Chapter 12 - WHY VANESSA WANTED SOPHIE GONE BEFORE WEDNESDAYVanessa was arrested the next morning.

Not for attempted murder.
Not yet.
For evidence tampering, unlawful access, and offenses related to Sophie.
Richard Hale was questioned in Arizona.
His attorney immediately denied everything.
Then detectives showed him the messages about moving Sophie.
His story changed.
Richard claimed Vanessa had asked whether Sophie could stay with him "temporarily."
He insisted he didn't know about the suitcase.
Ethan didn't believe him.
Police didn't seem convinced either.
The investigation expanded.
Ethan should have felt relief.
Instead, one question bothered him.
Why move Sophie?
If Vanessa knew Ethan wouldn't return until Wednesday, why take Sophie to Arizona Monday afternoon?
Why not simply delete the photographs?
Police asked the same question.
Then forensic technicians recovered more from Vanessa's second phone.
A message from Richard:
Grace asked about Sophie again. If the child sees her, memory may accelerate.
Ethan stared.
Doctors confirmed familiar emotional stimuli could sometimes trigger memory.
Richard knew.
Vanessa knew.
Sophie wasn't simply an inconvenience.
She was a threat to their control of Grace's memory.
Another message:
V: Sophie already suspects.
R: Then keep them separated until we know what Grace remembers.
V: Ethan will never let me take her without a reason.
R: He isn't home.
Ethan's stomach turned.
Vanessa planned to move Sophie before Ethan returned.
Maybe she intended to tell him afterward that Sophie had run away.
Maybe a family emergency.
Maybe anything.
"What was in the suitcase?" a detective asked.
Clothes.
Documents.
Cash.
A child's passport.
Sophie's passport.
Ethan felt cold.
Vanessa had removed it from the safe.
Alongside two airline tickets.
Los Angeles to Phoenix.
Flight departure Monday evening.
That explained the suitcase.
Vanessa never intended Sophie to travel inside it.
The suitcase assault had been punishment when Sophie refused to leave and hid the phone.
Vanessa had been packing.
Sophie discovered Grace's photograph.
Vanessa panicked.
When Sophie threatened to tell Ethan, Vanessa used the open suitcase to terrify her into silence.
A monstrous act.
But suddenly the entire opening made sense.
Ethan knelt beside Sophie that afternoon.
She was drawing a picture for Grace.
Two women.
One girl.
A house.
He hated the question he needed to ask.
"Sweetheart, did Vanessa tell you where you were going?"
Sophie shook her head.
"She said Arizona."
Ethan's heart tightened.
"Did you want to go?"
"No."
"What did she say?"
"She said Grandpa Richard was sick."
Ethan stared.
"Did she say we'd talked about it?"
"She said you knew."
Of course.
Then Sophie remembered something.
"She said Mommy might try to steal me."
Ethan felt sick.
"What?"
"She said if I saw Mommy, I shouldn't go with her."
"Why?"
"Because Mommy was dangerous."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Vanessa had been preparing Sophie to reject Grace.
If a reunion became unavoidable, Sophie had already been poisoned against her mother.
"Do you think Mommy is dangerous?"
Sophie looked offended.
"No."
"You haven't seen her in a long time."
"I know."
"She might be different."
Sophie thought.
"Are you different?"
Ethan blinked.
"From when I was little?"
"Probably."
"You're still Daddy."
Ethan almost cried.
Children simplified truths adults complicated.
That evening, Dr. Levin called.
Grace wanted to see Sophie.
Ethan asked:
"Are you ready?"
Grace laughed nervously.
"No."
"Neither am I."
"Does that mean we wait forever?"
"No."
They arranged a carefully supervised meeting for Saturday.
Three days.
Sophie began counting hours.
Then on Friday night, Ethan received a call from police.
Richard Hale had disappeared.
His car was found outside Phoenix Sky Harbor.
No record of boarding a commercial flight.
His phone was off.
The same night, someone tried accessing Grace's Bellora medical portal remotely.
The login originated from a network near Santa Barbara.
Ethan immediately called Bellora.
Security increased.
Grace moved to another room.
Police were notified.
Then Dr. Levin called back.
"We have another issue."
"What?"
"Grace is gone."
Ethan stopped breathing.
"What do you mean gone?"
"She left the building."
"Alone?"
"We don't know."
"Was she taken?"
"We're reviewing cameras."
Ethan's entire body went cold.
Twenty minutes later footage arrived.
Grace exited through a staff door.
No struggle.
No one beside her.
She appeared to leave voluntarily.
Then Ethan noticed what she carried.
The old photograph of Sophie.
On the back, Bellora staff found a handwritten note.
I remembered where Richard is.

And underneath:
He knows what really happened after the crash.
