Chapter 22 - Cameron’s One Question

They met in the empty ceremony hall.

Cameron chose it deliberately.

The wedding décor was gone.

No roses.

No guests.

No altar arrangement.

Just a rental space being prepared for another event.

Isabella stood where Julian kissed her.

Cameron stood where he had been holding her hand.

“I have one question.”

She nodded.

“If Julian had never walked into our wedding, would you ever have told me you were married to him?”

Isabella had rehearsed answers for days.

Yes, eventually.

I wanted to.

I almost did.

None were fully true.

So she stood in the place where her hidden past exploded and said:

“I don’t know.”

Cameron closed his eyes.

She continued.

“I want to tell you yes.”

He nodded.

“But I built my life around never opening that room again.”

His face tightened.

“So probably not.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Cameron looked toward the ceiling.

“That hurts more than the legal issue.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It means our marriage would have begun with something you intended never to tell me.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Isabella did not defend herself with trauma.

Did not mention Malcolm.

Did not say she was a victim.

She was.

It did not answer this.

Cameron put his hands in his pockets.

“I can’t reschedule the wedding.”

Her chest tightened.

“I know.”

“I don’t know if we stay together.”

“I know.”

“I need to become capable of seeing you without immediately wondering what else is missing.”

She nodded.

“And you need to decide who you are without me or Julian deciding first.”

That surprised her.

“What does that mean?”

“You went from Julian’s wife to Julian’s widow to my fiancée.”

He paused.

“When did you belong only to yourself?”

Isabella looked at him.

She had no answer.

Cameron stepped closer.

“I love you.”

She started crying.

“But I don’t think love is enough information.”

She laughed through tears.

“That is the most Cameron sentence ever.”

He smiled sadly.

Then took something from his pocket.

The wedding ring.

The one he had removed from the ceremony table.

Isabella stared.

He placed it in her palm.

“I bought it for you.”

“Cameron—”

“I’m not putting it on your finger.”

She closed her hand around it.

“What am I supposed to do with it?”

“Whatever you want.”

That was the point.

He kissed her forehead.

Then walked away.

Isabella stood alone in the empty hall holding a ring that belonged to no current promise.

For the first time, no man was demanding a decision from her.

The freedom felt terrible.

And necessary.
