CHAPTER 3 The Letter Emily Never Wanted Charles to Read

The flashing red light on the security camera stopped as suddenly as it had begun.

The message disappeared from the monitor.

REMOTE VIEWER DISCONNECTED.

No one in the kitchen spoke.

Thomas was the first to move.

He unplugged the security monitor from the wall.

"It wasn't hacked."

Vanessa looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because only one person besides me has access to the system."

Charles quietly answered.

"I gave him the password."

Thomas frowned.

"Then who was watching?"

Charles slowly looked toward the sealed envelope lying on the marble countertop.

"I think..."

"...the person who wanted that letter."

Vanessa instinctively stepped back.

"The letter?"

Charles nodded.

"For three years, nothing happened."

"But tonight..."

"Someone knew it was about to be opened."

Thomas carefully picked up the envelope.

The old wax seal remained untouched.

On the front, Emily's handwriting appeared elegant and steady.

For the one who finally discovers the truth.

He broke the seal.

Inside...

There wasn't just one letter.

There were two.

The first was addressed to Charles.

The second...

Had no name at all.

Thomas unfolded the first page.

Emily's handwriting was unmistakable.

"Dad...

If you're reading this, then I was right.

Someone has already begun looking for this letter.

Please don't trust what happened to me.

I wasn't afraid of dying.

I was afraid someone would make my death look like my own choice."

Vanessa slowly covered her mouth.

Charles closed his eyes.

He had spent three years believing his daughter had taken her own life after a long struggle with anxiety.

Thomas continued reading.

"I left everything you need inside the blue file.

Do not let anyone destroy it.

Especially if they tell you it no longer matters."

Thomas frowned.

"The blue file?"

Charles looked confused.

"I've never seen any blue file."

Neither had Vanessa.

The second letter was shorter.

Only one sentence.

Written in larger handwriting.

The medicine bottle is only the beginning.

Silence.

Thomas looked up.

"What does that mean?"

No one answered.

Charles suddenly stood.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Without saying a word, he walked toward the pantry at the far end of the kitchen.

He opened the highest cabinet.

Reached behind several old recipe books.

Then pulled out...

A dusty blue document folder.

Thomas stared in disbelief.

"You knew where it was?"

Charles nodded slowly.

"I hid it."

"But..."

"I never opened it."

Vanessa looked confused.

"Why?"

Charles's voice trembled.

"Because Emily begged me..."

"...to wait until someone tried to find it."

The kitchen fell silent again.

Thomas slowly opened the blue folder.

It wasn't full of legal papers.

It was full of photographs.

Dozens of them.

All secretly taken inside the Reed mansion.

Family dinners.

Business meetings.

Private conversations.

Then...

The final photograph.

Thomas's breathing stopped.

It showed Emily...

Arguing violently with someone in the kitchen.

The person's face wasn't visible.

Only one hand...

Holding the exact same medicine bottle now sitting on the marble counter.

Vanessa whispered,

"Who took these?"

Before anyone could answer...

The security monitor suddenly turned back on by itself.

The screen remained black.

Then a single line of white text appeared.

THE FILE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE FOUND.

The lights in the kitchen flickered.

And somewhere upstairs...

A door slowly closed.

The Truth Was Hidden in a Family Secret

Thomas and Vanessa rushed upstairs.

Every room was empty.

No broken windows.

No sign of anyone inside the mansion.

Only silence.

When they returned to the kitchen, Charles was still sitting at the island.

The blue folder lay open before him.

For the first time in years...

He began looking through every photograph.

One by one.

Then he suddenly stopped.

"This one..."

Thomas leaned closer.

It was another picture from three years earlier.

Emily sat in the library with an elderly woman.

The Reed family's longtime private nurse.

Martha Collins.

Vanessa frowned.

"I remember her."

"She retired after Emily died."

Charles slowly nodded.

"No."

"She disappeared."

Thomas immediately searched the old personnel records on his laptop.

Nothing.

Every employment record connected to Martha had been deleted.

Almost as if she had never worked there.

But inside the blue folder...

Emily had kept copies of everything.

Medical schedules.

Prescription logs.

Handwritten notes.

One page immediately caught Thomas's attention.

Emily had written across the top:

Someone keeps changing Grandpa's medication.

Thomas looked at Charles.

"Grandpa..."

"Did you ever feel your prescriptions weren't right?"

Charles thought for a moment.

"Twice."

"The pharmacist said the bottles had been mislabeled."

Vanessa slowly looked at the old medicine bottle on the counter.

The same bottle she had taken from the cabinet tonight.

She finally understood.

"I wasn't crushing poison."

Thomas turned toward her.

"What?"

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"I recognized the bottle."

"I thought these were Grandpa's old sleeping tablets."

"I was trying to crush one because Grandpa has difficulty swallowing pills."

Charles looked surprised.

"I asked the housekeeper to leave them whole."

Vanessa nodded.

"I never knew."

Thomas remained silent.

Everything finally fit together.

Emily hadn't hidden evidence of a murder.

She had uncovered years of medication errors inside the mansion.

Before she could expose them...

She died.

Charles looked at the blue folder.

"I thought she was imagining things."

His voice cracked.

"I was wrong."

Thomas closed the folder.

"We're reopening Emily's case."

Charles nodded slowly.

"No."

"Not because I believe she was murdered."

"But because she deserved to be heard."

The kitchen became quiet.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Then Charles picked up the old medicine bottle.

Looked at his granddaughter-in-law.

And smiled gently.

"Next time..."

"...just ask me to swallow the pill."

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

For the first time that night...

The fear was gone.

The misunderstanding had nearly destroyed the family.

But Emily's final message had done something far more important.

It forced them to stop hiding the truth from one another.

Outside...

Morning sunlight slowly entered the kitchen.

The red recording light on the security camera blinked quietly.

Still watching.

But this time...

There were no more secrets left to record.
