Chapter 5 - What Vanessa Was Really Supposed to DoVanessa asked to speak with prosecutors the following morning.

Her lawyer sat beside her.
Daniel was not allowed in the room.
He did not want to be.
Detective Ortiz later summarized what could legally be shared.
Vanessa admitted the financial scheme.
Not all of it.
Enough.
Julian had approached her eleven months earlier.
Hale Development’s pension investments were collapsing.
He needed capital before the audit.
Vanessa had debts of her own.
Not seven figures.
But enough to terrify her.
She had secretly invested nearly $900,000 in a luxury wellness business with two friends.
The company failed.
Most of the money came from loans Daniel did not know existed.
“If Daniel found out,” Vanessa told investigators, “I thought he would leave me.”
Ortiz asked:
“So you agreed to steal ten million dollars?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Not at first.”
At first, Julian proposed an investment.
North Harbor would buy part of the lake acreage.
Vanessa would persuade Daniel.
Margaret would resist.
Everyone knew it.
Margaret considered the shoreline sacred family property.
Thomas Hale had made her trustee partly because she would not sell emotionally important assets during temporary business pressure.
Vanessa told Julian:
“She’ll never sign.”
Julian answered:
“Then make Daniel believe she shouldn’t be making decisions.”
The campaign began quietly.
Vanessa mentioned Margaret forgetting appointments.
Misplacing keys.
Repeating stories.
All normal things.
Daniel listened.
Sometimes agreed.
Then Vanessa suggested Margaret should have a medical evaluation.
Daniel refused.
“She’s fine.”
That stopped the plan temporarily.
Then Julian forged documents.
Daniel’s signature.
Margaret’s.
Vanessa was supposed to get Margaret to sign a separate trustee resignation.
Not incompetency at first.
A temporary resignation “for estate simplification.”
Margaret refused.
Then she found the sale agreement.
Everything accelerated.
“What happened at the lake?” Ortiz asked.
Vanessa’s attorney shifted.
Vanessa answered anyway.
“I asked her to sign.”
“While she was chained to a rock?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why the chain?”
“To scare her.”
“Whose idea?”
“Mine.”
Daniel felt cold hearing that later.
Not Julian.
Not coercion.
Vanessa.
“She kept saying she would tell Daniel.”
“What did you say?”
“That she was ruining his life.”
“Did you intend to kill her when you brought her outside?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why put a heavy rock beside the water?”
Silence.
Vanessa cried.
“I wanted her to think I might.”
Ortiz did not soften.
“And then?”
“She said she had copies.”
“What did that change?”
“Everything.”
“If copies existed, killing her would not destroy them.”
“I wasn’t thinking.”
“Were you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Did Julian tell you to push the rock?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you to hurt her?”
“No.”
“What did ‘fix it’ mean?”
“Get the documents. Get the signature. Stop her from calling Daniel.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Ortiz waited.
Vanessa finally said:
“He didn’t tell me to kill Margaret.”
That distinction mattered.
Daniel hated that it mattered.
But truth mattered even when it prevented him from placing every ounce of guilt on one person.
Julian knew Vanessa was coercing Margaret.
He knew about the chain?
Vanessa said no.
He expected intimidation.
Vanessa escalated.
She pushed the rock herself.
Her decision.
Her crime.
The message Is it done? referred to the resignation and the document recovery.
Not the drowning.
But Julian still participated in fraud, forgery, coercion, and obstruction.
He simply had not ordered murder.
Margaret listened to the summary from her hospital bed.
Then asked:
“Why tell the truth now?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because she wants a deal.”
Margaret nodded.
“Exactly.”
She was not impressed by Vanessa’s partial honesty.
Then Ortiz revealed something else.
Vanessa claimed she had tried to stop the sale three weeks ago.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
She sent Julian:
We can’t do this.
Julian:
We already did.
Vanessa:
I’ll pay my debt another way.
Julian:
Then explain the forged transfers to Daniel.
Daniel frowned.
“What forged transfers?”
Ortiz hesitated.
“Vanessa used company money.”
“How much?”
“Approximately $310,000.”
“For what?”
“Her failed investment.”
Daniel sat down.
So Vanessa’s hidden debt had already become theft.
Julian knew.
He helped disguise it as foundation expenses.
That gave him leverage.
If she withdrew from the larger plan, he could expose her.
Vanessa wrote in one message:
You said nobody would get hurt.
Julian answered:
Nobody is getting hurt. Margaret signs. We close. Pension is fixed. Everyone moves on.
That was how Julian justified it.
Steal ten million.
Forge signatures.
Coerce an elderly woman.
But pension retirees kept their money.
Vanessa covered her debt.
Julian filled the hole.
Samuel Pike got lakefront development rights.
Everyone moves on.
Except Margaret.
Except Daniel.
Except the truth.
Daniel asked Ortiz:
“Where is Julian?”
“No confirmed location.”
His car had been found at a commuter lot.
His passport remained at home.
No flights under his name.
He was hiding domestically.
Then Margaret remembered something.
“Julian has a cabin.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Where?”
“Your father took him there once.”
“What cabin?”
“Adirondacks.”
Daniel had never heard of it.
Margaret frowned.
“Thomas hated the place.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian bought it with money Thomas loaned him.”
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
Daniel felt another old family story opening.
Margaret continued:
“Julian never repaid him.”
Daniel almost laughed.
His father had trusted Julian too.
Maybe this did not begin with Vanessa.
Maybe the pattern was much older.
Ortiz asked for the location.
Margaret gave the name of the lake.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You remember that but Vanessa wanted me to think you were losing your mind.”
Margaret gave him a tired smile.
“I also know where my glasses are.”
He almost laughed.
Then Ortiz’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Daniel stood.
Ortiz ended the call.
“Officers found the cabin.”
“And Julian?”
“No.”
“What did they find?”
“Burned financial records.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Anything else?”
Ortiz looked directly at Margaret.
“A photograph of you.”
Margaret went still.
“Taken yesterday morning.”
“Where?”
“Outside Eleanor Blake’s law office.”
May you like
Daniel stared.
Someone had been following his mother before Vanessa ever took her to the lake.
