Chapter 17 - Isabella Finally Told the Whole StoryIt took three months.

Not three days.
Not one dramatic conversation.
Three months before Isabella told Alejandro everything.
They were eating breakfast.
Ordinary Tuesday.
Toast.
Strawberries.
Alejandro had just complained about burning eggs again.
Isabella suddenly said:
“The first time was the pool.”
Alejandro stopped.
“What?”
“You asked what wasn't the first time.”
He remembered the garbage.
“And this wasn't the first time…”
He put down his fork.
“You don't have to tell me now.”
“I want to.”
So he listened.
The pool happened nine months earlier.
Isabella had refused to delete a photograph of Camila from her tablet wallpaper.
Beatriz told her it was disrespectful.
Isabella refused.
Beatriz made her clean every outdoor cushion beside the pool.
There were twenty-six.
When Isabella slowed down, Beatriz poured water over cleaned ones and made her start again.
The second time was the kitchen.
Isabella broke a wineglass while putting dishes away.
Beatriz made her stand facing the wall for two hours.
“No bathroom?”
“I didn't ask.”
“Why?”
“She said asking added time.”
The third was Grandma's phone call.
Storage room.
No dinner.
The fourth was a school drawing.
Isabella drew Camila, Alejandro and herself.
The teacher wrote:
Beautiful family.
Beatriz saw it.
She tore the drawing.
Then told Isabella:
“If you want your old family so badly, maybe you don't belong in this one.”
Alejandro's eyes filled.
He did not interrupt.
The fifth was the birthday box.
Camila's belongings.
Beatriz threw it into a garbage bin.
Isabella climbed into the bin later and recovered the silver bracelet.
She had hidden it ever since.
“Where?”
Isabella went upstairs.
She returned holding her stuffed rabbit.
A seam on the back had been opened and restitched badly.
Inside was Camila's bracelet.
Alejandro began crying.
Not loudly.
He simply couldn't stop.
Isabella looked worried.
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“Sad?”
“Yes.”
“Because Mommy?”
“Because you had to hide this.”
She placed the bracelet in his palm.
“Can I wear it now?”
He fastened it around her wrist.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
Then her face became serious.
“There was one worse thing.”
Alejandro's stomach tightened.
“What?”
“She made me make a video.”
“What video?”
Isabella looked embarrassed.
“She told me to say I hated it here.”
Alejandro went cold.
“What exactly?”
“That I hated you.”
He closed his eyes.
“Why?”
“She said if I didn't, Grandma would get in trouble.”
“Do you know where the video is?”
“Her old phone.”
Police had seized multiple devices.
Marta located it.
The video existed.
Isabella sat in front of a white wall.
Eyes swollen.
Voice flat.
“I hate living with my dad.”
Alejandro watched.
“I don't want him to come home.”
His chest tightened.
“I want to go away to school.”
Then Isabella glanced off camera.
Beatriz's voice:
“Keep going.”
Isabella whispered:
“I forgot.”
“Say he scares you.”
“He doesn't.”
A pause.
Beatriz's voice hardened.
“Isabella.”
The child flinched.
Then looked back at the camera.
“My dad scares me.”
Alejandro stopped the video.
He couldn't continue.
Marta did.
After the coached statement, Beatriz entered frame.
She crouched beside Isabella.
“You see? That wasn't difficult.”
Isabella wiped her face.
“Can I call Grandma now?”
“No.”
“You promised.”
“I changed my mind.”
The recording ended.
The video had been intended for the Swiss school.
Evidence that Isabella herself wanted removal.
Evidence Alejandro was unsafe.
Evidence Beatriz was the concerned stepmother.
All manufactured from a frightened child.
When prosecutors showed Beatriz the video, she finally stopped fighting several charges.
Her attorney began negotiating.
Alejandro did not care about sentence length yet.
He cared about one thing.
Isabella seeing that telling the truth changed something.
He sat with her after police confirmed the video would be evidence.
“What happens now?” she asked.
“They believe you.”
She stared.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Because of the video?”
“Because of you.”
“But the video proves it.”
“It helps.”
Isabella thought about that.
Then asked:
“Would you believe me without it?”
Alejandro felt the question like a knife.
Months earlier, the answer might have been uncertain.
Now he knew exactly what he needed to say.
“Yes.”
She studied him carefully.
Testing.
Then:
“Even if Beatriz said I was lying?”
“Yes.”
“Even if there was no camera?”
“Yes.”
“Even if everyone believed her?”
Alejandro took her hand.
“Yes.”
May you like
Isabella nodded.
And for the first time since the garden, she seemed to believe him without checking his face twice.
