Chapter 15 - The Hospital RoomMargaret woke to darkness.

Not because the room was dark.
Because a hand covered her eyes.
“Don't scream.”
She knew Charles's voice.
Her body went rigid.
“Security is outside.”
“Was.”
Margaret heard something metallic click.
A gun.
“What do you want?”
“You should have stayed quiet.”
“I was going to confess.”
“I know.”
Charles removed his hand.
Margaret turned.
He wore hospital scrubs beneath a jacket.
His face looked older than it had two days earlier.
Not afraid.
Angry.
“You ruined everything,” he said.
Margaret almost laughed.
“I ruined it?”
“You hit the girl in front of a camera.”
“I didn't know the emergency system recorded remotely.”
“You should have known.”
“You told me to get the drive.”
“I didn't tell you to lose control.”
Margaret stared.
“You poisoned Robert.”
Charles smiled faintly.
“You gave me the medication.”
“I didn't tell you to kill him.”
“You wanted the problem solved.”
“No.”
“You wanted the inheritance preserved.”
Margaret began crying.
Charles leaned closer.
“Don't rewrite yourself now because your son finally sees you clearly.”
That hurt because it was true.
Margaret had spent decades rewriting her actions.
Protecting Daniel.
Protecting the family.
Protecting Robert's legacy.
Protecting the foundation.
Words covering greed.
Fear.
Humiliation.
Control.
Then Charles said,
“Where is Robert's recording?”
“Police have it.”
His expression changed.
She smiled bitterly.
“Too late.”
Charles raised the gun.
The door opened.
Daniel stood there.
Everything froze.
Daniel had arrived with Detective Reyes but moved ahead when he heard voices.
“Put it down.”
Charles laughed softly.
“You really do have terrible timing.”
Daniel's eyes went to Margaret.
She was terrified.
Then back to Charles.
“You're finished.”
“No.”
“Police have the recording.”
“Recording proves nothing.”
“It proves Dad knew.”
“Your father was emotional.”
“Toxicology proves he was poisoned.”
Charles's face tightened.
Daniel knew he'd hit something.
“Emily found the test.”
Charles recovered.
“Your wife loved drama.”
Daniel took one step forward.
“Don't say her name.”
Charles pointed the gun.
“Stop.”
Daniel stopped.
Behind him, Reyes waited out of sight.
Daniel needed Charles focused.
“What happened that night?”
Margaret whispered,
“Daniel, don't.”
He ignored her.
“Dad was going to expose you.”
Charles smiled.
“Your father was going to destroy everyone.”
“So you killed him.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I prevented a disaster.”
Margaret shut her eyes.
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
“Say it.”
Charles leaned forward.
“Robert had a bad heart.”
“And?”
“I helped it fail.”
The confession hung in the room.
Reyes had it.
Daniel knew.
Charles didn't.
“What did you give him?”
“Enough digoxin to guarantee he wouldn't make his meeting.”
Margaret began sobbing.
Charles looked at her.
“Don't pretend you didn't benefit.”
Daniel's voice hardened.
“She will answer for what she did.”
Margaret looked at him.
He continued.
“But you don't get to hide behind her.”
Charles shifted toward Daniel.
That was the opening.
Reyes entered.
“Drop the gun!”
Charles spun.
Margaret grabbed his wrist.
The gun fired.
Glass shattered.
Daniel lunged.
Reyes tackled Charles.
The weapon slid across the floor.
Two officers rushed in.
Within seconds, Whitmore was pinned.
Handcuffed.
Still screaming.
“You think she is innocent?”
He pointed at Margaret.
“She started everything!”
Margaret looked at Daniel.
Daniel said nothing.
Police dragged Charles away.
Silence returned.
Margaret began crying.
Daniel stood several feet from her bed.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
“I didn't come for you.”
The words hurt.
She nodded.
“I know.”
“I came because Sophie deserves the truth.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“She hates me.”
“She is afraid of you.”
“That is worse.”
“Yes.”
Margaret looked toward the shattered window.
“I loved her.”
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“I think you loved having control over her.”
Margaret began crying again.
Daniel continued.
“You told yourself everything was love. What you did to Dad. Michael. Emily. Sophie.”
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You were protecting the version of your life you wanted everyone else to believe.”
Margaret looked at him.
“And now?”
“Now you tell police everything.”
“I will.”
“All of it.”
“Yes.”
“No more protecting yourself.”
Margaret nodded.
Daniel turned toward the door.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“Will you bring Sophie?”
He looked back.
“To see you?”
Margaret nodded.
“No.”
Her face collapsed.
“Not because I'm punishing you.”
“Then why?”
“Because she doesn't owe you access to her.”
Daniel left.
In the hallway, Reyes waited.
“Whitmore's confession was recorded.”
Daniel nodded.
“Good.”
“We also found Eleanor.”
Daniel looked up.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Michael's mother had been locked inside an unused office at the foundation property.
Dehydrated.
Terrified.
But alive.
Daniel exhaled.
For the first time, one part of the nightmare had ended without another opening beneath it.
Then his phone buzzed.
Sophie.
A message.
Dad, can you come home?
Daniel immediately called.
“What happened?”
Her voice was small.
“I found something in Grandma's suitcase.”
Daniel stopped walking.
“What?”
“A letter.”
“From who?”
May you like
Sophie whispered,
“Mom.”
