Chapter 15 - Harrison Finally Lost ControlHarrison stopped denying.

Not immediately.
First came lawyers.
Statements.
Technical explanations.
Trust language.
Claims that family safety required discretion.
Then prosecutors showed him Claire’s note.
I NEVER AGREED TO THIS.
His defense changed.
He requested a private proffer.
Everett did not attend.
He read the transcript afterward.
Harrison said:
“Claire wanted Sawyer returned when the original threat period passed.”
Moreno:
“When?”
“Within the first year.”
“Why wasn’t he?”
“I delayed.”
“Why?”
“I believed the threat remained.”
“You later learned August wrote the threats.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six years later.”
“Why not correct it then?”
Harrison looked down.
“By then, Sawyer was six.”
“Claire wanted a gradual reunification.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I opposed it.”
“Why?”
“Because it would expose the trust fraud.”
There.
Finally.
“And remove your voting control retroactively.”
“Yes.”
“How much did that matter?”
Harrison’s silence lasted eight seconds.
“A great deal.”
“More than your daughter?”
“No.”
“Your actions suggest otherwise.”
“I loved Claire.”
Moreno remained cold.
“You lied to her about her son.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to Everett.”
“Yes.”
“You concealed Sawyer from his twin.”
“Yes.”
“You falsified beneficiary information.”
“Yes.”
“You paid August Pierce after discovering his crimes.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because by then exposing him exposed me.”
The same trap August described.
Moreno asked:
“Did you ever intend to tell Everett?”
Harrison began crying.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After Claire died.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Finley had just lost his mother.”
“That was three years ago.”
“I kept waiting.”
“Until?”
“I don’t know.”
Moreno leaned forward.
“You were waiting until telling the truth cost you less.”
Harrison looked away.
That was the answer.
Everett stopped reading.
He did not need more.
Charges followed.
Fraud.
Obstruction.
Conspiracy related to falsified records.
Financial crimes connected to the family trust.
Potential child-custody and adoption-related offenses were legally complicated because Claire had signed consent documents, even under questionable circumstances.
August faced more severe charges across multiple cases.
Octavia faced charges connected to Finley and the records.
Harrison resigned every Vale Medical position.
The board suspended family control pending court review.
Stock fell.
News exploded.
VALE MEDICAL HEIR SECRETLY ADOPTED IN BIRTH SCANDAL
FORMER CHAIRMAN ACCUSED OF HIDING GRANDSON
UNLICENSED ADOPTION NETWORK LINKED TO PROMINENT HOSPITAL
Everett hated seeing his sons described as heirs.
Finley asked:
“Why are reporters outside?”
“Because adults made a mess.”
“Are they talking about Sawyer?”
“Yes.”
“Does he like it?”
“No.”
Neither boy attended school for several days.
Their parents arranged a second meeting at the Frost house.
Everett walked inside for the first time.
Sawyer’s life covered the walls.
School pictures.
Soccer medals.
A badly painted clay bowl.
Family vacations.
Everett felt grief.
Not because Sawyer had been happy.
Because Everett had missed every picture.
Miriam saw him staring.
“I can make copies.”
Everett turned.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
She smiled sadly.
“I want to.”
Daniel remained guarded.
But softer.
The boys disappeared upstairs to play games.
Ten minutes later, shouting.
Everett stood automatically.
Daniel raised one hand.
“They’re brothers.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means maybe let them argue for thirty seconds.”
They listened.
Finley:
“That’s cheating!”
Sawyer:
“It’s literally allowed!”
Finley:
“No!”
Daniel smiled.
Everett sat again.
Claire had been right.
They were boys.
Not symbols.
Miriam brought a photo album.
“This is his first year.”
Everett almost refused.
Then opened it.
Sawyer as a newborn.
Sawyer sleeping on Daniel’s chest.
First bath.
First Christmas.
First steps.
Everett cried openly.
Daniel sat across from him.
“I’m sorry.”
Everett looked up.
“For what?”
“That you missed it.”
The generosity nearly broke him.
“You didn’t steal it.”
“I know.”
“But you benefited from someone else stealing it.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Everett immediately added:
“So did Sawyer. So did Miriam. That doesn’t make your love wrong.”
Daniel nodded.
After a while, Everett asked:
“Are you afraid I’ll sue?”
“Yes.”
“I won’t.”
“You can’t promise what future lawyers recommend.”
“I can promise what I instruct them.”
Daniel studied him.
Everett continued:
“I want legal recognition of biological truth. I want the fraudulent records corrected. I do not want to erase your adoption.”
Miriam began crying.
Everett looked toward the stairs.
“I want another relationship added, not one removed.”
Daniel extended his hand.
Everett looked at it.
Then shook.
Not friendship.
Not yet.
An agreement.
Upstairs, something crashed.
Finley yelled:
“SAWYER!”
Sawyer shouted:
“IT WAS PICKLES!”
The dog barked.
Daniel sighed.
“Family moment.”
Everett laughed.
Then his phone buzzed.
Moreno.
August had revealed where the other New Harbor children were.
Three families.
Three living young people.
May you like
Three sets of parents about to learn truths almost as devastating as Everett’s.
And Claire’s boxes were about to expose a scandal far larger than Vale Medical could contain.
