Chapter 1 - The Second Brielle Stopped CryingBrielle Mercer needed less than ten seconds to make herself look like a victim.

Silas saw every one of them.

She stood in the middle of the upstairs family room, breathing fast but not because she was frightened. Her eyes kept moving toward the hallway.

Listening.

Waiting.

Then she lifted both hands and dragged her fingers through her carefully styled blond hair until it looked wild.

Silas stared at her.

“Brielle, what are you doing?”

She ignored him.

Her fingers closed around the sleeve of her cream blouse.

Rip.

The thin fabric tore at the shoulder.

Silas took one instinctive step backward.

“Stop.”

Brielle looked at him.

There was no panic in her face.

No tears.

Only calculation.

Then she screamed.

“HELP ME!”

The sound exploded through the Mercer house.

Silas understood immediately.

“Maddox!”

Heavy footsteps came from downstairs.

Brielle screamed again.

“PLEASE! SOMEONE HELP!”

Then she did something Silas would remember for the rest of his life.

She smiled at him.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Then the smile vanished.

Her face collapsed into fear.

Tears appeared.

By the time Maddox rushed through the doorway, Brielle was trembling.

“What happened?”

She ran directly into her husband's arms.

“Maddox!”

He caught her.

“What happened?”

Brielle buried her face against his chest.

“Your brother…”

Maddox looked at Silas.

“What?”

“He attacked me.”

Everything inside Maddox changed.

Silas watched it happen.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then rage.

“No,” Silas said.

Maddox released Brielle and crossed the room.

“You touched my wife?”

“Maddox, listen.”

“You touched her?”

“No.”

Maddox grabbed the front of Silas's shirt.

Silas did not strike back.

He did not even push hard.

He twisted sideways enough to avoid the first punch.

“Maddox.”

“You son of a—”

“Look behind her.”

Maddox froze.

“What?”

Silas pointed.

“Behind Brielle.”

She went still.

On the bookshelf behind her sat a white baby monitor camera.

Small.

Almost invisible among framed family photographs.

A tiny green light glowed beneath the lens.

Silas looked directly at his brother.

“It has been recording since she came into this room.”

Brielle's crying stopped.

Completely.

Only for one heartbeat.

Maddox saw it.

Silas saw him see it.

Then Brielle forced out another sob.

But something had changed.

Maddox's grip loosened.

“Brielle…”

She wiped her face.

“What?”

“You just stopped crying.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You stopped.”

“I was shocked!”

Maddox slowly released Silas.

Brielle grabbed his arm.

“Don't let him manipulate you. He attacked me.”

Silas straightened his shirt.

“I never touched her.”

“You're lying!”

“Then play the recording.”

Silence.

Brielle stared at the camera.

Maddox looked between them.

His breathing was still hard.

He loved his wife.

He loved his brother.

Thirty seconds earlier, one had told him the other had done something unforgivable.

Now only one of them seemed terrified of the truth being replayed.

Maddox walked toward the bookshelf.

Brielle stepped in front of him.

“The camera doesn't record continuously.”

Silas answered.

“That one does when it detects motion.”

“How would you know?”

“Because I turned it on.”

Maddox looked at him.

“Why?”

Silas hesitated.

That hesitation made Brielle attack.

“You see?”

She pointed.

“He planned this!”

Maddox looked sharply at his brother.

“Planned what?”

Silas's jaw tightened.

“I knew she wanted me in this room alone.”

Brielle laughed through tears.

“This is insane.”

Silas ignored her.

“She texted me this morning.”

“For what?”

“To talk about you.”

Maddox's expression changed.

“About me?”

Silas removed his phone.

Brielle lunged for it.

Maddox caught her wrist.

Everyone froze.

Brielle stared at him.

Maddox stared at his own hand around hers.

Slowly, he released her.

Silas opened the message.

From Brielle.

We need to talk privately. Don't tell Maddox. Family room at 4. It's about something he can't know yet.

Maddox read it.

Then looked at his wife.

“What couldn't I know?”

Brielle swallowed.

“Nothing.”

“You told him it was about me.”

“I wanted to ask him about your birthday.”

Silas almost laughed.

“Your husband's birthday is seven months away.”

Brielle's eyes hardened.

Maddox noticed.

“Play the camera.”

“No.”

Three people stared at her.

Brielle tried again.

“Maddox, please. I don't want to watch myself being attacked.”

Silas said nothing.

That was smart.

The less he said, the weaker Brielle's performance became.

Maddox lifted his phone and opened the baby-monitor application.

The camera belonged to his three-year-old daughter, Ivy. They used the family room as her afternoon playroom when relatives visited. The device automatically saved motion clips to the cloud.

The newest recording was eighteen minutes long.

Maddox pressed it.

Brielle walked into frame.

Perfect hair.

Perfect blouse.

No fear.

Silas entered forty seconds later.

The first words came clearly through the speaker.

Silas:

“Why did you tell me not to tell Maddox?”

Brielle:

“Because if he knows what I know, your entire family blows apart.”

Maddox looked up.

Brielle's face went white.

On the recording, Silas answered:

“What do you know?”

Brielle smiled.

“Enough to make you disappear.”

The room became silent.

Maddox slowly looked back at his wife.

May you like

The recording had only just begun.

And already, her accusation was falling apart.
