Chapter 12 - What Her Father Hid Inside Noah’s TrustDaniel’s office became the safest place to work.

Police stationed an officer outside while Sarah and Daniel opened every document connected to the trust.

By noon, they found the amendment.

It had been stored separately from the copies Sarah received.

Her father had created it six months before his death.

The language was dense.

But one section stood out.

On the date thirty days before Noah’s ninth birthday, ownership rights in a private holding company called Carter Ridge Resources LLC would transfer irrevocably into Noah’s protected trust.

Sarah stared at the name.

“I’ve never heard of this company.”

Daniel nodded.

“Almost nobody has.”

“What does it own?”

“Land interests.”

“You said mineral rights.”

“Yes.”

“How valuable?”

“Potentially much more than the rest of the trust.”

Sarah’s pulse quickened.

“Why?”

Daniel opened a map.

Her father had quietly acquired small interests in several rural properties over decades.

Most had seemed worthless.

Until surveys discovered lithium-bearing deposits beneath one region.

Sarah stared at the estimated figures.

Tens of millions.

Possibly more.

“This can’t be right.”

“It isn’t cash,” Daniel said. “And extraction might never happen. But the rights have significant speculative value.”

Sarah understood instantly.

Victor Lang didn’t simply want Noah’s trust.

He wanted control of an asset that could become a fortune.

“What happens Tuesday?”

“The final ownership transfer becomes irreversible.”

“Can Lang stop it?”

“Not directly.”

“But if Ryan gets control before then?”

“He could attempt to redirect voting authority during ongoing litigation.”

“For how long?”

“Long enough to sign agreements.”

Sarah felt sick.

“What kind of agreements?”

Daniel showed her another document.

A purchase offer.

From a company called Northstar Extraction Partners.

The signature line for the trust was blank.

The proposed payment was shockingly low compared with Daniel’s estimated value.

“Northstar belongs to Lang?”

“Through layers of entities, I believe so.”

“So Ryan gets custody. I’m removed as trustee. Ryan signs Noah’s rights away cheaply. Lang gets property worth tens of millions.”

“That appears to be the goal.”

“And Ryan’s debt disappears.”

“Yes.”

Sarah sat back.

“What does Diane get?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We found a draft side agreement.”

“How much?”

“Five hundred thousand.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“She sold her grandson for half a million dollars.”

“Attempted to.”

Sarah stood and paced.

“What about Megan?”

“We still don’t know.”

Her phone rang.

Megan.

Sarah answered instantly.

“Where are you?”

Her sister was crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Megan.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m driving to you.”

“Stop somewhere public.”

“I’m five minutes away.”

Ruiz was notified.

Megan arrived shaking.

Sarah wanted to hug her.

She also wanted answers.

“What did you sign?”

Megan covered her face.

“Ryan came to me three days ago.”

“Why?”

“He said you were considering divorce.”

“I was.”

“He said you’d been drinking.”

Sarah stared.

“I barely drink.”

“I know. I told him that.”

“What did he ask you to sign?”

“A statement that you’d been stressed.”

“The filing says I’m erratic and emotionally dysregulated.”

“That is not what I signed.”

Daniel handed her the declaration.

Megan read it.

Her face changed.

“He replaced pages.”

“How?”

“The signature page was separate.”

Daniel nodded grimly.

Classic.

Sarah asked, “Who took you this morning?”

Megan looked ashamed.

“Ryan’s brother.”

Sarah froze.

“Evan?”

She had not seen Evan in years.

The brother whose debt started everything.

“He called and said Ryan was going to hurt himself.”

Sarah stared.

“So you went with him.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“A parking garage.”

“Was Ryan there?”

“No.”

“Lang?”

Megan nodded.

“He told me Ryan was in serious trouble.”

“What did he want?”

“For me to convince you not to fight custody until after Tuesday.”

Sarah laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

“I told him no.”

“Then why did he let you leave?”

Megan’s face became strange.

“He wanted me to give you something.”

She reached into her purse.

A small USB drive.

Sarah did not touch it.

“What is that?”

“He said it belonged to Dad.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Megan placed it on the desk.

“Lang said Dad gave it to him the night he died.”

Sarah stared at the tiny black drive.

“Why would he give us evidence?”

Megan shook her head.

“He said because after Tuesday it won’t matter.”

Daniel whispered, “Don’t plug it into anything connected to a network.”

They used an isolated laptop.

The drive contained one video file.

Dated the night Sarah’s father died.

Sarah pressed play.

Her father appeared on screen.

Alive.

Sitting in his office.

Across from him sat Victor Lang.

The camera angle was hidden.

Her father’s voice was calm.

“You can threaten Ryan all you want.”

Lang leaned back.

“I don’t need to threaten him. He already agreed.”

Sarah stopped breathing.

Her father continued.

“My daughter will find out.”

“Not if Ryan controls the story.”

Her father stared at him.

Then said something Sarah never expected.

“Ryan isn’t the person I’m worried about.”

Lang smiled.

“You should be.”

“No.”

May you like

Her father leaned forward.

“I’m worried about Diane.”
