Chapter 9 - Eleanor’s Visit to Graham CrossEleanor admitted visiting Graham.

Through her attorney.
She said it was to discuss outstanding business matters.
She denied poisoning him.
She denied causing Samantha’s crash.
She denied intending Robert Hale’s death.
Every event had an explanation.
Robert:
“Tragic accident caused by negligent subcontractor.”
Samantha:
“She was driving too fast in heavy rain.”
Graham:
“He had a heart condition.”
Dominic:
“I was trying to calm my grieving son.”
Caleb and Ivy:
“They needed discipline and structure.”
Money:
“Family assets temporarily moved to protect liquidity.”
Documents:
“Administrative errors.”
Every accusation became misunderstanding.
Every victim became unstable, reckless, sick, difficult, or confused.
Dominic saw the pattern now.
Eleanor did not simply deny actions.
She reassigned responsibility.
Robert was stubborn.
Samantha paranoid.
Graham unhealthy.
Dominic grieving.
Caleb defiant.
Ivy dishonest.
Eleanor remained the one responsible adult in every story.
That illusion had protected her for years.
Until the children found the key.
Federal investigators joined the financial case.
State investigators reopened Samantha’s crash for review.
Robert’s workplace death was examined again.
Graham’s body could not provide new evidence; cremated years earlier.
The case would never become clean.
Dominic struggled with that.
He wanted one document saying:
YOUR MOTHER KILLED THEM.
Or:
SHE DID NOT.
Instead, reality remained frustratingly layered.
Evidence suggested Eleanor participated in corrupt payments.
She knew Robert’s safety warning.
She made a reckless statement pushing him onto the platform.
After his death, she received money.
Evidence suggested she followed Samantha in dangerous weather while Samantha carried records.
But no physical proof showed Eleanor struck Samantha’s car.
Evidence showed Eleanor visited Graham before he died.
Nothing proved she caused his death.
And evidence now strongly showed she secretly drugged Dominic.
That part was clearest.
Then investigators found video from Eleanor’s home security archive.
She had deleted clips.
Cloud backup retained fragments.
One showed Dominic arriving at her house six weeks earlier.
He drank tea.
Twenty minutes later he became visibly drowsy.
Eleanor guided him to a chair.
Then positioned her phone.
“Dominic, do you think you need help managing the children?”
He mumbled.
“I don’t know.”
“Would you trust me?”
“Yes.”
“Would you sign something if it protected them?”
He nodded weakly.
Naomi paused.
“There.”
“What?”
“She was trying to obtain consent.”
Dominic stared.
Not a signature yet.
But video evidence to support one.
Another clip.
Eleanor practiced his signature on tracing paper.
Dominic felt physically ill.
Then police found a notebook inside her desk.
Not Samantha’s.
Eleanor’s.
Lists.
No confessions.
But plans.
Dominic travel — May 18–23.
Westbridge intake — May 23.
Keller letter.
Guardianship petition.
D.V. evaluation.
Move trust files.
Secure Raleigh POA.
Dominic stared.
May 23.
The day he returned early.
Everything was scheduled.
One line:
C/I separated initially.
Caleb and Ivy.
“Separated?”
Naomi whispered.
“Different facilities?”
They checked.
Westbridge had intake for both.
But another school had been contacted about Caleb.
One specializing in “high-conflict adolescent boys.”
South Carolina.
Eleanor planned to separate siblings.
Why?
Because together they could confirm each other’s stories.
Apart, easier to label.
Another line:
M.A. termination.
Marta Alvarez.
Eleanor planned to fire Marta.
Then:
D.V. no visitors first week.
Dominic Vale?
No.
Likely Dominic after “evaluation.”
“What evaluation?” he asked.
Naomi searched the packet.
A private wellness center outside Charlotte.
Eleanor had booked Dominic for a seventy-two-hour “executive mental health assessment.”
Under what authority?
A form bearing Dominic’s forged signature.
He laughed without humor.
Children away.
Marta fired.
Dominic inside a private facility.
Eleanor with trusts and power-of-attorney papers.
Forty-eight hours might have been enough to move millions and reshape the legal landscape.
“She built a coup inside my family.”
Naomi did not disagree.
Then they found one final line.
S.V. files destroyed before return.
Samantha Vale.
Dominic stared.
The key had prevented that.
Caleb hiding it in his sock had prevented that.
A twelve-year-old had protected evidence adults failed to see.
Dominic went upstairs.
Caleb sat at his desk.
“Dad?”
Dominic sat beside him.
“I need to tell you something.”
Caleb immediately looked worried.
“You’re not in trouble.”
“I know.”
Progress.
Dominic smiled.
“You hiding Mom’s key mattered.”
Caleb looked down.
“I thought Grandma would get it.”
“You were scared.”
“Yes.”
“And you still kept it.”
Caleb shrugged.
“Mom wrote not to let her.”
Dominic’s eyes filled.
“You listened to your mother when I didn’t even know she was talking.”
Caleb looked at him.
“Are you mad at Mom for hiding stuff?”
The question hurt.
“Yes.”
Caleb looked surprised.
“And I love her.”
“How both?”
Dominic smiled sadly.
“People are complicated.”
Caleb thought.
“Grandma too?”
Dominic hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Do you still love her?”
He took longer.
“Yes.”
Caleb’s face tightened.
Dominic continued:
“And she is not coming near you.”
His son relaxed.
“That’s important.”
“More important than love?”
Dominic looked at him.
“Sometimes love tells you to stay.”
He paused.
“Sometimes love tells you to put a locked door between someone and a child.”
Caleb nodded.
Then:
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“What was Grandma trying to make me tell her when she held me down?”
“The key?”
Caleb shook his head.
“Before that.”
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
“She kept asking what Ivy remembered from Mom’s car.”
Dominic froze.
“Ivy?”
Caleb nodded.
“She said Ivy was too little to remember.”
Dominic’s heart pounded.
Ivy had been five when Samantha died.
“What was Ivy supposed to remember?”
Caleb looked toward the hallway.
“I don’t know.”
May you like
But Dominic suddenly realized Samantha may not have been alone in the hours before her crash.
And his nine-year-old daughter might have carried a memory for four years that Eleanor desperately wanted erased.
