Chapter 7 - The Old Accusation Against GideonGideon did not deny it.

That surprised Bennett.

They sat in the den of Gideon’s smaller townhouse because Bennett could not bear another serious conversation in the family library.

“My first wife filed for a protective order.”

Bennett watched him.

“Why did you never tell Mom?”

“I did.”

That answer relieved him and annoyed him simultaneously.

“What happened?”

Gideon took a long breath.

“Her name was Marissa.”

Bennett knew that much.

The marriage lasted five years.

No children.

Ended long before Gideon met Eleanor.

“We were terrible together.”

“Did you hurt her?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten her?”

Gideon hesitated.

“I said things I regret.”

Bennett’s body tightened.

“What things?”

“When she told me she was leaving, I said I would ruin the man she had been seeing.”

“Was she seeing someone?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t make the threat okay.”

“I know.”

Gideon looked directly at him.

“I punched a wall once.”

Bennett said nothing.

“I blocked a doorway during one argument.”

The words landed heavily.

“Did you touch her?”

“No.”

“Could she have felt trapped?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Gideon did not sanitize himself.

Marissa filed for an emergency protective order claiming intimidation and fear.

Then withdrew it after Gideon moved out and agreed to communicate only through attorneys.

No finding of violence.

No criminal charge.

But not nothing either.

“I went to counseling,” Gideon said.

“Why?”

“Because I scared someone I claimed to love.”

Bennett looked down.

The sentence hit after his own reaction in the library.

He had grabbed Gideon without evidence.

Gideon continued:

“Your mother knew all of it before our third date.”

“Of course she did.”

“She ran a background check.”

Bennett laughed despite himself.

“That sounds like Mom.”

“It was invasive.”

“Also sounds like Mom.”

Gideon smiled faintly.

Then:

“Rosalie learned about Marissa somehow.”

“Adrian.”

“Probably.”

“Why would Adrian have it?”

“When Eleanor updated estate documents after we married, Grant—Adrian’s former partner—no, stay with Adrian. Adrian requested background material on both spouses.”

“He kept it twenty years?”

“Lawyers keep everything.”

Bennett’s jaw tightened.

Then Claire called.

She had found Adrian’s private strategy memo.

Not meant for court.

Personal notes.

G.S. vulnerability — prior domestic allegation. B.M. highly protective of spouse. If conflict escalates, disclosure could neutralize trustee credibility.

Bennett stared.

“He wrote that?”

“Yes.”

“What does neutralize mean?”

“Ambiguous enough that he can deny specifics.”

Of course.

Adrian rarely wrote crimes in direct language.

He wrote possibilities.

Leverage.

Vulnerability.

Rosalie later admitted Adrian told her about Marissa two weeks before the confrontation.

He framed it as a warning.

“Be careful meeting Gideon alone. He has a history.”

Rosalie asked:

“What history?”

Adrian described the protective-order application.

When Gideon confronted her with the forged trust documents, that information came back.

She knew Bennett would react strongly if she accused Gideon of sexual aggression.

She chose the worst possible lie because she believed an older allegation made it plausible.

Bennett felt sick.

Then another question emerged.

Why did Rosalie lock the door?

She said she needed Gideon unable to leave before Bennett arrived.

She had texted Bennett twenty minutes earlier:

Can you come home? Gideon is acting strange.

Bennett never noticed because his phone was in Do Not Disturb during a meeting.

Rosalie expected him sooner.

When he did not respond, she waited.

Gideon arrived unexpectedly through the hallway door after checking the trust files.

Rosalie adapted.

Tore her sleeve.

Screamed loud enough for household staff? But Bennett happened to arrive? Need continuity: user said Bennett runs in, not where he was. Could have been downstairs because he came home earlier. Let's reconcile. Perhaps Bennett had returned minutes before and Rosalie heard front door via smart alert. She then screamed. Yes.

Rosalie admitted she saw security notification:

BENNETT — FRONT ENTRY

Then acted.

That made it deliberate.

Timed.

Not panic in the abstract.

She knew he had entered the house.

Bennett replayed his own memory.

He came through the foyer.

Dropped his keys.

Heard the scream.

Ran upstairs.

Rosalie had watched his entry through her phone.

She knew exactly when to perform.

Claire asked:

“Do you want the worst part?”

Bennett looked at her.

“No.”

She told him anyway.

Rosalie had made a test recording the previous night.

A fifteen-second video on her phone.

She stood before the mirror.

Hair messy.

Sleeve tugged.

Voice whispering:

“Bennett, he forced himself on me.”

Then she deleted it.

Cloud backup retained it.

Bennett sat down.

So it was not spontaneous.

She had planned the accusation before Gideon confronted her.

Which meant she knew he would confront her.

How?

Someone told her he had found the transfers.

Gideon said he told no one.

Not Bennett.

Not Rosalie.

Only one person.

He had called Adrian.

As family attorney.

“I told him the signatures looked wrong.”

Bennett stared.

“You called Adrian before going to Rosalie?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian warned her.”

Gideon closed his eyes.

“Apparently.”

That betrayal landed differently.

Gideon had gone to the family lawyer for guidance.

The lawyer alerted the person under suspicion.

Then helped prepare to destroy the whistleblower.

Claire’s phone buzzed.

She read the new report.

“What now?”

Bennett asked.

“Adrian made another call after Gideon contacted him.”

“To Rosalie?”

“No.”

“To whom?”

Claire turned the phone around.

The recipient was Bennett’s own therapist, Dr. Simon Vale.

Bennett stared.

“My therapist?”

“Yes.”

The call lasted nineteen minutes.

And two days later, Dr. Vale wrote a private letter saying Bennett was “emotionally volatile under perceived threats to intimate relationships.”

A sentence Adrian could have used to explain why Bennett’s judgment should not be trusted after Rosalie accused Gideon.

The conspiracy had been preparing evidence against Bennett too.
