Chapter 1 - The Five Seconds Daniel Saw

Noah had only recently discovered the second-floor hallway.

At one year old, every open doorway was an invitation. Every piece of furniture was something to touch. Every staircase was simply another shape he had not yet learned to fear.

That afternoon, he crawled away from the playroom while Claire was upstairs putting away laundry.

Downstairs, Evelyn rested on the large cream sofa facing the grand staircase.

She could see him clearly.

Noah crawled toward the edge.

Evelyn’s eyes lifted.

She saw his tiny hands move closer to the first step.

“Noah.”

Her voice contained more irritation than alarm.

He did not understand.

He shifted his weight.

His knee slipped.

Then his little body tipped forward.

The first tumble was small.

The next came faster.

Noah rolled several steps before reaching the bottom.

His frightened crying exploded through the enormous foyer.

Evelyn sat upright.

She stared at him.

For one second.

Then another.

Noah screamed louder.

Instead of immediately crossing the short distance between the sofa and the staircase, Evelyn turned toward the hallway.

“MARIA!”

No answer.

“Maria!”

Still nothing.

Evelyn frowned as if the absent housemaid were the problem.

Only then did she rise.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”

She crossed the living room and bent down.

Noah was crying so hard his small chest shook.

Evelyn lifted him.

“Don’t crawl over there again.”

His hands trembled.

He did not understand the words.

He only understood that he was frightened.

Then footsteps thundered above.

Claire appeared at the top of the staircase.

She looked down.

Saw Noah crying.

Saw Evelyn holding him.

Saw the stairs.

Her face lost color.

“Oh my God, Noah!”

She ran down.

“What happened?”

“He fell.”

Claire took Noah immediately.

He grabbed her shirt in both fists and buried his face against her chest.

Claire checked his head.

His arms.

His face.

“Noah, baby, look at Mommy.”

He cried harder.

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“You were right there.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“I called Maria.”

Claire stared.

“You called the maid?”

“She was supposed to be nearby.”

“Why didn’t you get him?”

“I did.”

“After calling somebody else twice!”

“Claire, lower your voice.”

Claire’s terror turned into something sharper.

“You watched him fall.”

“I did not watch him fall. I saw him lose his balance.”

“That is watching!”

“You’re being hysterical.”

The word hit Claire harder than the argument.

“Hysterical?”

“Your child is fine.”

“You don’t know that!”

“I picked him up.”

“After lying there while he screamed!”

Evelyn’s lips tightened.

“I will not be spoken to this way in my home.”

Claire looked at Noah.

Then at Evelyn’s cold face.

Something broke.

She slapped her once.

A single sharp strike.

Evelyn’s head turned.

Her hand immediately rose to her cheek.

“Oh my God.”

And at that exact second—

the front door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

He saw Claire clutching their screaming baby.

He saw his mother facing her with one hand against her cheek.

He saw Claire’s arm lowering.

He had not seen Noah on the stairs.

He had not seen Evelyn remain on the sofa.

He had not heard her call Maria twice.

He saw five seconds.

And he reacted to those five seconds.

“CLAIRE!”

Claire snapped around.

Daniel rushed forward.

“What are you doing to my mother?!”

Claire’s face changed.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

“You have no idea what just happened.”

“I just watched you hit her!”

“Noah fell down the stairs!”

Daniel’s expression shifted instantly.

“What?”

He moved toward his son.

“Noah?”

Claire pulled him closer.

“Your mother watched him fall.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She appeared shaken.

Her cheek reddening.

Eyes wet.

“I was helping him.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Helping?”

“I picked him up.”

“That is not what happened!”

Daniel raised both hands.

“Stop.”

Claire stared at him.

“Don’t you dare tell me to stop.”

“I need to know if Noah is hurt.”

For once, that ended the argument.

They took Noah to the emergency department.

No serious injury was found.

He was frightened and bruised, but medically stable.

Claire stayed beside him.

Daniel sat across the examination room.

Neither spoke for nearly twenty minutes.

Finally Daniel said:

“You shouldn’t have hit her.”

Claire looked at him.

“I know.”

That surprised him.

She continued.

“I lost control. I’m responsible for that.”

Daniel’s expression softened slightly.

Then Claire said:

“But if you think the slap is the whole story, we have a bigger problem than your mother.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message from Maria.

He opened it.

Mr. Daniel, I’m sorry. You need to know why the safety gate was not on the staircase today.

His stomach tightened.

Another message appeared.

Mrs. Evelyn told me to remove it this morning.

May you like

Daniel slowly looked at Claire.

And for the first time since walking through the front door, he wondered what had happened before the five seconds he saw.
