Chapter 14 - MADELINE’S LAST LIEMadeline gave one final interview through her attorney.

She claimed I returned to steal the mansion.

She said I used Evelyn’s illness to manufacture a letter.

She accused Grace of accepting money from me.

She described Nathan as emotionally controlled by his wife.

The interview might have worked eight months earlier.

Now evidence existed.

The sealed letter’s paper came from Evelyn’s personal stationery.

Its ink matched the period before her death.

A nurse remembered Evelyn writing it.

The nurse also saw Grace seal the envelope.

Bank records showed no payment from me to Grace.

The guest video showed Madeline initiating physical contact.

The dashboard records showed message interference.

The biometric photograph connected Madeline to the stolen transfer.

The forged will carried her email trail.

A story cannot survive indefinitely when every independent object disagrees with it.

The interview damaged her plea negotiations.

Her attorney withdrew from representing her in public statements.

Madeline then requested to speak with Nathan.

He agreed to one monitored meeting.

I did not attend.

Nathan told me what happened afterward.

Madeline began with accusation.

“You chose her over your sister.”

“I chose evidence over your story.”

“She came into our family and took Mom away.”

“Mom asked Sophia for help.”

“Because Sophia manipulated her.”

“Then why did you steal?”

Madeline cried.

Said she felt invisible beside him.

Nathan inherited their mother’s attention.

Sophia received Evelyn’s trust.

Madeline believed the mansion was the only proof that she mattered.

Nathan listened.

Then he said, “Feeling unloved does not make another person’s life available for destruction.”

Madeline asked whether he still loved her.

“Yes.”

“Then help me.”

“I will support treatment. I will not interfere with the case.”

“That isn’t love.”

“It is the only kind I can offer without helping you become worse.”

Madeline ended the meeting.

Weeks later, she accepted a plea.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Evidence tampering.

Assault.

Reckless endangerment.

Her statement finally acknowledged that she took my handbag while knowing I needed the inhaler.

She admitted pushing me intentionally.

She admitted framing me eight months earlier.

No claim that I provoked her.

No claim that Grace conspired.

The judge accepted the plea.

Consequences followed.

So did the slower question.

What happened to Nathan and me now that the person separating us could no longer control the door?
