Chapter 1 - The Handle That Didn’t TurnVanessa lay beside Marcus on the enormous bed as if the mansion already belonged to both of them.

The afternoon sun filtered through the tall windows, catching the polished brass on the dresser and the crystal glasses on the bedside table.
Marcus traced one finger along her shoulder.
“When are you finally leaving him?”
Vanessa looked at him.
Her eyes were relaxed.
Confident.
She gave him the small smile he had learned meant she was already three moves ahead.
“Soon.”
Marcus frowned.
“You’ve been saying that for six months.”
“Because six months ago, the timing was wrong.”
“And now?”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Now Daniel is almost where I need him.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Meaning?”
“Once I get this house…”
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“…and my share of his assets…”
She brushed her lips against his ear.
“…then we’ll finally be together.”
Marcus smiled.
Relief.
Impatience disappearing.
“Promise?”
Vanessa’s smile deepened.
“Have I ever given you a reason not to trust me?”
CLICK.
The sound came from downstairs.
The front door.
Vanessa froze.
Her smile vanished so quickly it looked as though someone had erased it.
Her pupils snapped toward the bedroom entrance.
Marcus sat upright.
“What was that?”
Then Daniel’s voice carried through the mansion.
“Vanessa?”
Marcus’s complexion changed.
“Why is he home?”
Vanessa was already moving.
“Bathroom.”
“What?”
“Go.”
Marcus jumped from the side of the bed farthest from the bedroom entrance.
Vanessa checked the hall.
Empty.
Daniel was still downstairs.
Marcus crossed the bedroom quickly but naturally, reached the en-suite bathroom, stepped fully inside, then gently pulled the door closed.
Click.
Completely shut.
Inside, Marcus pressed his shoulder against the wall beside the door.
His breathing shortened.
A sheen of sweat appeared at his temple.
His eyes locked on the handle.
Outside, Vanessa straightened her dress.
Smoothed the bed.
Moved Marcus’s glass behind a lamp.
Ran both hands through her hair.
One breath.
Then another.
She deliberately lowered her shoulders.
Daniel entered.
Work clothes.
Tie loosened.
Leather bag in one hand.
Vanessa smiled.
“You’re home early.”
Daniel studied her for a second.
“Meeting ended.”
“Good surprise?”
“Depends.”
She stepped toward him.
“Why don’t we go out tonight?”
“For dinner?”
“Somewhere nice.”
Daniel set his bag beside the dresser.
“Sure.”
Vanessa’s shoulders lowered another fraction.
Then Daniel removed his watch.
“Let me shower first.”
He looked toward the bathroom.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
Only for an instant.
“You’re… showering now?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yeah.”
He started walking.
Inside the bathroom, Marcus heard each step.
Closer.
Closer.
He stared at the handle.
Didn’t blink.
Didn’t breathe.
Daniel reached the door.
His hand began to rise.
Then his phone rang.
He stopped.
Vanessa nearly collapsed from relief.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Damn.”
He answered.
“Daniel.”
Pause.
“No. Don’t approve anything until I see it.”
Another pause.
“What transfer?”
Vanessa’s attention sharpened.
Daniel turned away from the bathroom.
“How much?”
Marcus remained frozen inside.
Daniel walked toward the bedroom window.
“Who authorized it?”
Vanessa watched his back.
Her relief disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
Daniel listened.
Then:
“No. I did not approve a four-point-eight-million-dollar transfer.”
Vanessa went still.
Daniel glanced at her.
She immediately softened her expression.
“Everything okay?”
He covered the phone.
“Company issue.”
Then resumed.
“Freeze it.”
A pause.
“And send me the authorization packet.”
Vanessa’s fingers curled.
Marcus heard nothing clearly through the door except Daniel’s voice.
But he could tell from the tone that something had gone wrong.
Daniel ended the call.
“Dinner may have to wait.”
Vanessa smiled carefully.
“Work?”
“Apparently someone tried to move almost five million dollars out of one of our holding accounts.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Hackers?”
“Maybe.”
Daniel looked toward his work bag.
“Or someone internally used my credentials.”
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“You’re always saying your systems are too secure for that.”
“I am.”
That was the problem.
Daniel walked to the dresser.
Opened his laptop.
Vanessa glanced at the bathroom.
Once.
Too quickly for most people to notice.
Daniel noticed.
He said nothing.
“I’ll work downstairs.”
Her heart lifted.
“Okay.”
Daniel picked up his laptop and bag.
At the doorway, he paused.
“Vanessa?”
“Yes?”
“Were you using my bathroom?”
Her pulse stopped.
“What?”
“The floor.”
She stared.
Daniel nodded toward the closed door.
“There was water outside it when I came in.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“I washed my hands.”
“In there?”
“My bathroom too, isn’t it?”
Daniel studied her.
“Of course.”
Then he left.
Vanessa waited.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Thirty.
She crossed to the hall.
Listened.
Daniel’s footsteps moved downstairs.
She returned and opened the bathroom.
Marcus looked ready to collapse.
“What the hell was that?”
“Quiet.”
“He almost opened the door.”
“I know.”
“And what transfer was he talking about?”
Vanessa looked at him.
Marcus’s fear shifted.
“You said those accounts wouldn’t be checked until next month.”
“They weren’t supposed to be.”
“Vanessa.”
“Keep your voice down.”
“How do I get out?”
She looked toward the hall.
There was a service staircase near the far end of the second floor, used mostly by housekeeping.
She waited until Daniel’s voice carried from his downstairs office.
Then moved.
Marcus followed.
Shoes in his hand.
They reached the stairs.
Before he descended, Marcus caught her wrist.
“If Daniel found the transfer, this changes everything.”
“No.”
“It does.”
Vanessa’s gaze became cold.
“It changes the timeline.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we stop waiting.”
Marcus stared.
“For the house?”
“For all of it.”
He hesitated.
“Vanessa, maybe we should stop.”
Her expression sharpened.
“After everything we’ve already done?”
That sentence frightened him more than Daniel almost opening the bathroom door.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You wanted me to leave him.”
“I still do.”
“Then trust me.”
Marcus looked toward the lower floor.
“Fine.”
He disappeared down the service stairs.
Vanessa returned to the bedroom.
She remade the bed.
Washed both glasses.
Opened the bathroom door and let the steam from the shower run for several minutes.
Then she stared at herself in the mirror.
Calm again.
Downstairs, Daniel opened the transfer authorization packet.
His own electronic signature appeared on page seven.
The recipient was a company called Calder Ridge Holdings.
Daniel had never heard of it.
But one thing immediately caught his attention.
The mailing address attached to the company was only four blocks from Marcus’s apartment.
Daniel didn’t know that yet.
What he did know was simpler.
May you like
Someone had used his name to move millions.
And whoever had done it had expected him not to come home early enough to notice.
