Chapter 9 - Victor Was Not Just CarelessThe recording was made in Jonathan’s study.

Date:

Six weeks before Jonathan died.

Jonathan was away?

No.

He had hidden recorder.

Perhaps deliberately.

Celeste’s voice:

“If Madison stays beneficiary, I control nothing.”

Victor:

“You control management.”

“That’s not ownership.”

“You married a man with a child. What did you expect?”

Celeste’s tone sharpened.

“Don’t moralize. You’re here because you want land.”

Victor laughed.

“I want a deal.”

Then Celeste:

“Madison is the only thing standing between me and thirty million dollars.”

Victor answered:

“Then stop thinking about Madison. Think about structure.”

Evelyn’s hands shook.

Not because Victor directly threatened Madison.

Because he did not react to sentence.

No:

What are you talking about?

No:

She’s a child.

Instead structure.

Victor explained:

Blue Heron debt.

Default.

Foreclosure.

Successor beneficiary.

He said:

“If she no longer qualifies under Cardinal, title simplifies.”

Celeste:

“And if she goes to residential school?”

Victor:

“Depends how permanent.”

Silence.

Evelyn stopped recording.

Could not hear more.

Malcolm said:

“This is bad.”

“Bad?”

“Potential conspiracy.”

“He knew she wanted Madison removed.”

“Yes.”

“He advised how.”

“Yes.”

“He profited.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked away.

Her surviving son.

Jonathan’s brother.

Madison’s uncle.

Then she forced herself to continue.

Victor’s next words:

“Do not fabricate behavior.”

Celeste laughed.

“I don’t need to.”

“She’s eleven.”

“She’s angry.”

“Her parents are dead.”

“Exactly.”

Victor paused.

“Celeste, I’m serious. If school recommendation is genuine, fine. If not, I’m out.”

Celeste:

“You’re already in.”

Victor:

“No.”

Then:

“I want the property. I don’t want a criminal case.”

That mattered.

Victor was greedy.

Complicit in structure.

But at least he drew line.

Did he know Celeste later crossed it?

Probably not at first.

Still, he kept pursuing foreclosure after Jonathan died.

After seeing trust clause.

After knowing possible residential removal.

Enough.

Evelyn sent recording to investigators.

Victor was called in.

This time he stopped lying.

“I knew Celeste wanted Madison out.”

Evelyn sat across from him with attorneys.

“Why?”

“She said Madison needed treatment.”

“Did you believe?”

“At first.”

“After?”

Victor looked down.

“No.”

“When did you stop believing?”

“When Celeste asked me to recommend Havenbrook.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then why continue foreclosure?”

“Because I separated things.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Business from family.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You separated profit from consequence.”

Victor cried.

“I never wanted Madison hurt.”

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“That does not help as much as you think.”

Evelyn continued.

“You created financial pressure Celeste could use.”

“I know.”

“You helped her understand successor clause.”

“Yes.”

“You knew land value.”

“Yes.”

“You hid from me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Jonathan would have hated me.”

Evelyn stared.

“He is dead.”

“I know.”

“You were still trying to avoid disappointing him after death while doing exactly what would have disappointed him.”

Victor covered his face.

Then:

“Celeste has someone else.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Buyer?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know name.”

“Stop.”

“I swear.”

“What do you know?”

Victor wiped his eyes.

“Private equity group.”

“Which?”

“Davenport Strategic.”

Malcolm frowned.

“I know them.”

A regional investment firm.

Real estate.

Healthcare.

Hospitality.

“Who runs it?”

Malcolm searched.

Founder:

Charles Davenport.

Evelyn knew that name.

Jonathan’s former father-in-law.

Lauren’s father.

Madison’s maternal grandfather.

Evelyn stared.

“Charles wants the house?”

Victor nodded.

“He approached Celeste.”

“When?”

“After Jonathan died.”

This made no sense.

Lauren’s father should want property preserved for Madison.

Unless there was another motive.

Evelyn called Rebecca.

“Did your father approach Celeste about Raleigh?”

Silence.

Rebecca cursed.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Would he want the house?”

“He hates the Carringtons.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Rebecca paused.

“My father believes Jonathan stole it from Lauren.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

There.

Family grievance.

“When Lauren died, what did she leave?”

“Her trust rights.”

“To Madison.”

“Yes.”

“Then Jonathan retained control.”

“Yes.”

“Charles thought wrong?”

“He thought Jonathan manipulated Lauren’s estate while she was sick.”

“Did he?”

“No evidence.”

“But Charles believes.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn felt exhausted.

Every adult had a story justifying control over the same child’s property.

Celeste:

Jonathan promised me.

Victor:

Business opportunity.

Charles:

Lauren was cheated.

All roads passed through Madison.

“How much would Charles pay?”

“Unknown.”

Victor answered from across table:

“Twenty million.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“For thirty-five-million land.”

“Yes.”

“So Celeste gets maybe five after debt, and Charles captures rest.”

Victor nodded.

“But why would Celeste sell instead of keep?”

“She needs cash.”

“For what?”

Victor hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Financial audit answered hours later.

Celeste owed nearly $6 million.

Not from luxury spending.

From something stranger.

Payments to:

NorthStar Reproductive Trust.

Private medical legal fund.

Evelyn frowned.

“What is that?”

Malcolm looked uncomfortable.

“A trust connected to fertility and surrogacy arrangements.”

Silence.

Celeste had no children.

At least none anyone knew.

Then another record surfaced.

Fourteen years earlier.

Before Jonathan.

Celeste had given birth to a baby girl.

No child appeared in her public life.

No custody record easily accessible.

Evelyn stared.

“Where is the child?”

Malcolm continued searching.

Adoption?

No.

Then a sealed family court reference.

Mother:

Celeste Morgan.

Child:

female.

Father:

Charles Davenport.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Lauren’s father.

Madison’s maternal grandfather.

Celeste had a child with him years before marrying Jonathan.

And suddenly the secret buyer was no longer simply a business partner.

Celeste and Charles shared a hidden daughter.
