Chapter 18 - The CabinThe gunshot had not hit anyone.

Vanessa fired into the ceiling.

Peter surrendered near the shoreline.

Vanessa barricaded herself inside.

Sophie was safe in an ambulance.

Daniel climbed inside and pulled her against him.

“I'm sorry.”

She cried into his chest.

“I knew you'd come.”

“Always.”

“She said you wouldn't.”

“She was wrong.”

Sophie looked at him.

“Peter was scared of her.”

Daniel wiped her tears.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did she?”

Sophie shook her head.

Then hesitated.

“She kept asking about Mom's secret.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That Mom had more.”

Daniel froze.

“More what?”

“Stars.”

Of course.

Megan had taught Sophie a system.

Not one secret.

Several.

A child couldn't be forced to reveal what she didn't fully understand.

“Did Mom tell you how many?”

Sophie held up three fingers.

Daniel had found two.

There was a third.

“Where?”

Sophie looked toward the cabin.

Daniel's blood chilled.

“In there?”

“No.”

She pointed to herself.

“Mom said the last star stays with me.”

Daniel frowned.

Then Sophie reached beneath her sweater.

Around her neck was a thin chain.

Daniel had never noticed it before.

At the bottom hung a tiny metal star.

She opened it.

Inside was a microSD card.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Mom gave you this?”

“The day before she died.”

Daniel stared.

Megan had placed the final evidence where Vanessa wouldn't think to look.

With Sophie.

“I kept it hidden.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“You did good.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I forgot until Vanessa started talking about stars.”

Daniel hugged her.

Detective Ruiz appeared.

“We need the card.”

Daniel handed it over.

“What about Vanessa?”

“Still inside.”

“Will she surrender?”

Ruiz looked toward the cabin.

“I don't know.”

Peter was already talking.

Fear made him cooperative.

He admitted driving.

Admitted helping Vanessa retrieve Sophie.

Claimed he believed Vanessa only wanted the flash drive.

Daniel didn't believe half of it.

But Peter gave investigators the final mechanical link.

Three years earlier, Vanessa had paid a mechanic named Curtis Bell twelve thousand dollars in cash.

Bell had recently died.

But Peter had created the payment through one of Vanessa's shell companies.

“What did Bell do?” Daniel asked.

Ruiz answered carefully.

“Peter says Vanessa told him Bell altered Megan's brake fitting.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was.

The final piece.

Murder.

Not accident.

Not bad luck.

Not Megan driving too fast.

Vanessa had sent her onto that road knowing exactly what could happen.

Ruiz's radio crackled.

Vanessa wanted to talk.

Not to negotiators.

To Daniel.

Ruiz refused at first.

Then Vanessa threatened to kill herself.

Daniel took the phone.

“I'm here.”

Vanessa's voice sounded distant.

“You tricked me.”

“You kidnapped Sophie.”

“I let her go.”

“Yes.”

“Does that matter?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“It matters to Sophie.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Do you hate me?”

Daniel thought about the question.

“No.”

Vanessa went silent.

“I don't have enough left for hate.”

“That is worse.”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

For once Daniel believed it.

“I loved you.”

“No.”

“Don't tell me what I felt.”

“You loved the idea of owning my attention.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly now.”

Vanessa's breathing shook.

“Megan laughed at me.”

“When?”

“College.”

Daniel frowned.

“She knew how I felt about you.”

“And?”

“She told me you were going to propose.”

Daniel remembered.

The night behind the library.

Megan crying.

Daniel holding the ring.

“Yes.”

“She looked so happy.”

Vanessa's voice hardened.

“She had everything.”

“She had a life.”

“She had my life.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice became firm.

“She had hers.”

Silence.

“And Sophie has hers.”

Another silence.

“You don't get to take either one.”

Vanessa whispered:

“I didn't mean for Megan to die.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You sabotaged her brakes.”

“I wanted her scared.”

“You sent her into a storm.”

“I wanted her to turn around.”

“You wrote ‘done’ after she crashed.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

Daniel felt nothing.

“Come outside.”

“I can't.”

“Yes, you can.”

“They'll put me away forever.”

“Probably.”

“Daniel.”

“You asked Sophie why she would do that to herself.”

Vanessa went silent.

“You stood over a crying nine-year-old and blamed her for what you did.”

Daniel looked toward the cabin.

“That's who you are when nobody is watching.”

The line remained silent.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa stepped outside.

Hands raised.

For the first time since Daniel had known her, she looked small.

Police moved in.

She didn't resist.

As they placed her in handcuffs, Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

Then toward Sophie.

Sophie didn't hide.

She stood beside her father.

Short hair.

Tear-streaked face.

Alive.

Vanessa stared at her for several seconds.

Sophie said nothing.

She didn't have to.

May you like

Vanessa had tried to make her ugly because she looked like Megan.

Instead, she had turned Sophie into the person who finally exposed her.
