Chapter 1 - Thirty Minutes“Dad, please! I swear I won’t do it again!”

Milo’s shoes scraped across the polished concrete floor as Warren dragged him through the basement corridor.
The ten-year-old boy reached desperately for Warren’s wrist, but Warren’s grip stayed locked in the back of his brown hair.
“Stop whining.”
“Please!”
The industrial freezer waited at the far end of the basement.
Its steel door looked enormous beside Milo.
Warren yanked it open.
Cold blue light spilled across the boy’s terrified face.
Milo froze.
“No.”
Warren turned toward him.
His expression was almost calm.
That frightened Milo more than shouting would have.
“Thirty minutes,” Warren said.
Milo’s lips trembled.
“Dad—”
“Do it again, and you’ll stay in here forever.”
Warren shoved him through the doorway.
Milo caught himself against the metal frame.
“Please!”
He twisted around, trying to get back out.
Warren pushed again.
Milo stumbled inside.
The door slammed.
Darkness and blue light swallowed him.
For several seconds Milo simply stood there.
Then he ran to the door.
“Dad!”
He pounded it.
“Dad!”
Nothing.
“Please!”
His hands struck the steel harder.
“I’m sorry!”
Warren stood outside for several seconds listening.
Then he straightened the sleeve of his jacket and walked away.
He did not look back.
Twenty-three minutes later, Camila Ruiz came downstairs carrying a basket of folded towels.
She almost missed the sound.
A faint thump.
Then another.
Camila stopped.
She looked toward the laundry room.
Nothing.
Then—
Thump.
She slowly turned toward the freezer.
The basket slipped against her hip.
“Milo?”
Silence.
Camila put down the basket.
“Milo?”
A weak voice came through the door.
“Camila…”
Her blood went cold.
She ran.
The moment she pulled the door open, Milo nearly collapsed into her.
His face was pale.
Artificial-looking frost from the freezer’s circulation had formed across his hair and sweater.
He was trembling so violently that his teeth clicked.
“Oh, my God.”
Camila caught him.
“Milo.”
“He put me…”
The boy could barely form the words.
“He put me in there.”
“Who?”
But Camila already knew.
Milo looked toward the corridor.
“Dad.”
Camila wrapped both arms around him.
“Come here.”
Footsteps sounded behind them.
Heavy.
Fast.
Camila turned.
Warren was approaching.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Camila stood.
She moved Milo behind her.
“What did you do to him?”
Warren’s jaw tightened.
“That is none of your business.”
“You locked a child inside a freezer.”
“It wasn’t thirty minutes.”
Camila stared at him.
“You think that makes this better?”
“Move.”
“No.”
Warren stopped.
Camila had worked inside the Vale mansion for almost six years.
She had seen Warren angry.
She had seen him insult contractors, humiliate waiters, and reduce Serena to silence with five carefully chosen words.
But she had never directly challenged him.
Until now.
Warren lowered his voice.
“You work for me.”
“No,” Camila said. “I work for Serena.”
Something changed in his face.
“Move.”
Camila held her ground.
Milo clutched the back of her uniform.
Warren struck Camila once across the face.
Her head snapped sideways.
Milo screamed.
“Stop!”
Camila steadied herself.
She touched her cheek.
Then slowly looked back at Warren.
He expected fear.
Instead, Camila reached into her pocket.
She took out her phone.
Warren’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Camila saw it.
She unlocked the screen.
“Touch me again,” she said quietly, “and your wife gets this.”
She turned the phone toward him.
Warren looked.
For one second, he seemed confused.
Then his eyes widened.
The color left his face.
“Where did you get that?”
Camila said nothing.
“Give me the phone.”
“No.”
Warren stepped forward.
Camila raised it higher.
“I have another copy.”
That stopped him.
“You don’t understand what you saw.”
“I understand enough.”
Behind Camila, Milo was still trembling.
Warren stared at the phone.
On its screen was a video Camila had recorded three nights earlier.
Warren was sitting alone inside Serena’s study.
In front of him were Serena’s passport, tax records, a bank statement, and a stack of papers.
The video did not show everything.
But it showed enough.
Warren practicing Serena’s signature.
Again.
Again.
Again.
And then saying something to a man on speakerphone.
Something Camila had not understood until Milo told her what he had seen earlier that evening.
Warren’s eyes moved from the phone to Camila.
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”
A voice came from the basement doorway.
“What’s going on down here?”
Everyone froze.
Serena stood at the top of the short staircase.
She was still wearing the navy coat she had worn to dinner.
Her purse remained over one shoulder.
Her eyes moved first to Warren.
Then Camila.
Then Milo.
Her face changed.
“Milo?”
He looked terrible.
Serena rushed downstairs.
“What happened?”
Milo opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Warren recovered first.
“It looks worse than it is.”
Serena turned toward him.
“What does?”
“He was acting out.”
Camila stared at Warren in disbelief.
Serena looked at the open freezer.
Then at her son.
Then at the frost across his hair.
“Milo.”
Her voice shook.
“Were you inside there?”
Milo looked at Warren.
That one movement told Serena more than any answer could.
She knelt.
“Milo, look at me.”
His eyes slowly found hers.
“Tell me the truth.”
Milo whispered, “He said thirty minutes.”
Serena stopped breathing.
Behind her, Warren spoke quickly.
“Serena, he broke into your study and went through private financial documents. I was disciplining him.”
“You put him in a freezer?”
“The unit wasn’t cold enough to hurt him.”
Camila gave a bitter laugh.
Serena looked at her.
“What is on that phone?”
Warren moved immediately.
“Nothing.”
Camila did not lower it.
Serena stood.
“What is on the phone, Camila?”
Warren stepped between them.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
“No.”
For the first time, Serena’s voice became hard.
She pointed toward Milo.
“That is my son.”
Warren’s face tightened.
“He’s my son too.”
Milo flinched.
Serena saw it.
And suddenly another memory returned.
Milo saying he did not like being alone with Warren.
Warren explaining that Milo was jealous.
Milo begging Serena not to extend her business trip.
Warren claiming the boy was being manipulative.
Small moments Serena had explained away.
Her stomach twisted.
She turned toward Camila.
“Show me.”
Camila looked at Milo.
Then at Serena.
“This is bigger than tonight.”
Warren’s composure finally broke.
“Camila.”
She ignored him.
Serena held out her hand.
Camila took one step toward her.
Warren whispered, “If you show her that, you will regret it.”
Serena heard him.
Her eyes locked onto her husband.
“What exactly am I about to see?”
Nobody answered.
Then Milo whispered from behind them.
“The papers.”
Serena turned.
“What papers?”
Milo stared at Warren.
May you like
“The ones Dad told me never to tell you about.”
And Warren’s face went pale all over again.
