Chapter 11 - INSIDE THE COMPLIANCE ROOMThe guest placed one hand on the Ferrari’s roof.

A security officer immediately asked him to step away.

Richard raised his voice.

“The transfer has not been finalized.”

“It has,” Helena said as we approached.

Richard looked at her.

“I received no confirmation.”

“You were removed from the transaction.”

The wealthy guest frowned.

“I was told the buyer’s funds might fail verification.”

I looked at Richard.

He had made the claim after watching the bank confirm more than enough assets.

This was no longer prejudice based on appearance.

It was deliberate interference.

Helena spoke to the guest.

“The vehicle has been sold. Mr. Hayes had no authority to offer it.”

The man removed his hand.

Unlike Richard, he looked embarrassed.

He turned to me.

“My apologies. I was given incorrect information.”

“Accepted.”

He walked away.

Richard remained.

“Mr. Cole brought cash in an old suitcase. Caution was justified.”

“Caution is why we used the compliance room,” Janet said.

“You didn’t know who he was.”

“I knew his identity matched the invitation.”

“He could have been laundering money.”

Janet’s expression hardened.

“That possibility was examined through required procedures. You attempted to bypass those procedures as soon as you saw his net worth.”

Richard had not truly cared whether the cash was lawful.

He cared whether I was important.

When I looked poor, he wanted me removed.

When he learned I was wealthy, he wanted control of the commission.

When he lost control, he tried to destroy the transaction.

The pattern was complete.

Helena asked him to surrender his gala badge.

Richard stared at her.

“You cannot remove me during my own event.”

“This is a company event.”

“I built it.”

“You manage it.”

He unclipped the badge.

The motion was slow.

Painful.

Titles can become dangerous when someone mistakes temporary authority for personal ownership.

Richard placed the badge in Helena’s hand.

Then he looked at me.

“Are you satisfied?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

“You’ve taken my position.”

“I purchased a car.”

“You embarrassed me.”

“You spoke into a room full of people.”

He stepped closer.

Security moved between us.

I remained still.

“My father asked your company for one thing twenty-one years ago,” I said.

“What?”

“To make sure his son never believed respectable people behaved like you.”

Richard looked away.

“He failed.”

“No.”

I took the keys from Olivia.

“He taught me your behavior had nothing to do with my worth.”

Richard was escorted from the gala.

This time, he did not return.

The crowd watched.

I wished they had not.

Discipline should not become entertainment any more than humiliation should.

I asked Helena to clear the immediate display area.

Then Olivia and I completed the delivery inspection.

Under the left rear badge, we found the tiny imperfection.

Exactly where my father said it would be.
