CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1 — THE TOAST THAT NEVER HAPPENED

William Harrison had spent nearly eight decades building an empire.

At seventy-eight, he was more than a billionaire. He was the man whose signature could decide the future of banks, hotels, and entire companies. Every member of the Harrison family knew one simple truth—when William was gone, everything would change.

That was why his birthday celebration mattered.

The grand ballroom of his Palm Beach mansion shimmered beneath crystal chandeliers. Fresh white orchids lined the tables. Crystal glasses caught the warm golden light while a string quartet played softly in the background.

Nearly everyone who stood in that room had something to gain... or something to lose.

William smiled as his eldest son raised a champagne glass.

"To our father," he announced. "May we celebrate many more birthdays together."

Laughter filled the room.

Glasses rose into the air.

William reached for his own glass of red wine.

Just before it touched his lips...

A loud burst of flapping wings cut through the music.

Charlie.

The blue-and-gold macaw suddenly spread his wings so violently that several guests turned toward him.

Then, in a perfectly clear voice, the bird shouted,

"Don't forget to put the drugs in his drink!"

The words echoed across the ballroom.

Silence.

The violinists stopped playing.

No one moved.

Several guests slowly lowered their glasses without even realizing they were doing it.

William stared at the wine in his own hand.

Across the room, Claire Harrison's face lost all color.

Her crystal glass slipped through trembling fingers.

It exploded against the marble floor.

The sharp sound seemed to wake everyone from their shock.

Dozens of eyes turned toward her.

Claire quickly shook her head.

"No... that's not..."

But the words wouldn't come.

William didn't accuse her.

He simply looked from the shattered glass...

...to his daughter-in-law.

Charlie tilted his head.

His bright amber eyes never left Claire.

The bird slowly clicked its beak.

As though it was about to speak again.

William quietly placed his untouched wine glass on the table.

"No one drinks another drop."

His voice remained calm.

That frightened the family more than if he had shouted.

Security staff immediately stepped toward the doors.

Within seconds, every exit to the ballroom was locked.

Several guests exchanged nervous glances.

William had always believed that family problems should stay inside the family.

Apparently...

Tonight would be no different.

He slowly looked around the room.

"I want every glass collected."

No one argued.

Uniformed staff carefully placed every wine glass onto silver trays.

William watched each one disappear.

Only after the last glass had been removed did he speak again.

"Charlie has lived in this house for twelve years."

His eyes swept across the room.

"He repeats conversations."

He paused.

"He doesn't invent them."

A heavy silence settled over the ballroom.

Claire finally found her voice.

"William... you can't seriously believe a bird."

Before William could answer...

Charlie suddenly spoke again.

This time...

His voice was softer.

Almost as if he were repeating a private conversation.

"Not tonight... there are too many people watching."

Claire closed her eyes.

Marcus Bennett—the Harrison family's attorney for nearly thirty years—looked down at the floor.

William noticed.

"Marcus."

The attorney slowly looked up.

"Have you heard that sentence before?"

Marcus hesitated.

Only for a second.

But William saw it.

And so did everyone else.

William's expression changed.

Not to anger.

To certainty.

Someone in this room...

Had already heard Charlie say those exact words before tonight.

And whoever that person was...

Had just made the biggest mistake of the evening.
