brooks Foundation transactions. Most had already appeared on the USB.

Daniel noticed a framed wedding photograph turned slightly away from the wall.

Behind it was a small safe.

The key from the greenhouse box opened it.

Inside was a digital recorder and a letter addressed to Daniel.

He opened the letter first.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed to finish what I started.

Your father is not the man you think he is.

He has lied to you, controlled you, and decided what truths you were allowed to survive.

But he is also the reason you are alive.

Daniel stopped.

Natalie read over his shoulder.

Emily continued.

Richard learned that Victor planned to kill me. He gave me a choice: disappear under a new identity, or continue the investigation and accept the risk.

I refused to leave you.

Richard did not force me onto that road.

I chose to meet Samuel because I believed he would testify.

Your father knew the meeting was dangerous.

He begged me not to go.

Daniel looked at the recorder.

He pressed play.

Emily’s voice filled the room.

“Richard, stop calling me.”

Then Richard:

“Samuel works for Victor.”

“I know.”

“If you know, why are you meeting him?”

“Because he has Margaret’s location.”

“It’s a trap.”

“Maybe.”

“Emily, please.”

Daniel had never heard Richard beg.

Emily’s voice softened.

“If I don’t go, Victor keeps controlling all of us.”

“I can protect you.”

“No. You can hide me. That isn’t the same thing.”

A pause.

Richard said, “Daniel will blame me.”

“Then tell him the truth.”

“I can’t.”

“You mean you won’t.”

“If Daniel knows Victor is his father, Victor will use that connection.”

“He’s already using it.”

The recording crackled.

Emily said, “Promise me something.”

“What?”

“If I don’t come back, don’t turn Daniel’s grief into another prison.”

Richard did not answer.

The file ended.

Daniel sat down.

Richard had known Emily might die.

He had tried to stop her.

Then he had created false evidence that directed Daniel’s anger toward him.

Natalie sat beside him.

“He made himself the villain.”

“He made a decision for me.”

“Yes.”

“He let me spend six years believing he murdered her.”

Natalie looked at the wedding photograph.

“Maybe he thought hatred was safer than curiosity.”

Daniel remembered Richard’s words.

Anger has made you easy to control.

Richard had understood because he had helped create it.

A second recording waited on the device.

It was dated three days after Emily’s death.

Richard spoke alone.

“Daniel, I do not know whether you will ever hear this.”

His voice sounded broken.

“Emily was right. I have spent my life confusing control with protection.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I kept Margaret from telling you about Victor. I kept Natalie’s identity hidden. I kept Emily’s investigation from you. Every lie was meant to save someone.”

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“Every lie also gave Victor more power.”

The recording continued.

“If you hate me, you will stay away from the company. If you stay away from the company, Victor cannot reach you through it.”

Richard swallowed.

“I will accept your hatred.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“But if the day comes when Victor moves against you directly, I will give you everything. The USB. The trust. The truth.”

Richard leaned closer.

“I am sorry I was too much of a coward to give you the truth while Emily was alive.”

The video ended.

Natalie looked toward Daniel.

“What will you do?”

He did not answer.

His phone rang.

It was Eleanor.

“Daniel,” she said, “Richard left the hospital.”

“What?”

“He signed himself out.”

“Where did he go?”

“He took a car from the east entrance.”

Daniel stood.

A final message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Richard standing at the edge of Mulholland Drive, near the place where Emily’s car had gone over the cliff.

Beneath it were six words:

Come alone if you want answers.

Daniel showed Natalie.

“Victor is in custody,” she said.

“Then someone else is still involved.”

“Samuel?”

“In custody too.”

Daniel thought of the list of people with access to Emily’s car.

Richard.

The mechanic.

Emily.

Samuel.

Eleanor.

One name had been missing.

The person who owned the garage where the car had been stored.

Daniel’s uncle Thomas.

Thomas had transported Margaret from the motel.

Thomas had helped Victor for decades.

And Thomas had disappeared from the mansion after Richard fell.

Daniel drove toward Mulholland Drive.

He carried Emily’s recorder in his pocket.

The sun was setting when he reached the overlook.

Richard stood near the cliff, his injured arm in a sling.

Thomas stood behind him with a gun.

Daniel stepped from the car.

Thomas smiled.

“You finally watched the whole story.”

“Let him go.”

“I can’t.”

“Victor lost.”

“Victor was never the only one protecting this family.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“What does he mean?”

Richard’s eyes were filled with exhaustion.

Thomas answered.

“He means Emily discovered something even Victor didn’t know.”

“What?”

Thomas pointed the gun at Richard’s back.

“That Richard Brooks ordered your mother’s first kidnapping.”

Daniel stared at his father.

Richard did not deny it.

The final secret was not on the USB.

It stood before him.

And this time, Richard had no recording prepared to explain it.
