Chapter 4 - Thomas Whitmore’s Missing AgreementThe 1983 agreement was incomplete.

Three pages existed in county archives.
The fourth was missing.
Pages one through three established a joint purchase between Thomas Whitmore and Charles Weller.
Both invested equally.
Both received rights to the full tract.
Then came an option.
Thomas could buy Charles out under certain conditions.
The purchase required a final payment and notarized release.
County records showed the payment.
But no release.
Without page four, nobody knew whether Charles surrendered all future claims.
Malcolm called Evelyn.
“This could be why Ashcombe exists.”
“Charles believes Thomas never completed the buyout.”
“Maybe.”
“Forty years later?”
“Title disputes can survive if there was fraud.”
Evelyn looked at Hawthorne House beyond the gate.
“If Thomas cheated Charles…”
“Then parts of the transfer could become vulnerable.”
“And Madison?”
“The preservation trust still complicates everything.”
“But if she’s declared not Andrew’s daughter…”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
Two legal pressure points.
Old ownership.
Modern beneficiary status.
Someone had designed the attack carefully.
“Charles alone?”
“Not necessarily.”
“What about Grant Mercer?”
“He represents Ashcombe.”
“Celeste?”
“Her petition helps Ashcombe.”
Evelyn said:
“So they’re working together.”
“Likely.”
“Then I’m going inside.”
“Police?”
“Already contacted.”
“Wait for them.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“I am not confronting Celeste.”
That was mostly true.
“I am retrieving Madison.”
Malcolm exhaled.
“Take witnesses.”
Evelyn entered the estate with two uniformed officers responding to Yolanda’s video.
The new security guards did not stop them.
Celeste met them in the foyer.
Elegant.
Composed.
As if nothing had happened.
“Evelyn.”
“Where is Madison?”
“Upstairs.”
One officer spoke.
“We need to speak with Ms. Bell privately regarding the child.”
Celeste’s married name was Whitmore, but legally she still sometimes used Bell.
Her eyes flickered.
“Of course.”
Evelyn went upstairs.
Madison ran into her before she reached the bedroom.
“Grandma.”
Evelyn wrapped both arms around her.
The girl shook.
“I knew you’d come.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I should have come sooner.”
Madison pulled back.
“Celeste says Dad wasn’t my dad.”
“We’re going to deal with that.”
“Is it true?”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“I do not believe it.”
“But you don’t know.”
Madison was too smart for comforting lies.
“No.”
Evelyn chose truth.
“I don’t know what evidence Celeste claims to have.”
Madison’s eyes filled.
“Then maybe.”
Evelyn cupped her face.
“Listen to me. Your father chose you every day of your life. Whatever a test says about biology, that does not erase him.”
Madison nodded, but fear remained.
“Can I come with you?”
“Yes.”
Celeste appeared at the end of the hall.
“No.”
Evelyn turned.
The officers were downstairs.
Yolanda stood behind Madison.
Celeste crossed her arms.
“I am Madison’s legal guardian.”
“Temporary guardian.”
“Court-recognized.”
“Until tomorrow, apparently.”
Celeste’s expression changed.
“You know.”
“I know enough.”
“Then you know taking her could complicate things.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You forced her into filth and threatened her.”
“I disciplined her.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice became quiet.
“You abused a child while explaining your real-estate scheme.”
Celeste’s face tightened.
“You have no idea what’s happening.”
“That seems to be your favorite belief.”
“You think the house belongs to Madison.”
“I think you’re trying very hard to make sure it doesn’t.”
Celeste laughed once.
“Hawthorne never belonged to the Whitmores the way Thomas claimed.”
Evelyn stopped.
There.
Confirmation.
“You know about Charles.”
Celeste looked surprised.
Only briefly.
Then recovered.
“Charles knows the truth.”
“Which truth?”
“Thomas stole this land.”
Madison looked between them.
“Grandpa Thomas?”
Evelyn hated having the conversation in front of her.
Celeste enjoyed it.
“Your wonderful family built this house on property that wasn’t theirs.”
“Stop.”
Evelyn’s tone sharpened.
Celeste continued anyway.
“And your father knew.”
Madison’s face drained.
“Dad?”
Evelyn stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Celeste smiled.
“Ask Malcolm about Andrew’s signature.”
Evelyn stared.
“That signature is forged.”
“Is it?”
“He was in Boston.”
Celeste’s smile disappeared slightly.
Then:
“Maybe that one.”
Evelyn felt cold.
“One?”
Celeste stepped back.
“You’re chasing the wrong document.”
The officers came upstairs.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to continue downstairs.”
Celeste raised her hands.
“Gladly.”
Before leaving, she looked at Evelyn.
“You think tomorrow is about one deed.”
A pause.
“It isn’t.”
Then at Madison:
“And you think Evelyn can protect you because you’re Andrew’s daughter.”
Her smile returned.
“Tomorrow we find out whether you even are.”
The officer escorted Celeste away.
Evelyn took Madison downstairs.
She planned to leave immediately.
Then Yolanda handed her something.
A folder.
“I found it behind the desk in Celeste’s study.”
Evelyn opened it.
DNA laboratory paperwork.
A scheduled comparison.
Sample A:
Madison Rebecca Whitmore.
Sample B:
Andrew Thomas Whitmore.
Status:
Archived medical specimen acquired.
Evelyn felt cold.
Andrew had undergone medical testing in Boston.
Stored blood.
Someone had obtained it.
The laboratory appointment was real.
The test could be completed by morning.
Madison whispered:
“Is that Dad?”
Evelyn closed the folder.
“We’re leaving.”
But one question followed her all the way to the car.
