Chapter 13 - The House Camilla WantedDivorce discovery showed Camilla’s plan went beyond money.

She had prepared a proposed settlement months earlier.
The marital home.
A twenty-two-million-dollar property Grant owned before marriage.
Camilla knew it was separate property.
Still requested temporary exclusive occupancy if protective order entered.
Why?
Leverage.
Living in home while Grant excluded would create negotiating pressure.
She had also prepared press strategy with a private reputation consultant.
Draft headline concepts.
CEO’S TEMPER PROBLEM.
TRUST MONEY QUESTIONS.
STEPMOTHER SEEKS PROTECTION.
Grant stared.
“She was preparing a media war.”
His lawyer nodded.
“Not illegal.”
“No.”
“Some tactics unpleasant.”
“Some based on false claims.”
“Yes.”
The reputation consultant’s notes became relevant because Camilla sent them through discovery voluntarily? Actually attorney may withhold privileged. Better some nonprivileged invoices and strategy docs from consultant not counsel. Keep realistic.
Grant asked:
“What did she want eventually?”
“Settlement proposal suggests cash payment of eight million plus support.”
“Eight?”
“Anchor number.”
“Based on what?”
“Marriage length, lifestyle, alleged career sacrifice.”
They had been married three years.
Prenup existed.
Camilla’s likely entitlement much lower.
Again.
She asked enormous amounts because Grant feared litigation.
Pattern.
Then a section:
Confidential resolution of historic trust issues.
Grant laughed.
She wanted him to buy silence about something he now disclosed.
Worthless leverage.
His lawyer said:
“The best thing you did was tell truth before settlement negotiations.”
Grant hated how simple.
Then house search under financial warrant found a safe-deposit key hidden in Camilla’s dressing room.
Box contained:
Cash $96,000.
Jewelry.
Copies of red-folder documents.
External drive.
And letters Elise had written to Grant during illness.
Grant went cold.
“How did she get those?”
They had been in locked memory trunk.
Camilla took them.
Why?
On drive were scanned copies with highlighted phrases.
Elise writing:
Grant’s father mistakes control for responsibility.
Harper will need protection from family money politics.
Camilla had studied a dead woman’s private thoughts.
One highlight:
If Grant remarries, I hope the woman loves Harper without needing to replace me.
Camilla annotated:
Impossible standard.
Another:
Harper should keep Monroe shares separate from any future spouse.
Annotation:
Elise never intended me to belong.
Grant felt sick.
Elise wrote before knowing Camilla.
Camilla personalized it.
She entered marriage with old resentment and later found letters confirming her fear in her own mind.
Grant’s lawyer asked:
“Could she have genuinely felt excluded?”
“Yes.”
“Does that matter?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Grant thought.
“It explains some bitterness.”
“Doesn’t explain assault.”
“No.”
The drive also contained Camilla’s journal entries.
Not all admissible? Seized relevant. Prosecutors may review warrant scope. Let's keep to excerpts lawfully obtained due fraud investigation.
One entry months after wedding:
Harper asked if I was replacing Mommy. I said no. Grant thanked me. Why did it feel like losing?
Another:
I love this child. I hate what loving her reminds me of.
That devastated Grant.
Camilla’s early affection had been real.
Then:
Found red folder today. Grant isn’t clean. Thomas isn’t clean. Elise married into liars and somehow became saint.
Date eighteen months ago.
Next:
For first time, I don’t feel beneath them.
Grant understood.
His mistake had not merely given Camilla legal leverage.
It repaired her wounded status.
Then:
If Grant ever judges me again, I can show him what he did to Harper.
From there journal hardened.
Bellweather.
Payments described as “taking back what Hawthornes cost me.”
Thomas’s blackmail payment called “first installment.”
Camilla had created private restitution system.
Then six weeks before mall:
Naomi is looking too closely.
Need exit.
Another:
Grant will never choose me over Harper, so stop asking him to.
Then:
Make him choose between protecting himself and protecting her.
Grant stopped reading.
That was what escalator day became.
Harper’s pain was instrument.
If Grant protected Harper publicly, trust secret exposed.
If he stayed quiet, Camilla remained powerful.
Camilla designed false binary.
Grant broke it by accepting consequences.
That was why she was now unraveling.
Not because he outsmarted her.
Because he stopped playing the game where reputation had to survive.
Rachel later told him:
“She may take plea.”
“For assault?”
“Possibly combined with fraud-related case depending charging.”
“What would sentence be?”
“Depends.”
Grant hated uncertainty.
Then remembered how fear of uncertainty created silence.
“Okay.”
Rachel looked surprised.
“That’s it?”
“Yeah.”
He smiled faintly.
“I’m learning not to build my life around outcomes I can’t control.”
At home, Harper asked to sleep in her own room again.
Good.
Grant tucked her in.
She pointed to one restored photograph of Elise.
“Camilla hid that.”
“I know.”
“Are you going to hide Camilla pictures?”
Grant paused.
“What do you want?”
“Not in here.”
“Okay.”
He removed them from Harper’s room.
But he did not destroy.
Stored.
History, not worship.
Then Harper said:
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Was she ever nice for real?”
Grant swallowed.
“I think so.”
Harper began crying.
“That makes it worse.”
Grant sat beside her.
“I know.”
Because children preferred monsters sometimes.
May you like
Monsters made good memories fake.
People made them complicated.
