Chapter 1 - WHAT MARIA SAWMaria Lopez had worked inside the Bennett mansion long enough to know which doors required knocking twice.

Claire Bennett’s bedroom was one of them.

That afternoon, Maria carried a stack of freshly pressed linens down the second-floor hallway. The Beverly Hills mansion was unusually quiet. Sunlight reflected off the marble floors, turning the long corridor almost gold beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Maria reached Claire’s room.

She knocked.

No answer.

She knocked again.

Still nothing.

The bedroom door was slightly open.

Maria pushed it gently with two fingers.

“Miss Bennett?”

She stepped inside.

Then froze.

Claire stood near the foot of the bed in her champagne-colored silk dress.

Natalie Brooks was in her arms.

Not the casual embrace of two friends saying goodbye.

They were holding each other closely, their faces only inches apart.

For one second, nobody moved.

Natalie noticed Maria first.

Her dark eyes widened.

Claire turned.

The softness disappeared from her face instantly.

Maria’s stomach tightened.

“I’m sorry.”

She backed away.

“I should have waited.”

She placed the linens on the nearest chair and hurried into the hallway.

She had no intention of telling anyone.

What Claire did in her private life was none of Maria’s business.

She had worked for wealthy families for twenty-six years. She had seen arguments, affairs, divorces, addictions, children who hated their parents and parents who barely knew their children.

The one thing that had kept Maria employed was simple.

She did not gossip.

But Claire did not know what Maria intended.

She only knew she had been seen.

“Maria!”

The sharpness in Claire’s voice made Maria walk faster.

Behind her came the click of designer heels.

Then Natalie’s.

Maria reached the darker section of hallway near the main staircase.

Claire stepped around her and blocked the way.

“Where are you going?”

Maria stopped.

“To finish downstairs.”

Claire stared at her.

“What exactly did you see?”

Maria glanced toward Natalie.

The younger woman looked frightened.

“Nothing that concerns me.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is the only answer I have.”

Maria tried to move around her.

Claire stepped sideways.

Blocked her again.

“Listen to me.”

Maria’s heart began beating harder.

She had known Claire since she was twenty-two.

She had ironed her dresses.

Cleaned champagne from carpets after parties.

Stayed late when Robert traveled.

Prepared soup when Claire had the flu.

She had never seen this expression before.

Claire leaned closer.

“If you tell anyone about this…”

She stopped.

Maria swallowed.

Natalie whispered:

“Claire.”

Claire ignored her.

Maria looked around the hallway.

There was nobody there.

“I said I’m not telling anyone.”

Claire slowly raised her right hand toward her own throat.

Her fingers moved once across the air.

A small gesture.

Not touching Maria.

Not technically doing anything.

But there was no misunderstanding it.

Maria stepped backward.

Her shoulder almost touched the wall.

“Miss Bennett…”

Natalie looked horrified now.

“Claire, stop.”

Claire’s eyes remained fixed on Maria.

“You understand me?”

Then Maria’s expression suddenly changed.

Her eyes shifted beyond Claire.

Toward the hallway entrance.

Claire noticed.

For the first time, uncertainty entered her face.

She slowly turned.

Robert Bennett stood several steps away.

He had simply walked into the hallway from his home office.

His dark navy suit jacket was still buttoned. His phone remained in one hand.

He had not been hiding.

He had not been listening from around a corner.

He had simply arrived.

And seen enough.

Robert’s eyes moved first to Maria.

Then to Claire’s raised hand.

Then to Natalie.

Finally back to his daughter.

Nobody spoke.

Claire’s face slowly lost color.

“Dad…”

Robert said nothing.

His expression was almost impossible to read.

That frightened Claire more than anger would have.

Maria lowered her eyes.

Natalie took a small step away from Claire.

Robert finally slipped his phone into his pocket.

He looked toward Maria.

“Are you all right?”

Maria opened her mouth.

Claire answered first.

“She misunderstood.”

Robert looked at his daughter.

“I didn’t ask you.”

Claire went silent.

Maria’s hands were trembling.

She hated that they were.

“I’m fine, Mr. Bennett.”

Robert looked at the hand Claire had lowered to her side.

“No,” he said quietly.

“You’re not.”

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“Dad, can we please talk privately?”

Robert did not move.

“Maria.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Go downstairs.”

Maria hesitated.

“I don’t want any trouble.”

“You’re not in trouble.”

Claire looked at her father.

Maria noticed the fear on Claire’s face.

It surprised her.

Then Robert added:

“I’ll speak with you later.”

Maria nodded.

She passed them and headed toward the stairs.

Her legs felt weak.

She heard nothing more until she reached the first floor.

Then, faintly, Claire’s voice came from above.

“You have no idea what she walked in on.”

Robert’s answer was quieter.

“I know what I walked in on.”

Maria stopped.

She did not turn around.

A few seconds later Natalie spoke.

“Mr. Bennett, please.”

Then nothing.

Maria continued toward the kitchen.

She told herself the worst part was over.

Robert had witnessed the threat.

He knew she had done nothing wrong.

For the first time since Claire stepped into that hallway, Maria felt safe.

She was wrong.

Because within twenty-four hours, Claire Bennett would tell her father a completely different version of what happened.

May you like

And Robert Bennett would have to choose between the woman who had worked faithfully inside his home for almost a decade—

and his only daughter.
