Chapter 8 - The Blue Ledger Wasn’t Blue AnymoreGriffin found the copy.

Not Vincent.

Not the police.

An eleven-year-old.

He was sitting on Elena’s bedroom floor while investigators cataloged her desk.

Nobody had excluded him from the room, but Vincent tried not to involve him.

Griffin picked up an old cookbook from the bottom shelf.

“Mom hated cooking.”

Vincent almost smiled.

“She did.”

“Why did she have this?”

The book was enormous.

THE COMPLETE AMERICAN HOME KITCHEN

A wedding gift.

Elena had joked for years that it was the most threatening object she owned.

Griffin flipped it open.

Several folded sheets fell out.

Blue carbon-copy paper.

Vincent stopped breathing.

The pages were duplicates from Everett’s handwritten ledger.

Not the whole notebook.

Enough.

Property name.

Date.

Approved expense.

Actual amount.

Vendor.

Notes.

Elena had copied sixteen pages.

She must have hidden them in the cookbook because nobody opened it.

Loretta certainly wouldn’t.

The numbers matched Marianne Cole’s audit.

Then one entry changed the investigation.

Bellamy Legal Reserve — $1,250,000 — NOT APPROVED.

Everett had written beside it:

Grant says escrow. No file. Ask Elena.

Another:

North Vale — $600,000 — Loretta says property acquisition. Which property?

Then:

Briar Hill — $410,000 — STOP ALL PAYMENTS.

Date:

Eight months ago.

Before Elena died.

Everett already suspected.

Elena’s recording had not triggered the investigation.

It confirmed his own.

Then Griffin pointed at the final page.

“Dad.”

A handwritten note in Elena’s writing:

If anything happens to Everett before this is resolved, check the lake-house insurance trust. Grant changed beneficiary paperwork in May.

Vincent frowned.

“What lake-house insurance trust?”

He had never heard of it.

Eleanor? No, family attorney in previous story. Here we need perhaps Everett's new independent lawyer "Rebecca Sloan". Let's introduce. Everett had quietly hired attorney Miriam Wade after becoming suspicious of Grant. She knew.

The trust was not life insurance.

It insured the lake property and several commercial buildings through a captive insurance arrangement.

Approximately $9 million sat in reserves.

Beneficiary on dissolution was supposed to be Mercer Family Holdings.

Grant had changed it.

New beneficiary:

Mercer Continuity Foundation.

The same foundation in the draft will.

But the foundation did not yet legally exist.

Caleb Moore stared at the documents.

“They were preparing a destination.”

“For what?”

“If they dissolved the captive insurer or moved reserve assets after gaining control, money could flow into the foundation.”

“Controlled by Loretta.”

“Yes.”

Potentially nine million.

Add the stolen six.

Add Loretta’s inheritance if old will remained.

The scheme involved far more than Vincent first thought.

But the biggest shock came from incorporation records.

Mercer Continuity Foundation had been formed ten months earlier.

Not recently.

Ten months.

Before Elena died.

Director:

Grant Bellamy.

Secretary:

Parker Bellamy.

No Loretta on public filings.

Vincent stared.

“Then why does the new will make Loretta president?”

Moore answered:

“Because the foundation existed before she was formally added.”

“Did she know?”

“We don’t know.”

Vincent thought of Elena confronting Loretta.

At that time, Loretta seemed desperate to hide approximately one million dollars.

What if Grant was already building something larger without her?

The possibility mattered.

Not to excuse Loretta’s later crimes.

To understand roles.

Investigators subpoenaed foundation bank records.

Only $50,000 sat there.

Seed money.

Transferred from Bellamy Legal Reserve.

Grant had built the vehicle.

Loretta’s theft may have given him access and leverage.

Vincent remembered something Elena said in the recording.

“Does Grant know?”

Loretta:

“He helped structure expenses.”

Maybe Loretta brought Grant into her theft.

Or Grant saw opportunity.

Either way, the scheme grew beyond her.

Then the missing blue ledger appeared.

Not physically.

A photograph.

Grant had scanned it.

Investigators found partial images in a deleted cloud backup tied to his office.

Why would he copy evidence against himself?

Because he needed to know what Everett knew.

The scans showed later pages Elena had never copied.

Everett’s notes became increasingly alarmed.

Grant refuses records.

Loretta says mistake.

Parker? Why paid?

Then:

CHANGE WILL. INDEPENDENT TRUSTEE. AUDIT EVERYTHING.

And finally:

Talk to Vincent after Elena funeral. Not now.

Vincent stopped.

Everett had planned to tell him.

Then Elena died.

Everett delayed because his son was grieving.

Another compassionate silence.

Then Everett’s stroke.

The truth kept getting postponed by tragedy.

Loretta used the gap.

Vincent visited his father that evening.

He showed him the copied pages.

Everett touched Elena’s handwriting.

His eyes filled.

“Elena.”

“She knew.”

Everett nodded.

“Why didn’t you tell me after she died?”

Everett struggled.

“Broken.”

Vincent understood.

“You thought I was broken.”

Nod.

“You were protecting me.”

Everett looked ashamed.

Vincent sat back.

“Dad.”

Everett looked at him.

“Stop protecting me with silence.”

His father closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

The sentence applied to everyone.

Elena delayed telling Vincent because she expected him to defend Loretta.

Everett delayed because Vincent was grieving.

Griffin delayed because Loretta said his father had enough problems.

People kept deciding Vincent could not handle truth.

Sometimes Vincent had taught them to.

He looked at his father.

“Is there anything else?”

Everett hesitated.

Then wrote:

GRANT BIGGER

Vincent frowned.

“Bigger than Loretta?”

Everett nodded.

“How much?”

His father wrote:

DON’T KNOW

Then:

ELENA THOUGHT 10+

Ten million.

Vincent felt cold.

Loretta may have stolen millions.

Grant may have stolen far more.

And the new will did not merely make Loretta rich.

It placed the entire Mercer estate into a foundation Grant had created before she ever became its public president.

May you like

Maybe Loretta thought she was taking control.

Maybe Grant intended to control her.
