Chapter 3 - The House Rachel Already OwnedCaleb met Daniel Cross the next morning.

Not at Daniel’s office.

At the police station.

Detective Laura Kim insisted.

Daniel looked offended by the setting.

Caleb did not care.

Laura placed Rachel’s letter on the table.

“Mr. Cross, you were referenced by name.”

Daniel looked at it.

His shoulders sank.

“I wondered if this would surface.”

Caleb stared.

“You knew about the letter?”

“No.”

“But you knew she was afraid.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Yes.”

Caleb wanted to hit him.

He kept both hands flat on the table.

“Start talking.”

Daniel began with Hawthorne House.

The mansion sat on eighteen acres outside Boston.

Caleb’s family had purchased the main residence twelve years earlier.

That much Caleb knew.

What he did not know was that seven of those acres—the most valuable portion, including the private access road and gardens—had already belonged to Rachel.

Her grandfather had acquired the land decades earlier through a family trust.

“When we bought the house,” Daniel explained, “Rachel contributed the acreage.”

“So she owned part of the estate.”

“Yes.”

“Why was that hidden from me?”

“Not hidden.”

Caleb stared.

“I didn’t know.”

“Rachel did not want ownership inside the marriage to become emotional leverage.”

“That doesn’t sound like Rachel.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She had reasons.”

“What reasons?”

Daniel hesitated.

Laura leaned forward.

“Mr. Cross.”

Daniel sighed.

“Caleb’s father.”

Caleb went still.

“My father?”

Thomas Harrington had died three years before Rachel.

A domineering businessman who believed family wealth should remain under male control.

Caleb had spent half his adult life fighting with him.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas tried to pressure Rachel into transferring the land into Harrington Family Holdings.”

Caleb remembered vague arguments.

He had assumed they were about wedding planning.

“Did I know?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Rachel thought telling you would force you to choose between her and your father.”

Caleb almost laughed.

“He made that choice for me.”

“She knew.”

“So she kept the land separate.”

“Yes.”

“And after she died?”

Daniel looked down.

“The ownership should have passed into the Elise Trust.”

Caleb’s heartbeat changed.

“Should have?”

Daniel did not answer.

Laura asked, “Where did it go?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“A transfer was recorded eight months before Rachel died.”

“To whom?”

“Harrington Residential Holdings.”

Caleb knew that company.

He controlled it.

“Rachel transferred the property to me?”

“Technically, to an entity controlled by you.”

“I never knew.”

“I know.”

“Did she sign?”

Daniel hesitated.

“That is the problem.”

Caleb leaned forward.

“Did she sign?”

“The notarized document says she did.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Daniel looked at Rachel’s letter.

“She later told me she could not remember signing it.”

Caleb sat back.

The room seemed to tilt.

Laura asked, “Who witnessed the signature?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Evelyn Pemberton.”

Caleb’s eyes closed.

There it was again.

Mrs. Pemberton.

Every path returned to her.

Daniel continued.

“At the time, Rachel was undergoing aggressive treatment. She sometimes signed documents at home.”

“Did you prepare the transfer?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“An outside attorney.”

“Name?”

“Victor Hale.”

Caleb frowned.

He knew that name.

Victor had worked briefly with his father.

Then disappeared from the family’s orbit after Thomas died.

Laura wrote it down.

“What happened after Rachel questioned the signature?”

“I told her we needed to investigate.”

“Did you?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Not quickly enough.”

Caleb stood.

“You did nothing.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“My wife wrote a letter five days before she died because she believed someone was stealing from our daughter.”

“I was gathering documents.”

“For five years?”

Daniel flinched.

Caleb continued.

“You knew the land might belong to Elise.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me live there believing I owned everything.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I thought correcting the title after Rachel’s death would destabilize the estate.”

Caleb stared.

“What does that even mean?”

“Your father’s companies were already heavily leveraged. Hawthorne House secured a credit line.”

“You protected the company.”

“I protected the family.”

“No.”

Caleb heard Rachel’s words in his mind.

Protect Elise before you protect the name.

“You protected the name.”

Daniel said nothing.

That silence was confession enough.

Laura asked about the Elise Trust.

Daniel admitted he had not served as trustee, but he had handled some legal work around it.

“Were funds missing?”

“I heard concerns.”

“From whom?”

“Rachel.”

“And?”

“Evelyn.”

Caleb stared.

“Evelyn told you money was missing?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That Rachel had made unauthorized withdrawals while confused from treatment.”

Caleb laughed in disbelief.

“So the woman Rachel suspected accused Rachel.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

That was how it had worked.

Create confusion.

Then blame the sick woman for noticing it.

Laura closed her notebook.

“We’ll need every file you have.”

Daniel nodded.

Caleb stood to leave.

Daniel stopped him.

“There’s something else.”

Caleb turned.

Daniel looked genuinely afraid now.

“Victor Hale wasn’t working alone.”

“Who was he working for?”

Daniel’s eyes dropped.

“Your father.”

Caleb felt anger rush through him.

Thomas.

Even dead, his father had reached into this house.

“Why?”

“Thomas believed Rachel’s separate property should ultimately belong to the Harrington family.”

“And Evelyn?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Caleb stepped closer.

“Try harder.”

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Evelyn worked for your father before she ever worked for you.”

Caleb froze.

That had never been mentioned.

Mrs. Pemberton had told them she came from a private household in Connecticut.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas placed her at Hawthorne House.”

“Placed?”

“Yes.”

“As what?”

Daniel looked toward the detective.

Then at Caleb.

“As someone he trusted to make sure Rachel never separated the property from the Harrington estate.”

Caleb stared at him.

Mrs. Pemberton had not simply become part of the household.

She had been sent there.

Years before Elise was born.

May you like

Years before Rachel became sick.

And now Caleb had to confront the possibility that the woman he trusted most inside his home had never truly worked for him at all.
