CHAPTER 5

The Guest Who Never Left
No one spoke after the cassette stopped.
Arthur Harrison's final words lingered in the room.
"The man behind this has been sitting at our dinner table for years."
Richard pressed the Play button again.
Nothing.
The tape had been damaged beyond repair.
Half of Arthur's warning was gone forever.
Ethan leaned back in his chair.
"So Harold wasn't the mastermind."
Richard slowly nodded.
"He was being controlled."
Margaret looked toward the old family photograph inside the wooden box.
It had been taken at Thanksgiving four years earlier.
Arthur sat at the center of the table.
Richard and Margaret stood behind him.
Ethan smiled beside his grandfather.
Business partners.
Close family friends.
Even the family attorney, Harold Preston, appeared in the background.
Arthur had invited the same people to dinner for years.
If his warning was true...
The enemy wasn't a stranger.
He was someone the family trusted.
That evening, they returned to the mansion.
Richard spread dozens of old photographs across the dining room table.
Every Christmas.
Every birthday.
Every charity gala.
Every family vacation.
The same familiar faces appeared over and over again.
Margaret studied each photograph carefully.
Then suddenly stopped.
"Richard..."
"What?"
She pointed to one picture taken seven years earlier.
A company anniversary celebration.
Nearly one hundred employees filled the ballroom.
Arthur stood in the center.
Behind him...
A tall man in a gray suit smiled toward the camera.
Richard frowned.
"So?"
"I've seen him before."
Ethan leaned closer.
"He worked for the company."
"No."
Margaret slowly shook her head.
"He wasn't an employee."
"He was Harold's guest."
Richard immediately searched another album.
Three years later.
The same man appeared again.
Different event.
Different city.
Still standing only a few feet from Arthur.
Another photograph.
Another appearance.
Then another.
The man seemed to exist on the edge of every family gathering.
Never in the center.
Never introduced.
Always watching.
Ethan counted.
"He's in eleven photographs."
Richard looked confused.
"I don't even know his name."
Margaret whispered,
"Exactly."
The next morning...
Richard visited Harrison Capital's headquarters.
He asked Human Resources for every guest list connected to the old company events.
The records stretched back more than a decade.
Receptionists searched archived files.
Nothing.
No registration.
No employee badge.
No contractor records.
The mysterious man officially didn't exist.
Richard was about to leave when an elderly receptionist stopped him.
"I remember him."
Richard turned immediately.
"You do?"
She nodded.
"He always arrived with Mr. Preston."
"What was his name?"
She frowned.
"I don't know."
"But everyone called him..."
"...Mr. Cole."
Richard felt a strange sense of disappointment.
Cole.
It was too common.
Almost impossible to trace.
Then the receptionist quietly added,
"I don't think it was his real name."
Richard stopped walking.
"Why?"
"Because every time your father entered the room..."
"...Mr. Cole stopped smiling."
Meanwhile...
Ethan visited the old estate where Arthur had died.
The staircase had never changed.
Police photographs had shown Arthur falling backward from the upper landing.
Ethan slowly climbed the same steps.
He stood exactly where his grandfather had stood.
Then something caught his attention.
A narrow window overlooked the staircase.
From outside...
Anyone standing in the garden could see the entire landing.
He walked outside.
Measured the distance.
Looked back toward the house.
Perfect view.
Whoever had taken the mysterious photograph mailed to him...
Hadn't been inside the mansion.
They had been outside.
Watching.
Not only Arthur.
Watching everyone.
For years.
As Ethan turned to leave...
He noticed movement beneath the old oak tree.
Something had been buried near the roots.
The recent rain had washed away part of the soil.
A corner of black plastic now protruded from the ground.
Ethan knelt.
Carefully pulled it free.
It wasn't trash.
It was a waterproof document pouch.
Inside...
He found a digital camera memory card.
No label.
No markings.
Only hundreds of photographs.
All taken from outside the mansion.
Some were ten years old.
Some only weeks before Arthur's death.
Every member of the Harrison family had been secretly photographed.
But one folder made Ethan's blood run cold.
It was titled simply:
STAIRCASE
He opened it.
More than two hundred photographs appeared.
All focused on the second-floor landing where Arthur had died.
The final image was timestamped...
8:17 p.m.
The exact night of Arthur's fall.
Ethan enlarged it.
His hands began shaking.
The picture clearly showed Arthur standing at the top of the stairs.
Margaret was arguing with him.
Just as she had confessed.
But in the reflection of a hallway mirror...
Someone else was visible.
A man.
Standing silently behind Arthur.
Watching.
Waiting.
His face wasn't clear.
But one thing was unmistakable.
He wore a gray suit.
The same gray suit...
As the mysterious man from every family photograph.
Ethan immediately called Richard.
His voice trembled.
"Dad..."
"I don't think Grandpa was alone."
Richard froze.
"What did you find?"
Ethan stared at the screen one last time.
Then whispered,
"I think someone watched Grandpa die..."
"...and never tried to save him."
