Chapter 9 - HE’S STILL HER FATHERSophie returned from Ryan’s weekend carrying a new tablet.

Emily immediately disliked it.
Not because expensive.
Because Ryan had set it up.
“Daddy says this one is private.”
Emily froze.
“Private from who?”
“Everyone.”
“Did he say from me?”
Sophie hesitated.
“Kind of.”
Emily did not take it.
She texted Rachel.
Within hour Rachel advised:
Do not confiscate aggressively unless safety. Review parenting order. Ask Ryan in app.
Emily wrote:
Please provide device account details and parental-control settings.
Ryan replied:
No. Sophie deserves privacy.
Rachel drafted response.
At eight years old, parental access for safety was reasonable. Court later ordered shared access.
Not dramatic.
But Ryan’s instinct again: create private channel.
Emily documented.
Sophie asked:
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“Daddy says you’re trying to control everything.”
Emily inhaled.
“Your dad and I disagree.”
“Who’s right?”
“You don’t have to decide.”
Sophie looked relieved.
That sentence became Emily’s rule.
Do not recruit child.
Ryan broke more often.
He told Sophie:
Grandpa Crawford is trying to steal house.
Rachel raised in court.
Judge warned both parents against involving child.
Both.
Even though Emily had not.
Frustrating symmetry.
Rachel explained.
“Judges often speak broadly to avoid escalating.”
Emily swallowed anger.
Learn.
Meanwhile paternity question emerged not because Emily demanded, but Daniel’s legal identity complicated birth certificate.
Ryan Carter listed father.
Would acknowledgment remain? Yes, identity alias doesn't erase biological paternity. DNA unnecessary unless disputed.
Ryan did not dispute.
Good.
Emily refused test.
“Sophie doesn’t need another uncertainty.”
Rachel agreed.
Laura’s children complicated emotional future.
Ethan, fifteen, messaged Sophie on social media.
Hi. I think I’m your brother.
Sophie showed Emily.
Emily nearly panicked.
Then stopped.
She called child therapist.
How handle?
Therapist advised age-appropriate truth and controlled contact if safe.
Emily contacted Laura.
Awkward.
“We have to talk about kids.”
Laura agreed.
They arranged video call supervised by mothers.
Ethan and Molly looked terrified.
Sophie stared.
“So Daddy is your dad too?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophie thought.
“Did he leave you?”
Laura flinched.
Ethan answered.
“He didn’t live with us.”
Sophie looked at Emily.
“Will he leave me?”
Emily’s heart broke.
“No one can promise what another person will do. But your dad loves you and you have me.”
Honest.
Could not guarantee Ryan.
After call Sophie cried.
Emily held.
She hated Ryan for forcing complexity into child life.
But she did not tell Sophie.
Later Laura texted:
Thank you for not blaming my children.
Emily stared.
Then replied:
They didn’t do this.
That was growth.
Ryan hated contact.
He called Emily.
“You had no right.”
“Sophie wanted.”
“You let Laura get to her?”
“She met siblings.”
“They are not part of our family.”
Emily laughed.
“They are Sophie’s siblings.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
She interrupted.
“You don’t get to erase biology when inconvenient.”
Silence.
A perfect echo of Evelyn? Different story but same principle.
Ryan said:
“You’re turning them against me.”
“No.”
“You and Crawford.”
“Ryan—Daniel—whatever.”
He flinched through phone silence.
Emily continued.
“This is what you do. Anyone talking without your permission is manipulation.”
“That’s not true.”
“You told me that about my father. You told Vanessa loyalty meant protecting you. Now Sophie meeting siblings is betrayal.”
Ryan breathed.
“Don’t psychoanalyze me.”
“Fine. Then answer one thing.”
“What?”
“What did you mean on driveway when you told Vanessa, ‘If Bennett name comes up, she doesn’t know’?”
Silence.
“Ryan?”
“It was about trust.”
“What about it?”
“You didn’t know house title.”
Emily frowned.
Could be true.
Vanessa later deposition would test.
“Why would Vanessa know?”
“I told her.”
Of course.
“You told your mistress my trust details.”
“You were divorcing me in practice.”
“No. You were cheating.”
“Same difference.”
“No.”
Emily hung up.
She was getting better.
No endless argument.
At forensic review, money transfers widened.
$1.8 million over three years through Carter Strategic Holdings.
Some legitimate business revenue.
Some joint funds.
Some loans against securities.
One loan document contained Emily’s electronic signature.
Emily stared.
“I never signed this.”
Forensic analyst Priya Shah checked metadata.
Signature inserted from scanned prior document.
IP address from Ryan’s office.
Loan amount $600,000.
Collateral? Ryan’s interest in LLC and purported marital assets.
Some trust property improperly referenced but lender did not get trust lien because title mismatch.
Crawford said:
“Trust controls saved property.”
Emily whispered:
“My father.”
“Yes.”
Richard’s refusal to retitle house jointly—once Emily saw as insult to Ryan—now prevented unauthorized pledge.
That did not make Richard perfect.
But caution mattered.
Emily asked:
“Could Ryan go to prison?”
Priya said:
“Not my call.”
Rachel:
“Potential fraud referrals, yes. But investigations take time.”
No instant arrest.
Good.
Emily wanted consequences.
Then remembered Sophie.
Prison would affect daughter.
Justice and pain not separate.
She cried later.
Not because she wanted Ryan spared.
Because every consequence belonged to more people than him.
Crawford found another letter Richard never sent.
Emily hesitated to read.
Eventually.
Emily,
You may someday hate me for keeping the house inside trust.
I hope I am wrong.
If I am right, I would rather you hate me in a house no husband can quietly mortgage away.
Emily sobbed.
Her father had loved through control.
Sometimes too much.
But one control protected.
Complexity again.
She wished he had trusted her more.
She wished she had listened once.
Both true.
At end chapter Vanessa finally sat for deposition.
Rachel asked:
“What did Ryan mean when he said Emily ‘doesn’t know’?”
Vanessa looked at lawyer.
Dana nodded answer truthfully.
Vanessa said:
“He told me Emily did not know he had worked for Bennett before meeting her.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
Vanessa continued.
“He said if Crawford brought up the Bennett name, I should stay quiet.”
Rachel asked:
“When did Ryan tell you?”
“Months ago.”
Emily stared.
Vanessa had known.
Not full identity.
But one major secret.
Rachel asked:
“Why did you keep it from Emily?”
Vanessa looked directly at Emily.
“Because I wanted him to leave her.”
There.
No excuse.

Villain benefited early.
Now own words became evidence.
