Chapter 1 - The Rock at the Water’s EdgeMargaret Hale knew Vanessa wanted her frightened.

She did not understand until the chain tightened around her ankle that Vanessa wanted something worse.

The seventy-two-year-old woman sat half on the damp grass, half against the rocky shoreline behind the Hale family mansion. One ankle was secured by a metal chain to a heavy gray rock resting inches from the dark lake.

Margaret had already tried pulling free.

It was useless.

Every movement dragged the chain harder against her ankle.

Vanessa stood above her in an elegant dress, blonde hair perfectly arranged, not even breathing hard.

A silver key ring hung from her fingers.

She shook it.

JINGLE.

Margaret looked at the keys.

“Vanessa… please.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Now you know how to say please.”

“Let me go.”

“After everything you’ve done?”

Margaret’s hands trembled.

“What have I done?”

Vanessa crouched until their faces were level.

“You’ve spent three years interfering in my marriage.”

“That isn’t true.”

“You question every decision I make.”

“Only the ones involving Daniel’s money.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

There.

Margaret saw it.

That was the reason they were beside the lake.

Not family resentment.

Not jealousy.

Money.

Margaret had discovered something two nights earlier.

Documents Vanessa desperately needed back.

Margaret turned toward the mansion.

“Daniel will never forgive you.”

Vanessa lifted the keys again.

“Then let’s see whether he gets here in time to save you.”

Margaret stared at her.

For the first time, she believed Vanessa might actually kill her.

“Please don’t do this.”

Vanessa’s voice became almost gentle.

“You spent years reminding me that you were his mother.”

Margaret swallowed.

“You always thought you mattered most to him.”

“That isn’t what this is about.”

“Isn’t it?”

Vanessa raised the key ring close to Margaret’s face.

“This is your only chance to walk away.”

Margaret reached for it.

Vanessa closed her fist.

“And it doesn’t belong to you.”

“Daniel!”

Margaret screamed toward the house.

“DANIEL!”

Vanessa laughed.

“He’s not home.”

“He could come back.”

“He isn’t supposed to be back until seven.”

Margaret froze.

Vanessa knew Daniel’s schedule precisely.

Of course she did.

Daniel had left that morning for a meeting in Manhattan.

He told Margaret he would return after dinner.

Vanessa had planned around it.

Margaret tried dragging herself backward.

The rock barely moved.

Vanessa looked down at her.

“I gave you a chance.”

“You asked me to lie to my son.”

“I asked you to sign one document.”

“A document saying I’m mentally incompetent.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re seventy-two.”

“I’m not incompetent.”

“You forget things.”

“I forgot where I put my glasses.”

“You interfere with business decisions you don’t understand.”

Margaret suddenly laughed.

It surprised both of them.

“I understood those bank statements.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Margaret continued.

“And I understood the forged signature.”

“Stop.”

“And I understood why Julian Cross has been transferring money through those companies.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I said stop.”

“I made copies.”

That was a bluff.

Margaret had photographed several pages, but she did not know whether they had uploaded properly.

Vanessa believed her.

Fear flashed across her face.

“Where?”

Margaret smiled through tears.

“Daniel will find them.”

Vanessa looked toward the water.

Then toward the rock.

Margaret followed her eyes.

“No.”

Vanessa placed both hands against the stone.

Margaret’s entire body went cold.

“No, Vanessa.”

Vanessa pushed.

The rock shifted.

Margaret screamed.

“NO!”

Vanessa stopped.

For half a second, Margaret saw hesitation.

“Think about Noah,” Margaret begged.

Noah was Vanessa’s nephew? No. There was no child here. Margaret corrected herself through panic.

“Think about Daniel.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I am.”

Then she whispered:

“You should blame yourself.”

She shoved with both hands.

The rock slid over the edge.

SPLASH.

The chain snapped tight.

Margaret was jerked across the grass.

Her fingers clawed desperately at the ground.

“HELP!”

The weight pulled again.

Her body hit the shallow water.

Cold exploded around her legs.

Then her waist.

Then her chest.

“VANESSA!”

Vanessa stood watching.

Margaret tried gripping a root.

It tore free.

The rock sank.

Margaret disappeared beneath the surface.

A man’s voice screamed from behind them.

“MOM!”

Vanessa spun.

Daniel was running across the lawn.

His business jacket was open.

His face was white.

He had seen everything.

Daniel reached the shoreline.

“What did you do?!”

Vanessa lifted both hands instinctively.

The key ring was still in one.

“Daniel, I can explain—”

His hand moved.

SLAP.

Vanessa stumbled sideways.

Daniel stared at her for only a fraction of a second.

Then grabbed the keys.

“Get away from me!”

He ran toward the water.

“Daniel!”

Vanessa reached for him.

He didn’t stop.

He dove.

SPLASH.

The cold lake swallowed him.

Underwater, everything became dark green and distorted.

Daniel opened his eyes.

Nothing.

He kicked downward.

Then he saw silver hair.

Margaret.

Her hands moved weakly.

The chain pulled her deeper.

Daniel swam toward her.

Onshore, Vanessa stood frozen.

Then something slipped from her hand.

Her phone.

It landed in the grass.

The screen illuminated.

A new message appeared.

Is it done?

Vanessa stared at it.

All color left her face.

Underwater, Daniel reached his mother.

He shoved the first key toward the lock.

Wrong.

Margaret’s movements were slowing.

Second key.

Wrong.

Daniel’s lungs burned.

He tried another.

The lock would not turn.

Margaret looked at him underwater.

Her eyes were open.

Terrified.

Daniel grabbed the fourth key.

He pushed it into the lock.

Turned.

CLICK.

And Margaret’s eyes closed.
