Chapter 6 - Tessa’s StoryTessa Vale lied first.

She told police Serena meant she planned to confront Marissa about custody.

Then investigators showed her the messages.

Tessa changed her story.

She said Serena had been obsessed with getting Evan to seek primary custody.

Still not a crime.

She said Serena believed Marissa controlled Evan through Hazel.

Still not a crime.

Then investigators asked about “not overdoing it.”

Tessa asked for a lawyer.

By the following day, she was cooperating.

Marissa learned only the portions relevant to Hazel’s safety.

Serena had complained for months that Evan “needed a crisis.”

Not a tragedy.

A crisis.

Something that would make him stop hesitating.

Tessa insisted she never believed Serena would hurt Hazel.

“What did you think she meant?” Ortiz had asked.

Tessa said she thought Serena might provoke an argument in public.

Maybe make Marissa look hysterical.

Maybe allow Hazel to wander briefly and blame Marissa.

Something manipulative.

Not violent.

But Tessa admitted Serena once joked:

“People only believe bad mothers after something happens to the kid.”

Marissa sat across from Dana Brooks listening.

“How does someone hear that and stay friends?”

Dana sighed.

“People normalize terrible statements when they arrive gradually.”

Marissa knew that too well.

She had normalized Serena’s smaller cruelties.

The insults disguised as concerns.

The “helpful” questions.

The way she treated Marissa’s motherhood like a weakness in a negotiation.

Dana opened another folder.

“We also need to discuss the custody petition.”

“What about it?”

“There’s a financial section.”

Marissa frowned.

“Why?”

“Serena’s draft argues that because Hazel primarily resides with Evan, administration of Hazel’s grandmother’s trust should be transferred away from you.”

Marissa went still.

“That’s not automatic.”

“No.”

“The trust document controls succession.”

“Yes.”

“Then why include it?”

“Pressure.”

Marissa understood.

If Serena could make Marissa look unfit as a mother, she could attempt to use the same allegations to seek Marissa’s removal as trustee.

“Who becomes trustee if I’m removed?”

“Let’s check.”

They pulled the trust document.

Hazel’s grandmother, Evelyn Mercer, had named Marissa first.

That choice had once surprised everyone.

Evelyn trusted Marissa even after the divorce.

If Marissa could not serve, the successor trustee was Evan.

Marissa looked at Dana.

“So Serena wanted Evan controlling the trust.”

“Possibly.”

“He wouldn’t steal from Hazel.”

“I’m not saying he would.”

Marissa thought of Serena.

“But Serena could influence him.”

Dana did not answer.

That evening, Marissa reviewed three years of trust records.

Tuition payments.

Summer programs.

Medical expenses.

Everything looked ordinary.

Then she noticed invoices from a company called BrightSteps Educational Services.

$6,800.

$7,250.

$9,100.

Marissa remembered the name.

Evan had submitted them.

Tutoring and enrichment programs for Hazel.

Marissa had approved them because invoices included detailed descriptions.

Hazel did attend tutoring.

But not that much.

Marissa called the actual tutoring center.

They had never heard of BrightSteps.

Her skin went cold.

She checked the invoices again.

Payments had gone directly from the trust to BrightSteps.

Total over eighteen months:

$48,600.

Marissa called Evan.

“Do you know BrightSteps?”

“Yes. Serena arranged it.”

“For what?”

“Hazel’s tutoring.”

“No.”

Evan went silent.

“What?”

“I just called Hazel’s tutoring center.”

Marissa stood at her kitchen counter.

“They never billed through BrightSteps.”

Evan’s breathing changed.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying forty-eight thousand six hundred dollars left Hazel’s trust through invoices your wife gave you.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Did you verify them?”

“Serena said BrightSteps coordinated different programs.”

“Did you verify them?”

Silence.

Marissa closed her eyes.

“No.”

Evan whispered, “Oh God.”

Marissa opened the state business registry on her laptop.

BrightSteps Educational Services LLC.

Formed nineteen months earlier.
