Chapter 8 - The Letter Roxanne Had Been Searching ForArthur sent the envelope by bonded courier.

Dashiell waited six hours.
They felt like six days.
In the meantime, he did something harder.
He told Maisy she would not be returning to the house while Roxanne was there.
Maisy looked relieved.
Then guilty.
“Is Aunt Roxanne mad?”
“Probably.”
“Because of me?”
“No.”
Dashiell sat beside her.
“Listen carefully.”
Maisy looked up.
“When adults make bad choices, children do not cause those choices.”
She nodded slowly.
“Even if I spill stuff?”
“Even if you spill an entire swimming pool.”
Maisy smiled faintly.
“That’s a lot.”
“Yes.”
“Would you be mad?”
“I would ask why there was a swimming pool in the living room.”
She laughed.
Dashiell held onto that sound.
The investigator arranged counseling.
Dashiell agreed.
No hesitation.
He also called Kiara into the kitchen.
“You’re not fired.”
She blinked.
“I assumed.”
“You’re getting a raise.”
“Sir—”
“And paid time off if you need it.”
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t owe me.”
“I know.”
That surprised her.
Dashiell continued.
“I’m not paying you because you saved my daughter.”
“But—”
“You did.”
He took a breath.
“But I don’t want you thinking money is payment for doing something human.”
Kiara looked down.
“I should have told you sooner.”
“Yes.”
She flinched.
Dashiell continued:
“And I should have noticed sooner.”
They sat with that.
No one absolved anyone.
That felt more honest.
The courier arrived at 4:20.
Dashiell signed.
Naomi came immediately.
The envelope was yellowed.
Elowen’s handwriting.
Dashiell opened it.
Four pages.
The first was addressed:
Dash,
No one except Elowen called him that.
His eyes blurred.
If you are reading this, then something I hoped would stay buried has become dangerous again.
She explained everything she had discovered.
Roxanne’s unauthorized access to fertility records.
Calder’s fear over the estate.
The false anonymous package.
Then something new.
Roxanne had not acted only for Calder.
She had her own financial interest.
Everett Holloway had once loaned Roxanne $180,000 for a failed medical staffing company.
The loan remained unpaid.
After Everett died, it became an estate asset.
Calder secretly agreed not to pursue collection.
In exchange, Roxanne helped him investigate whether Maisy’s birth could be challenged.
Dashiell stared.
A deal.
Not merely family gossip.
Money.
Elowen found evidence of it after accidentally seeing emails on Calder’s laptop during a family trip.
She photographed them.
I confronted Calder. He admitted the agreement but said he never intended to actually challenge Maisy. He only wanted leverage in case your ownership increased.
Dashiell laughed bitterly.
Leverage.
Adults always found respectable words.
Elowen continued.
Roxanne did not stop. I believe she submitted the altered fertility records herself.
Then:
Calder eventually told her to back off. That is why they hate each other now. But Calder refused to tell you because he feared losing you and losing the company.
Dashiell stopped.
Calder had not been helping Roxanne all these years.
Their alliance had fractured.
Then why was he helping now?
Next paragraph.
If I die before this is resolved, there is one thing I need you to know. Roxanne knows I copied the emails. She does not know where I hid them.
Dashiell’s heartbeat accelerated.
There.
The evidence Roxanne was searching for.
Elowen wrote:
I placed the originals somewhere connected to the only person I believed Roxanne would never search: Maisy.
Naomi looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Dashiell kept reading.
Her first-year memory book. Inside the back cover.
Dashiell stood.
The baby book.
Blue linen.
Clouds on the cover.
Where was it?
He remembered seeing it after Elowen died.
Roxanne had helped organize keepsakes.
Had she found it?
His phone rang.
Home security.
Motion.
Dashiell opened the surviving hallway feed.
Roxanne came out of Maisy’s bedroom.
Holding something blue.
“No.”
Dashiell grabbed his keys.
Naomi stood.
“Call police.”
“She found it.”
“Then don’t race home alone.”
Dashiell was already moving.
The camera showed Roxanne opening the baby book in the hallway.
Flipping pages.
First haircut.
First Christmas.
Hospital bracelet.
Then she reached the back cover.
Her expression changed.
She tore at the lining.
Nothing.
She looked confused.
Dashiell stopped.
Nothing?
Elowen’s letter said the emails were there.
Roxanne searched again.
Empty.
Then Calder walked into frame.
Roxanne shouted:
“You took them.”
Calder stared.
“What?”
“They’re gone.”
Calder’s face changed.
Roxanne stepped toward him.
“You took Elowen’s copies.”
Calder said something that made Dashiell stop running.
“No.”
He looked directly toward the hallway camera.
As though he knew Dashiell might eventually see.
“Dashiell did.”
Roxanne froze.
Calder continued:
“Eight years ago.”
Dashiell stared at the screen.
He had?
He remembered nothing.
May you like
Then Calder said:
“He just doesn’t know it yet.”
