Chapter 16 - Cordelia Was Not Allowed to Hide Behind NathanCordelia’s counsel wanted her cooperation framed as coercion.

Nathan manipulated her.
Nathan endangered her retirement.
Nathan controlled legal language.
All true.
Malcolm objected to one thing.
“Do not describe her as helpless.”
Cordelia heard through her attorney and agreed.
She amended her statement.
Nathan influenced me. He did not force me to photograph Arthur’s signature.
He did not force me to mislead Vivian.
He did not force me to build Harrison’s file.
He did not force me to restrain Harrison.
The last sentence mattered.
Harrison read only an age-appropriate version with Dr. Mira Patel, his therapist.
“Why did she say that?”
“So everyone knows which choices were hers.”
“Did Nathan make the list?”
“Yes.”
“Did he make her copy it?”
“We don’t know.”
Cordelia later answered.
No.
She copied it because she wanted to track progress.
The word progress made Harrison angry.
“Progress was crossing Grandpa out?”
“In their plan.”
“That’s sick.”
“Yes.”
Then Harrison asked to speak to Cordelia.
Malcolm’s instinct was no.
Dr. Patel asked why.
“Because she hurt him.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I don’t trust her.”
“You don’t need to.”
That was not the question.
Did Harrison need answers?
He thought he did.
A supervised meeting was arranged months later.
Cordelia entered without makeup.
Harrison stared.
“You look different.”
“I don’t work at your house anymore.”
“So?”
“My uniform made me feel different.”
Interesting.
Harrison went straight to it.
“Why did you try to make me take those pills?”
Cordelia’s face collapsed.
“Because I panicked.”
“That’s not why.”
She nodded.
“You’re right.”
Then:
“I wanted you quiet.”
Malcolm felt his hands tighten behind the observation glass.
Cordelia continued.
“I wanted time to call Nathan.”
“You thought pills make people quiet?”
Harrison asked.
Cordelia looked ashamed.
“I told myself you would calm down.”
“Did Dad say I could take them?”
“No.”
“Doctor?”
“No.”
“Then you knew.”
“Yes.”
No procedural detail.
No excuse.
Harrison’s eyes filled.
“Did you want me sick?”
“No.”
“Did you care if I was scared?”
Cordelia cried.
“Not enough in that moment.”
Good answer.
Then:
“Why pretend you forgot?”
“Because Nathan and I had discussed using memory problems as an explanation if I was caught with documents.”
“You practiced lying?”
“Yes.”
Harrison looked disgusted.
Then:
“Did you hate Grandpa?”
“No.”
“Did you hate Dad?”
“Sometimes.”
Malcolm flinched.
Harrison almost smiled.
“Why?”
“Because he trusted me with everything until something mattered.”
Cordelia looked toward the one-way glass as if she knew Malcolm stood there.
“He let me carry work without giving me family authority.”
Harrison frowned.
“That sounds normal.”
Cordelia laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
“Did you hate me?”
“No.”
“Did you like me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why make a file?”
Cordelia took time.
“Because you became part of a problem I wanted solved.”
Harrison’s face hardened.
“That’s not liking me.”
“No.”
Cordelia accepted it.
“I cared about you when caring was easy.”
Silence.
“When your questions threatened what I wanted, I chose what I wanted.”
That was the truest thing she said.
Harrison looked down.
“Do you want me to forgive you?”
Cordelia’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Malcolm tensed.
Then she continued:
“But wanting it doesn’t mean I get it.”
Harrison nodded.
“I don’t.”
Cordelia closed her eyes.
“Okay.”
Meeting ended.
No hug.
No dramatic forgiveness.
Outside, Harrison said:
“She really did care about me.”
Malcolm looked surprised.
“How do you know?”
“Because it would be easier if she didn’t.”
That was perceptive.
Then:
“I still don’t forgive her.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Maybe when I’m forty.”
Malcolm smiled.
“Your schedule.”
Then Harrison asked:
“Do you forgive yourself?”
Malcolm stopped.
“For what?”
“Not listening.”
Harder than Cordelia.
“I’m working on it.”
Harrison rolled his eyes.
“Adult answer.”
“Yes.”
But Malcolm knew Chapter 16’s real question had shifted.
Cordelia was taking responsibility.
Nathan was facing consequences.
Arthur’s wishes were clearer.
