Chapter 4 - Veronica Was Marcus’s LoverThe photograph was underneath the bank records.

Adrian almost missed it.
Detective Ford did not.
“Who are they?”
Adrian looked.
Marcus.
Veronica.
Outside a Manhattan hotel.
Kissing.
Timestamp:
Four months before Claire’s crash.
Adrian felt something inside him go quiet.
Not shock.
Something colder.
His wife had been his brother’s lover.
Before Claire’s crash.
Before Adrian met Veronica.
Before Veronica sat across from him at a grief fundraiser and said:
“I understand what it’s like to enter a family after it has already been broken.”
She had known exactly how it broke.
“Did Claire take this?”
Ford asked.
A note on the back answered.
M + V. Sept. 14. Plaza service entrance.
Claire’s handwriting.
“Yes.”
Eli was no longer in the room.
Adrian had asked a nurse to take him for food.
Good.
Some truths belonged to adults first.
Ford studied the vendor statements.
“Claire discovered the financial relationship.”
“And the affair.”
“Maybe.”
Adrian found another note.
V says Marcus used her company. Says she wants out. Meeting tomorrow.
Claire had believed Veronica might cooperate.
“What happened at the meeting?”
Ford asked.
“I don’t know.”
They checked the memory card.
The fourth video.
Adrian opened it.
Parking garage.
Night before the crash.
Claire stood beside Veronica.
No Marcus.
Claire’s voice was sharp.
“You have one chance.”
Veronica looked terrified.
“I know.”
“Give me the original invoices.”
“I can’t.”
“You said you wanted out.”
“I do.”
“Then choose.”
Veronica looked away.
Claire continued.
“Tomorrow I go to the board.”
Veronica’s head snapped up.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus knows.”
Claire froze.
“How?”
“He saw your meeting request.”
“What did you tell him?”
“Nothing.”
Claire stared.
Veronica broke.
“I told him you found the accounts.”
Claire stepped backward.
“You warned him.”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“He said if I talked, he’d make sure I went down with him.”
“You are already involved.”
“I know.”
Claire shook her head.
“I should go to police tonight.”
Veronica grabbed her arm.
“No.”
“Let go.”
“Claire, listen.”
She released her.
“Don’t take your car tomorrow.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Veronica began crying.
“Just don’t.”
“Why?”
“I can’t tell you.”
Claire’s face changed.
“You already did.”
The file ended.
Adrian stood.
“She warned her.”
Ford nodded slowly.
“She did.”
“So Claire knew.”
“Apparently.”
“Then why did she drive?”
They needed Claire.
But she was resting.
Instead Ford called the family’s former mechanic.
Ray Colson.
He remembered.
“Mrs. Mercer called me around eleven that night.”
“What did she say?”
“She thought somebody had touched the car.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“What did you do?”
“I inspected it.”
“Brakes?”
“Basic check. Everything appeared functional.”
“Did you tell her it was safe?”
“Yes.”
“Were you sure?”
“At the time.”
“Did Marcus know you checked?”
Silence.
“Ray?”
“He called me the next morning.”
Adrian’s pulse accelerated.
“What did he ask?”
“Whether Claire had contacted me.”
“And?”
“I said yes.”
“What did he say?”
“That she was becoming paranoid.”
Adrian felt sick.
Marcus knew Claire suspected the car.
He confirmed she had it checked.
Whatever had been done—
it survived that check.
Then another memory struck Adrian.
The divorce.
Claire had filed for it after months of arguments about Marcus.
Adrian believed she had become obsessed.
Marcus repeatedly told him:
“She wants control.”
“She hates me because Dad trusted me.”
“She’s trying to make you choose.”
Adrian had listened.
He had eventually told Claire:
“If you keep turning every family problem into Marcus, I can’t live like this.”
Claire answered:
“Then maybe you shouldn’t.”
Four months before the crash, they finalized the divorce.
Shared custody.
Adrian hated it.
Marcus comforted him.
The same brother who had helped create the conflict.
Adrian looked at Ford.
“He broke my marriage before he tried to stop her.”
Ford said nothing.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Nathan Cole.
Claire’s former attorney.
“Adrian, I heard police reopened the crash.”
“Yes.”
“I have something.”
“What?”
“Claire asked me to keep it unless she regained capacity or police reopened the case.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“A letter.”
“From Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Read it.”
Nathan hesitated.
Then:
“Claire believed Marcus was telling people she was mentally unstable.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Of course.
“She also believed he was telling her something about you.”
“What?”
“That you knew about the missing money.”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
“Claire did not believe it at first.”
“Who told her?”
“Veronica.”
Everything tilted again.
Marcus told Adrian Claire was unstable.
He told Claire Adrian might be corrupt.
He isolated them from each other.
Then Veronica reinforced the lie.
“She thought I was part of it?”
“For several days.”
Adrian could barely breathe.
“That’s why she didn’t come to me.”
“Yes.”
Nathan continued.
“But before the crash, she learned you were not involved.”
“How?”
“She found board-access records showing you had never opened the transfer files.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did she still hate me?”
Nathan laughed softly.
“No.”
The answer nearly broke him.
“She was angry.”
“That sounds more accurate.”
“She told me she wanted to speak with you after the board meeting.”
Adrian swallowed.
“About what?”
“Reconciliation.”
Silence.
The room disappeared.
Claire had planned to expose Marcus.
Then talk to Adrian.
The crash happened first.
Nathan continued.
“And there’s something else you need to know.”
“What?”
“Claire believed Veronica’s relationship with Marcus had changed.”
“How?”
“She thought Veronica was trying to leave him.”
“That’s in the video.”
“Yes.”
“But Claire was wrong about one thing.”
Adrian waited.
Nathan’s voice lowered.
“Veronica wasn’t only afraid of Marcus.”
“What?”
“Claire believed Veronica had become obsessed with you.”
Adrian froze.
“That’s impossible. I hadn’t met her.”
“She had met you.”
“When?”
“Several times at Mercer events.”
Adrian searched his memory.
Faces.
Cocktails.
Board dinners.
Maybe.
Nathan continued.
“Claire wrote that Veronica asked strange questions about your marriage.”
Adrian felt cold.
“Before the crash?”
“Yes.”
Then Ford’s phone buzzed.
A newly recovered message from Veronica’s old cloud account.
To Marcus.
Two weeks before Claire’s crash.
Veronica:
WHEN THIS IS OVER, I’M DONE WITH YOU.
Marcus:
YOU THINK ADRIAN WANTS YOU?
Veronica:
HE DOESN’T KNOW ME YET.
Marcus:
EXACTLY.
Then Veronica replied:
HE WILL.
Adrian stared.
The affair.
The money.
The crash.
His later relationship with Veronica.
They were not separate stories.
Veronica had wanted out of Marcus’s life—
and into Adrian’s—
before Claire ever went off that road.
And after Claire could no longer speak, Marcus had found a new use for Veronica.
Get close to Adrian.
Find Claire’s evidence.
Make sure he never reopened the past.
May you like
Adrian had not simply married a woman who lied about knowing his brother.
He may have married the person Marcus sent to keep him from discovering the truth.
