Chapter 1 - He Never MovedBrody did not know what stairs were supposed to mean.

To him, they were another place to explore.
Another edge to touch.
Another strange part of the enormous Hartley mansion that seemed to stretch farther every day his one-year-old legs and hands learned to carry him.
He crawled along the second-floor hallway.
One hand.
One knee.
Then the other.
Downstairs, Colton lay across the large sofa.
The sofa faced the grand staircase directly.
He could see Brody.
Perfectly.
Colton glanced up.
He saw the little boy reach the top step.
Brody leaned forward.
His hand slipped.
His body tilted.
For one suspended second, fear flashed across the baby’s face.
Then he tumbled.
“Brody!”
No one shouted.
Not Colton.
He stayed on the sofa.
Brody rolled awkwardly down several carpeted steps, his small body twisting naturally as gravity carried him toward the bottom.
He landed against the lower landing.
Then screamed.
A frightened, piercing cry filled the luxurious living room.
Colton sighed.
He did not rush forward.
“ISABEL!”
Brody cried harder.
No answer.
Colton turned his head toward the kitchen.
“Isabel! Come pick him up!”
Still nothing.
Only then did Colton push himself from the sofa.
He walked toward Brody with the irritation of someone responding to an inconvenient sound.
Brody reached both arms upward.
Colton picked him up.
“Don’t crawl around like that again.”
Brody sobbed.
His tiny fingers grabbed uselessly at Colton’s shirt.
Then footsteps thundered overhead.
Megan appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her face changed instantly.
“BRODY!”
She ran down.
Colton had barely turned before Megan reached him.
She pulled Brody from his arms.
“Oh my God. Baby. Baby, look at Mommy.”
Brody clung to her.
His crying became broken gasps.
Megan checked his face.
His arms.
His legs.
No blood.
No obvious injury.
But maternal panic was already tearing through her.
“What happened?”
Colton shrugged.
“He fell.”
Megan stared at him.
“What?”
“He crawled too close.”
Her eyes moved toward the sofa.
Then toward the stairs.
Then back.
“You were sitting right there.”
Colton’s expression remained flat.
“So?”
Megan’s face went white.
“You saw him crawling toward those stairs and you didn’t stop him?”
“I called the housemaid.”
Megan froze.
For a second she seemed not to understand the sentence.
“He’s one year old.”
Colton exhaled.
“Megan—”
“He’s one year old!”
Brody cried against her shoulder.
Megan’s fear exploded into fury.
Her hand moved before reason caught up.
SLAP.
The sound cracked through the foyer.
Colton staggered half a step.
He grabbed his cheek.
“Oh my God!”
“You’re cruel!”
Megan’s entire body shook.
“Is this how you treat my son just because he isn’t yours?!”
The front door opened.
Mrs. Hartley stepped inside.
Elegant coat.
Leather handbag.
Perfect posture.
She stopped.
Her eyes took in three things.
Her son holding his cheek.
Megan standing opposite him.
Brody screaming in Megan’s arms.
“MEGAN!”
Megan spun around.
Mrs. Hartley rushed closer.
“What did you just do to my son?!”
Megan’s mouth opened.
Colton said nothing.
That silence lasted less than three seconds.
It would cost all of them months.
“Mrs. Hartley—”
“Did you hit him?”
Brody buried his face against Megan’s neck.
Megan looked toward Colton.
“Tell her.”
Colton’s eyes met hers.
He could have told the truth.
He could have said:
I watched Brody fall.
I didn’t move.
I called Isabel instead.
He didn’t.
Mrs. Hartley stepped between them.
“I asked you a question.”
“Yes,” Megan said.
“I slapped him.”
Mrs. Hartley stared at her.
Megan continued—
“Because your son sat on that sofa and watched Brody fall down those stairs.”
Mrs. Hartley turned sharply.
Colton shook his head.
“That isn’t what happened.”
Megan’s expression changed.
“What?”
Colton looked at his mother.
“I looked up after he lost his balance.”
“You liar.”
“Megan.”
“You were watching him!”
Mrs. Hartley raised her voice.
“Enough!”
Brody cried harder.
Megan rocked him.
“We’re going to the hospital.”
Colton rolled his eyes.
“He’s fine.”
That was the moment something inside Megan changed.
Not broke.
Clarified.
She looked at the man she had married fourteen months earlier.
The man who promised her he understood Brody came with her.
The man who said he didn’t need biology to be a family.
“Move.”
Colton stepped aside.
Mrs. Hartley followed Megan toward the door.
“You’re not driving like this.”
“I can drive.”
“You’re hysterical.”
“My baby just fell down your staircase while your son watched.”
Mrs. Hartley stiffened.
“You do not know that.”
“I know what he told me.”
“What?”
Megan turned.
“He said he called the housemaid.”
Mrs. Hartley looked at Colton.
For the first time, a tiny crack appeared in her certainty.
Colton answered quickly.
“I called Isabel after I heard the crying.”
Megan stared at him.
Another lie.
Brody whimpered against her.
She left.
At the hospital, doctors examined him.
No skull fracture.
No broken bones.
No significant neurological concerns.
He would need observation.
Megan should have felt relief.
Instead she sat beside the hospital crib and replayed Colton’s face.
Calm.
Almost bored.
Her phone vibrated.
Mrs. Hartley.
Megan ignored it.
Then another message appeared.
COLTON:
You assaulted me in front of my mother.
We’ll deal with that when you calm down.
Megan stared at the words.
Not—
How is Brody?
Not—
Is he okay?
Nothing about the baby.
Then another message appeared.
From Isabel.
Megan almost ignored that too.
Then she read it.
MRS. MEGAN, I AM SORRY.
I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING.
MR. COLTON SAW BRODY BEFORE HE FELL.
Megan stopped breathing.
May you like
A second message came.
AND THAT IS NOT THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO KNOW.
