Chapter 7 - The SignatureThe handwriting expert needed nine days.

Brooke hated every one.

When the report arrived, Claire read it first.

Then pushed it across the table.

“The signature on the lake-house transfer is probably yours.”

Brooke froze.

“What?”

“It shows strong indications of authenticity.”

Brooke stared at the page.

“No.”

“Brooke.”

“I would remember signing away Dad’s house.”

“Maybe you didn’t know what the document did.”

That was worse.

Brooke searched her memory.

Eighteen months earlier.

Ethan had pneumonia.

Brooke had been sleeping three hours a night.

Nolan handled bills.

One evening he brought documents into the hospital waiting room.

“Just trust paperwork.”

She remembered signing.

Three pages.

Maybe four.

One page folded backward.

Brooke covered her mouth.

“He tricked me.”

“Possibly.”

“Can we prove it?”

“Harder.”

The credit-card signature, however, was likely not hers.

That application appeared forged.

Different crimes.

Different evidence.

The trust transfer might have been fraud by deception rather than forgery.

Claire explained carefully.

“If Nolan knowingly misrepresented what you were signing, there may still be civil remedies and possibly criminal exposure depending on facts and jurisdiction. But we need evidence.”

Brooke found evidence somewhere unexpected.

Ethan’s tablet.

Not because Ethan recorded Nolan intentionally.

He had filmed himself building a model airplane in the hospital waiting room that night.

Brooke appeared in the background.

So did Nolan.

The video ran for nineteen minutes.

At minute twelve, Nolan placed paperwork in front of Brooke.

His voice was faint but audible.

“Just insurance updates.”

Brooke signed.

“Anything important?”

“No.”

She signed another.

Then another.

The camera captured Nolan sliding one page from beneath another after Brooke looked away.

Claire replayed it.

Again.

Again.

The actual text was unreadable.

But Nolan’s behavior was clear.

Brooke whispered:

“He lied about what I was signing.”

“Looks like it.”

Ethan stood in the doorway.

Brooke immediately closed the laptop.

“What are you doing?”

“Looking at an old video.”

“My airplane?”

“Yes.”

He smiled slightly.

“That one crashed.”

Brooke felt tears rise unexpectedly.

“So did a lot of things.”

Ethan looked confused.

She hugged him.

That evening Nolan called from his treatment facility.

He had voluntarily entered a thirty-day inpatient program after his attorney advised him that genuine treatment would matter both personally and legally.

Brooke answered only because Claire approved a short conversation.

“I remember the hospital papers,” Brooke said.

Silence.

Nolan breathed heavily.

“I figured you would.”

“You told me they were insurance forms.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I needed the transfer.”

“For Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Were you high?”

“No.”

The honesty mattered.

Brooke closed her eyes.

“So you did it sober.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor told me if I could bring collateral, he’d make me a partner.”

“You wanted to be rich?”

“We were already rich.”

“Then what did you want?”

Nolan’s voice became bitter.

“Something that was mine.”

Brooke stopped.

There it was.

The same resentment he had thrown at her during arguments.

Her father’s mansion.

Her inheritance.

Her trust.

Nolan had always lived comfortably.

But comfortably on wealth he viewed as Brooke’s.

“I hated asking you before making big decisions,” he said.

“You didn’t have to ask. You had your own income.”

“Not like yours.”

“So you stole control.”

“I convinced myself I was building something.”

“With Ethan’s inheritance.”

Nolan began crying.

“I know.”

Brooke whispered:

“You did to his lake house exactly what you did to his piggy bank.”

Silence.

“You decided that because you were his father, what belonged to him belonged to you.”

Nolan could not answer.

Brooke ended the call.

She no longer believed addiction had created Nolan’s entitlement.

May you like

It had amplified something that was already there.

That distinction changed everything.
