Chapter 15 - Ethan Tried to Turn Claire Against Daniel From the GraveThe leak appeared online two days later.

WIDOWER’S LATE WIFE TRIED TO REMOVE HIM FROM $1.2M POLICY BEFORE DEATH.
A local tabloid published it.
Then national sites repeated it.
The article implied Claire feared Daniel’s financial judgment.
Some comments went further.
Maybe she was planning to leave him.
Maybe the accident wasn’t so accidental.
Daniel stared.
Rumor required almost no evidence once emotion existed.
Ethan had released the beneficiary worksheet.
Not the context.
Rachel Monroe advised silence.
“Any public response feeds it.”
Daniel hated that.
Lily heard about it at school.
A classmate said:
“Your dad stole your mom’s money.”
She came home crying.
Daniel’s restraint ended there.
Not publicly.
Legally.
He authorized Rachel to seek emergency sealing orders for Lily-related trust records and a civil injunction against further dissemination of confidential child information.
More importantly, detectives traced the file.
The uploaded scan contained metadata from a hotel business center in Albany.
Police reached it within hours.
Ethan was gone.
But the printer retained a job log.
He had printed bus schedules.
One to Burlington.
One to Boston.
Another to Montreal.
Still moving.
Still creating false trails.
Then Ethan emailed Rachel Monroe directly.
Subject:
SETTLEMENT.
He offered the original Claire files, complete Willow Ridge records, and access to offshore accounts.
In exchange:
Prosecutors recommend no more than five years.
Rachel forwarded it to law enforcement.
Ethan did not get to negotiate through Daniel.
But he included a message meant for him.
Your wife was worse than me.
Daniel read it once.
Deleted it.
Maybe Ethan believed that.
Maybe not.
Ranking guilt no longer mattered.
Lily needed safety.
Noah needed safety.
Facts needed preservation.
Still, Ethan’s claim triggered another truth.
Vanessa had physically and emotionally abused Lily.
Ethan had designed and monetized the system.
Diane facilitated.
Caroline professionalized it.
Daniel ignored warning signs.
Everyone played a different role.
The story was not cleaner because one person wanted to be the mastermind.
Then Julia arrived with something unexpected.
“Claire’s journals.”
Daniel looked up.
“I thought we went through everything.”
“You didn’t have these.”
Julia placed three notebooks on the table.
“Claire gave them to me when she started treatment for anxiety after Lily was born.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
“She was overwhelmed.”
He felt immediate guilt.
Julia saw it.
“Stop.”
“What?”
“Do not rewrite postpartum exhaustion into a secret message about your marriage.”
Daniel nodded.
Fair.
They searched for Vanessa’s name.
Found it twice.
Vanessa Vale — donor coordinator. Too interested in family finances.
Then:
Had to fire Vanessa today. She cried. I feel terrible, but she accessed Dad’s donor profile after being warned.
Claire felt bad.
Of course she did.
Then another entry.
Vanessa asked if wealth makes me nervous because people might target Lily. Strange question. Maybe harmless. Still unsettled.
Daniel stared.
Claire had sensed something.
Years before.
Not a murder plot.
Not destiny.
A boundary problem.
Vanessa’s obsession with wealth.
Then one final entry:
Told Daniel about weird clinic employee but didn’t use her name. He joked I’m becoming Dad.
Daniel froze.
He remembered.
Claire had once said:
“Some fundraiser girl keeps asking how much everyone is worth.”
Daniel had laughed.
“Your father thinks everybody wants his money.”
Claire said:
“Maybe he’s right sometimes.”
Daniel had forgotten.
He had technically heard about Vanessa years before meeting her.
He just never connected the name.
Again, nothing supernatural.
No giant hidden conspiracy.
Just information people failed to connect until after damage.
Detective Grant called that evening.
“We may have Ethan.”
Daniel stood.
“Where?”
“Burlington station.”
“May?”
“A man matching him bought a ticket under a false name.”
“Can you get him?”
“Officers are moving.”
Daniel waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then Grant called again.
“He ran.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Of course.”
“He left a bag.”
“What’s inside?”
“Claire’s original clinic file.”
Relief.
“Anything else?”
“A laptop.”
“That’s good.”
“Maybe.”
“Why maybe?”
Grant hesitated.
“Because the laptop contains a scheduled email.”
“To who?”
“Every parent who ever had a child at Willow Ridge.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What’s attached?”
“Internal treatment videos.”
“What kind?”
“Children being denied food.”
His stomach dropped.
“If that goes out—”
“Those children’s privacy is destroyed.”
“When does it send?”
Grant answered:
“Six hours.”
Investigators needed the password to cancel it.

Only Ethan knew it.
And he had just disappeared into the night.
