Chapter 18 - Everything on the DriveThe hard drive contained 312 audio files.

Dozens were useless.

Business calls.

Arguments.

Gavin dictating notes to himself.

But several changed the case.

One recording captured Daphne and Gavin arguing before Marlowe’s wedding.

Daphne:

“You said you could make her trust you.”

Gavin:

“She does.”

Daphne:

“Then why won’t she sign the investment authority?”

Gavin:

“Because you keep asking about it. Back off.”

Another recording was worse.

Daphne:

“After the wedding, give it six months.”

Gavin:

“And then?”

Daphne:

“She receives the first liquidity release next year.”

Gavin:

“You told me twelve.”

Daphne:

“Approximately.”

Gavin laughed.

“You’re selling your daughter cheaply.”

Silence.

Then Daphne said:

“Don’t speak about her like that.”

Gavin replied:

“You’re the one who brought me here.”

Marlowe stopped the audio.

She could not continue.

Evelyn sat beside her.

“You don’t have to hear all of it today.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

Marlowe looked at her.

Evelyn spoke gently.

“Evidence does not become more true because you injure yourself listening to it repeatedly.”

Marlowe’s eyes filled.

For the first time in weeks, she let herself cry.

Not silently.

Not neatly.

She cried for the woman who had stood in a wedding dress believing everyone around her loved her.

Copper approached and rested his head in her lap.

Marlowe buried her face in his fur.

Eventually she returned to the recordings.

One file was dated six months after the wedding.

Gavin’s voice:

“I’m not leaving her.”

Daphne:

“That was the agreement.”

Gavin:

“The agreement changed.”

Daphne:

“Because of the company?”

A pause.

Gavin:

“Because of everything.”

Daphne laughed bitterly.

“You mean the money.”

Another pause.

Then Gavin said something Marlowe did not expect.

“I love her.”

Daphne went silent.

Gavin continued.

“I didn’t plan to. But I do.”

Marlowe’s chest tightened.

For one dangerous second, part of her wanted that sentence to matter.

Then Daphne asked:

“Does Marlowe know why you met her?”

“No.”

“Then what you love is the version of yourself she believes in.”

The recording ended.

Marlowe stared at the screen.

Daphne had understood something Gavin never had.

Love built on fraud could still contain real feeling.

But real feeling could not make the fraud disappear.

Another recording, months later, captured Gavin saying:

“If she finds out now, I lose everything.”

Daphne:

“You mean her.”

Gavin:

“I mean everything.”

There it was.

The hierarchy.

Marlowe had never been enough to make him choose honesty.

The final relevant file was recorded after the forged $120,000 transfer.

Gavin sounded nervous.

“That worked too easily.”

Daphne replied:

“Then the larger one will work.”

“No. Larger transfers trigger review.”

“What do we do?”

“We get her real signature.”

“How?”

“Give me time.”

That was the wet packet.

The ruined document.

Copper knocking over the water.

Marlowe stared down at him.

“You did it twice.”

Copper wagged his tail.

Once, he had accidentally ruined the proxy packet.

Then he had deliberately barked at the wardrobe.

A dog had disrupted their plan more effectively than any lawyer.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“He deserves a steak.”

“He deserves the company.”

They both laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh Marlowe had managed since coming home early.

Then Evelyn opened one final file.

A video.

Not audio.

Gavin had recorded himself speaking into his laptop the night before Marlowe left for Chicago.

“If she signs when she gets back, the board issue is solved.”

He paused.

Then added:

“If she doesn’t, Daphne and I need another approach.”

Marlowe looked at the date.

The day before the wardrobe.

The affair had not merely resumed from desire.

They had been strategizing in her bedroom while she traveled for the company they were trying to control.

The criminal case no longer depended on anyone’s memory.

Gavin had documented himself.
