Chapter 16 - The Banker Who Needed Margaret DeadGregory Walsh had worked at First Northern for nineteen years.

No criminal record.

Married.

Two children.

Respected.

Also deeply in debt.

Gambling.

Private loans.

Tax liens hidden through shell companies.

Vanessa found him two years earlier through a luxury property deal.

Then she found his weakness.

Sheriff Cole obtained financial records.

Payments from Vanessa-controlled companies to Gregory.

Total:

$312,000.

The two-million-dollar mortgage was not a clever forgery.

It was coordinated fraud.

Gregory approved documents he knew were false.

He helped create the authorization Vanessa used to access Henry's safety deposit box.

He knew Margaret would discover the fraud once the conservation trust transfer happened.

And according to Samuel, Gregory was with Vanessa days before the attempted drowning.

Daniel sat across from Cole.

“So he knew the plan.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel gave him a look.

“Fine. Likely.”

“Is he arrested?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because we're trying to determine whether he participated in attempted murder or only financial crimes.”

Daniel stood.

“He helped her access the box after she tried to kill Mom.”

“Yes.”

“That means he knew.”

“Not necessarily.”

Daniel paced.

“Vanessa leaves Mom in the lake. Drives to the bank. Gregory lets her into the box using forged authorization.”

Cole nodded.

“Strong evidence.”

“Then arrest him.”

“We're building the case.”

Daniel hated process.

But process was what his family had avoided for decades.

Cover-ups happened when people replaced law with private judgment.

So he waited.

Gregory ran.

That answered several questions.

His SUV was found at Milwaukee airport.

No sign he boarded a commercial flight.

Then Thomas called Daniel.

“Someone broke into my house.”

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“What was taken?”

“One thing.”

“What?”

“Henry's letters.”

Of course.

Gregory was collecting evidence.

Or destroying it.

Then Margaret called.

Her voice shook.

“Daniel, there's someone outside.”

He stood.

“Where are you?”

“At Kate's.”

Daniel froze.

Kate was Daniel's cousin who had agreed to let Margaret stay temporarily.

“Lock every door.”

“I did.”

“Police are coming.”

Daniel called Cole while driving.

A gray SUV pulled away from Kate's street before deputies arrived.

Camera footage captured the driver.

Gregory.

Now there was no question.

He wasn't simply hiding.

He was cleaning the trail.

Police found him that night at a motel.

In his room:

Cash.

Fake identification.

Thomas's stolen letters.

And a printed map of the Hale lake house.

One location circled.

The dock.

Daniel stared.

“What was he planning?”

Cole looked grim.

“Maybe retrieving something.”

“From the water?”

They searched the lake.

Divers found the rock Vanessa used.

Chain attached.

Nothing else.

Then one diver found a waterproof bag wedged beneath a support beam.

Daniel stared as police opened it.

Documents.

Copies of the forged mortgage.

Burner phones.

Cash.

And a handwritten plan.

Vanessa's handwriting.

M arrives 8:00.

Papers first.

If no signature:

Dock.

Car to trail.

G handles bank.

D not expected until 6.

Daniel felt physically sick.

There it was.

A murder plan.

Written.

Clear.

No ambiguity.

Vanessa had planned each step.

Gregory's role:

Handle bank.

Remove loan file.

Prepare alternate timeline.

Alternate timeline?

Cole flipped pages.

Daniel's name appeared.

D confronts M re trust.

Potential financial motive.

Loan documents establish D debt.

Daniel stared.

“They were framing me.”

“Yes.”

Not merely as fraudster.

Potentially as murderer.

If Margaret vanished and Daniel's forged loan surfaced, Gregory could manufacture records showing Daniel had motive.

Vanessa could claim she feared her brother.

The plan continued.

V reports M missing 11 a.m. next day.

G anonymous tip re D financial stress.

Daniel sat down.

His sister intended to destroy him after killing their mother.

Not because Daniel caught her.

Before that.

It was always part of the plan.

Cole watched him.

“You okay?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“No.”

Then he noticed one final note.

After estate clears:

Sell parcel through G.

Leave US.

Daniel looked up.

“She was going to run.”

“With Gregory, maybe.”

Daniel stared at the documents.

Then a deputy entered.

“Sheriff.”

“What?”

“Walsh is asking for a deal.”

Cole raised an eyebrow.

“For what?”

“He says Vanessa confessed something bigger.”

Daniel felt dread.

“What?”

The deputy looked at him.

“Henry Hale.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Gregory claimed Vanessa had admitted changing her father's medication.

The suspected murder of Henry was no longer theory.

Vanessa may have killed her own father eleven years earlier.

And if Gregory was telling the truth, the lake had never been the beginning.

It was only the latest place Vanessa tried to bury someone who stood in her way.
